Book Water Purification Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Purification Classic Reprint written by Joseph W. Ellms and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Book The Value of Pure Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Value of Pure Water Classic Reprint written by George C. Whipple and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value of Pure Water "The Value of Pure Water" appeared originally in a collection of scientific papers entitled "Biological Studies by the Pupils of William Thompson Sedgwick." It has attracted an unexpected, and perhaps undeserved, amount of attention, which goes to show the popular interest in the subject. The constant demand upon the author for copies has led to its publication in the present revised form. The author wishes to disclaim any great degree of accuracy or permanency for the formulae suggested and to warn the reader against a too definite application of them in particular cases. The whole study is intended merely to illustrate a fact which in the past has been too little appreciated, namely, that an impure water-supply affects not only the health and comfort of a community, but also the individual pocketbooks of the people. This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pure Water Supply and Its Preservation Is the subject of earnest consideration in our thickly settled towns and cities. Of the three great essentials of life - air, water, and food -the second named may be regarded not only as the chief constituent part of man, but also as peculiarly under his care and control. Seventy-five per cent, of his whole body is made up of the elements of water; ninety five per cent, of the healthy blood which flows in his veins is water; and more than eighty per cent, of the foods which give him life and strength is water. In its agencies, too, water is marvellous. In its purity it is a priceless blessing, and in its abundance the ready servant of the useful and mechanical arts; while, on the other hand, its loss admits no substitution, and in its pollution it becomes the wide-spreading source of pestilence and death. Book Drinking Water and Ice Supplies

Download or read book Drinking Water and Ice Supplies written by T. Mitchell Prudden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drinking-Water and Ice Supplies: And Their Relations to Health and Disease Purpose of informing the householder how wholesome water may be obtained both in town and country. This end is sought not by laying down a series of axioms and rules, but rather by calling the reader's attention to some more or less interesting facts about water and water supplies, in the hope of helping him on these to base an independent judgment applicable to his own particular case. Some of the new bacterial lore is brought into prominence, be cause a good deal of the current distrust of good water sources arises from false notions as to the relationships of the water-bacteria to disease. On the other hand, it is believed that much serious illness may be spared by a knowledge of such facts as are here laid down about the real dangers which lurk in water made impure by inattention to simple sanitary laws. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water-Analysis: A Practical Treatise on the Examination of Potable Water The first edition of this book was published in the spring of the year 1868. The second edition was a reprint with some additional matter contributed by Chapman. The third' edition, brought out soon after the death of Chapman, was in many respects a new book. It appeared in the spring of 1874, and has been reproduced in successive editions ever since. With the tenth edition, which is now called for, the time has arrived for revising and recasting the book so as to embody the results of a very ripe experience. In 1868, as Chapman and myself wrote in our preface, this was the first book which had been published on Water Analyst's; and our task was rendered possible by the then recent discovery of that wonderful reaction whereby albumen and albuminoid substances were made to evolve ammonia in a powerfully oxidising solution. The ammonia so generated we named Albuminoid Ammonia, and the quantity of that ammonia is the measure of the potential albumen in drinking-water. On this basis we have built up water-analysis for general sanitary purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Purification of Drinking Water by the Use of Ozone Classic Reprint

Download or read book Purification of Drinking Water by the Use of Ozone Classic Reprint written by George Albert Soper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Purification of Drinking Water by the Use of Ozone It has been claimed by Mr. Tindal that the purification of water by ozone is a natural process. Wherever water lies ex posed to the influence of the air and sunlight there is a purifying effect which he considers must, in part at least, be attributed to the agency of ozone. The idea of improving the quality of drinking water by this supposed constituent of the atmosphere is therefore not novel. The novelty of the Tindal process lies in the arrangement of artificial conditions whereby the beneficial effects ascribed to ozone may be produced in a thorough and reliable manner. Book Papers Relating to the Introduction of Pure Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book Papers Relating to the Introduction of Pure Water Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers Relating to the Introduction of Pure Water Sometime about the' year 1825, as you may be aware, Mr. Treadwell was appointed by the city au thorities to investigate the subject and report on the best mode of supply. Spot Pond was presented to his notice, and with the assistance of Mr. Moody, he made estimates on this source. This project seems to have been abandoned through the apathy of the councils, or for some other reasons. During Mr. Lyman's administration, Mr. L. Baldwin was engag ed to survey and report on the best mode of supply, according to his judgment. Of the result and nature of his report you are aware. The generality of persons, seem either to have lost sight, or to have entirely overlooked the expense of raising water by steam power. I presume they have assumed for their standard of comparison, the old works at Fair Mount, Philadelphia, where engines and'boilers ill adapted to the purpose were used, con suming immense quantities of fuel. As well might we base our calculations of the effective power of a locomotive engine and rail road, at the present day, on the performances of the same machine twenty years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potable Water: How to Form a Judgment on the Suitableness of Water for Drinking Purposes; Addressed to Medical Officers of Health, and Sanitary Authorities, Etc Now that the public-health Act has conferred powers on Sanitary Authorities to institute proceedings with'a view to closing impure wells and other sources of supply, and has left the decision to the local magistrates, it becomes more than ever desirable that some standard should be set up as a guide in such matters. The bench of magistrates listening to the conflicting statements of experts is like a rudderless ship at sea, without any exact knowledge to guide their decisions, or data upon which to form an opinion. It is hoped and believed that a consideration of the question conceived in an unbiassed Spirit may tend to reduce order out of chaos, and that here as in most other things common-sense will come largely to our aid.
