Download or read book Classical Studies for Tenor Banjo written by Rob MacKillop and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seasoned music educator and multi-instrumentalist, Rob MacKillop presents this introductory classical repertoire for the intermediate tenor banjoist. Derived from method books for the mandolin, cello and guitar, these progressive melodic studies are typeset in standard notation and tablature. Readers are encouraged to start at the beginning and listen to the author’s online recordings for guidance. Various keys, rhythms and time signatures are represented for a thorough grounding in note reading. Most importantly, these studies have been chosen to develop musicianship, not just technique. Creating your own left-hand fingering and original interpretive ideas will build the confidence needed to become an authoritative classical performer. If you have played the tenor banjo by ear or relied on tablature exclusively in the past, this is the book and now is the time to access the world of standard notation—for whatever style of music that interests you. The author provides liberal playing tips and suggestions for further sight reading. As the perfect fifth tunings of the tenor banjo and mandola are the same (CGDA), this music can also be played on the mandola. Includes access to online audio.

Download or read book Getting Into Jazz Mandolin written by Ted Eschliman and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No longer confined to basic folk genres, any mandolinist aspiring to a broader comprehension of music, including swing, blues, pop, choro, broadway, and even classical can expand his/her playing and through a working knowledge of jazz fundamentals. This breakthrough approach in mandolin pedagogy takes four uncomplicated fretboard patterns (FFcP) and drills a physical familiarity into the player's fingers, softening the fear of upper frets and prepares for the harmonic alterations necessary for effective and intuitive playing of more complex contemporary music.A brief introduction into modes, the player is eased into jamming with audio accompaniment (CD), and eventually an initiation into the most fundamental jazz chord progression of all, the 'ii V7 I' pattern. from the horizontal (melody) to the vertical (chords) and back, the results are a both instinctive and physical grasp of tonal centers and the improvisational fodder of effective performing. an emphasis on pinky strength, finger control and sustain, the book's exercises also develop the player's concepts of tone and melody. Further supportive resources including MP3 audio tracks are also available on the internet. http://www.jazzmando.com/webtracks.shtml

Download or read book Dixieland Jazz Banjo written by Hal Leonard Corp. and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Banjo). Tenor and plectrum banjos are key ingredients of Dixieland jazz music. The bright percussive chord strums and flashy tremolo picking glissandos help define the genre. In the 1920s, when Dixieland jazz was at its zenith, the four-string banjo was the fretted instrument of choice because it could easily be heard above the simultaneous improv of the band's clarinet, cornet, saxophone, and trombone frontline. (Electric guitars were not invented until a decade later.) The chord voicings in these expertly crafted arrangements were selected so that the melody notes were always within reach to enable the user to play chord/melody style if desired. The lead sheets consist of lyrics and two sets of chord diagrams tenor and plectrum positioned throughout the arrangements. This collection of 45 songs includes: Ain't Misbehavin' * Alexander's Ragtime Band * Basin Street Blues * Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home * Honeysuckle Rose * I Got Rhythm * Lazy River * St. Louis Blues * Sweet Georgia Brown * 'Way down Yonder in New Orleans * and more.
Download or read book Renaissance Solos for Mandolin written by John Holenko and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the music in this book comes from editions or manuscripts from England in the late 1500's. There are also a few French pieces. the cittern was popular in Italy, England and France. Aside from various tunings, there were two main kinds of instruments being played during the 16th and 17th centuries: the 4 course (four sets of doubled strings), and the 6 course cittern with several editions of music to go along with both. the pieces I have chosen for this book were all written for the 4 course instrument and fall into three main categories: dance music, song arrangements and free pieces. the free pieces are basically preludes that explore the melodic range of the instrument. As the title suggests these pieces can be played very freely and need not have a very strict tempo. the dance pieces are not really meant to be danced to, but rather take their form and rhythm from the popular court dances of the time. These can be played with a wide range of overall tempo, but once a tempo is chosen, should be strictly adhered to. the song arrangements are settings of popular songs of the time as well as more formal vocal settings. Care should be taken in making the melody clear and singing. Since the range of the cittern and mandolin are the same, John Holenko has kept the melodies intact. Because of the difference in tuning however, the voicing of the harmonies have been changed so as to fit on the mandolin.
