Book Innovations in Ground Water and Soil Cleanup

Download or read book Innovations in Ground Water and Soil Cleanup written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-11-21 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on ground water and soil cleanup address only the technologies themselvesâ€"not why new technologies are or are not developed. Innovations in Ground Water and Soil Cleanup takes a holistic approach to the entire field, addressing both the sluggish commercial development of ground water and soil cleanup technologies and the attributes of specific technologies. It warns that, despite cleanup expenditures of nearly $10 billion a year, the technologies remain rudimentary. This engaging book focuses on the failure of regulatory policy to link cleanup with the financial interests of the company responsible for the contamination. The committee explores why the market for remediation technology is uniquely lacking in economic drivers and why demand for innovation has been so much weaker than predicted. The volume explores how to evaluate the performance of cleanup technologies from the points of view of the public, regulators, cleanup entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders. The committee discusses approaches to standardizing performance testing, so that choosing a technology for a given site can be more timely and less contentious. Following up on Alternatives for Ground Water Cleanup (NRC, 1994), this sequel presents the state of the art in the cleanup of various types of ground water and soil contaminants. Strategies for making valid cost comparisons also are reviewed.

Book Waste Trading among Rich Nations

Download or read book Waste Trading among Rich Nations written by Kate O'Neill and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000-06-19 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most people think of hazardous waste trading, they think of egregious dumping by U.S. and European firms on poor countries in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. But over 80 percent of the waste trade takes place between industrialized nations and is legal by domestic and international standards. In Waste Trading among Rich Nations, Kate O'Neill asks why some industrialized nations voluntarily import such wastes in the absence of pressing economic need. She focuses on Britain as an importer and Germany as an exporter and also looks at France, Australia, and Japan. According to O'Neill, most important in determining whether an industrialized democracy imports waste are two aspects of its regulatory system. The first is the structure of the regulatory process—how powers and responsibilities are allocated among different agencies and levels of government—and the structure of the hazardous waste disposal industry. The second is what O'Neill calls the "style" of environmental regulation, in particular access to the policy process and mode of implementation. Hazardous waste management is in crisis in most industrialized countries and is becoming increasingly controversial in international negotiations. O'Neill not only examines waste trading empirically but also develops a theoretical model of comparative regulation that can be used to establish links between domestic and international environmental politics.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Green Movement

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Green Movement written by Miranda Schreurs and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007-08-14 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings have been concerned about nature and their place in it for millennia. Disquiet about the consequences of human action on the natural environment date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The efforts of the green movement can be traced back to the nineteenth century. In this period, individuals, groups, and organizations began campaigning for the conservation and preservation of natural areas and the protection of wildlife species. Efforts to combat pollution also began. It was not until the 1960s, however, that the green movement in its more modern incarnation emerged. The green movements that arose at this time maintained the concerns with conservation, preservation, and industrial pollution held by earlier generations, but added to their agenda new issues, including justice, equality, participatory democracy, and sustainability. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Green Movement provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of green parties and movements, green issues, and green concepts. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on countries in the world where green parties or proto-parties have formed, green movement organizations, major international environmental conferences, and green concepts. This useful reference will be greatly valued by students, academics, journalists, and policymakers alike.

Book Is There Or If Not Could There be a European SUPERFUND of Some Kind Or Other

This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Law - Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law, grade: merit (72%), University of the West of England, Bristol, 37 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Superfund is the American Federal government's program to clean up the uncontrolled hazardous waste sites in the USA. Over the past 25 years the Superfund program has located and analyzed tens of thousands of hazardous waste sites and protected human health and the environment from contamination.1 In its best years between 1997 to 2000 Superfund successfully completed on average 86 cleanup activities on previously contaminated sites.2 From 1992 to 1996 there were on average completed cleanups of 68 sites per year, whereas from 2001 to 2004 there were completed clean ups of on average only 42 sites per year. 3 In 2005 not more than 8 completions of cleanups were carried out. 4 This dissertation deals with the question whether there is a similar model in Europe that treats contaminated sites and if there is not such a model at the European level the next question is whether such a model could be a good solution to clean up of hazardous waste sites in Europe in the future. The following discussion will deal with the US model of Superfund in the first chapter. The Superfund model will be described. Moreover its advantages and flaws will be dealt with. In the second chapter, there will be an introduction to the system of environmental liability in Europe and the European fund systems which are relevant for soil contamination. The third chapter will provide a comparative analysis of the cleanup and fund systems in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. Finally the fifth chapter will analyse the question whether there could be a Superfund model at the European level. This chapter is divided into four parts. The first question is whether there is a Superfund model in Europe already now. In this context there will be looked at norms
