Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Similar to other data mining and machine learning tasks, multi-label learning suffers from dimensionality. An effective way to mitigate this problem is through dimensionality reduction, which extracts a small number of features by removing irrelevant, redundant, and noisy information. The data mining and machine learning literature currently lacks

Book Classification Clustering and Dimensionality Reduction

Download or read book Classification Clustering and Dimensionality Reduction written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of pattern recognition is supervised or unsupervised classification. Among the various frameworks in which pattern recognition has been traditionally formulated, the statistical approach has been most intensively studied and used in practice. The design of a recognition system requires careful attention to the following issues: feature extraction and selection, cluster analysis, and classifier design and learning. In spite of almost fifty years of research and development in this field, the general problem of recognizing complex patterns with arbitrary orientation, location, and scale remains unsolved. New and emerging applications, such as data mining, web searching, retrieval of multimedia data, face recognition and cursive handwriting recognition, require robust and efficient pattern recognition techniques. The objective of this research proposal is to investigate the following important problems in pattern recognition: (1) classifier evaluation, (2) one-class classification, (3) combination of clustering algorithms, and (4) dimensionality reduction. Solution to these problems will advance the state-of-the-art in pattern recognition, data mining and machine learning. These advances will also be useful to a number of pattern recognition and data mining applications of interest to the Navy.

Book Fundamentals of Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning

Download or read book Fundamentals of Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning written by Ulisses Braga-Neto and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning is designed for a one or two-semester introductory course in Pattern Recognition or Machine Learning at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. The book combines theory and practice and is suitable to the classroom and self-study. It has grown out of lecture notes and assignments that the author has developed while teaching classes on this topic for the past 13 years at Texas A&M University. The book is intended to be concise but thorough. It does not attempt an encyclopedic approach, but covers in significant detail the tools commonly used in pattern recognition and machine learning, including classification, dimensionality reduction, regression, and clustering, as well as recent popular topics such as Gaussian process regression and convolutional neural networks. In addition, the selection of topics has a few features that are unique among comparable texts: it contains an extensive chapter on classifier error estimation, as well as sections on Bayesian classification, Bayesian error estimation, separate sampling, and rank-based classification. The book is mathematically rigorous and covers the classical theorems in the area. Nevertheless, an effort is made in the book to strike a balance between theory and practice. In particular, examples with datasets from applications in bioinformatics and materials informatics are used throughout to illustrate the theory. These datasets are available from the book website to be used in end-of-chapter coding assignments based on python and scikit-learn. All plots in the text were generated using python scripts, which are also available on the book website.

Book Effective Dimensionality Reduction in Pattern Recognition

Download or read book Effective Dimensionality Reduction in Pattern Recognition written by Shobha Patil and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in data collection and storage capabilities have led to an information overload in most sciences. Such datasets present new challenges in data analysis. Traditional statistical methods break down partly because of the increase in the number of observations, but mostly because of the increase in the number of variables associated with each observation. The dimension of the data is the number of variables that are measured on each observation. One of the problems with high-dimensional datasets is that, in many cases, not all the measured variables are "important" for understanding the underlying phenomena of interest. It is still of interest in many applications to reduce the dimension of the original data prior to any modeling of the data.PCA is a way of identifying patterns in data, and re-expressing the data in such a way as to highlight their similarities and differences. Since patterns in data can be hard to find in data of high dimension, PCA is a powerful tool for analyzing data. The other main advantage of PCA is that once you have found these patterns in the data, you can compress the data by reducing the number of dimensions, without much loss of information.

Emphasis is on principles rather than mathematical detail, and coverage ranges from the practical problems of graphically representing high-dimensional data to the theoretical problems relating to matrices of random variables. Each chapter serves as a self-contained survey of a specific topic. The book includes many numerical examples and over 1,100 references.
