This island was said to be at a ten days' journey from Mexico, and was supposed to lie near Asia and the East Indies. Among those who believed such fairy tales about this wonderful island of California was Cortes, a Spanish soldier and traveller. He had conquered Mexico in 1521 and had made Montezuma, the Mexican emperor, give him a fortune in gold and precious stones. Then Cortes wished to find another rich country to capture, and California, he thought, would be the very place. He wrote home to Spain promising to bring back gold from the island, and also silks, spices, and diamonds from Asia. For he was sure that the two countries were near together, and that both might be found in the Pacific Ocean, or South Sea, as he called it, by sailing northwest.

Book Lessons in California History

Download or read book Lessons in California History written by Harr Wagner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in California History The writers of this history have aimed to give each chapter a beginning, a middle and an end. Each topic is complete in itself. An attempt has been made to put some life in the pages by going into details that have a human interest which the formal historical writer would consider more or less trivial. Special emphasis has been placed on the early discoveries by sea and land and the idea has been to correlate the facts of geography and history so this book will furnish material in harmony with such books as "California" and "The Home and Its Relation to the World" by Dr. H. W. Fairbanks. Tourists and students have a special interest in the Spanish historical relationships. Architecture, especially the modern school buildings and private homes, the olive, the orange and the vine and other fruits and even our hospitality, are a part of California's Spanish heritage. The discovery of gold, the American settlements, the building of the great state of California during the past seventy years, are treated by the presentation of types of pioneers and stories of struggles and difficulties of the early settlers. Special emphasis has been placed upon the story of education, the story of literature, the story of the state government and California's contribution to the common wealth, on account of their influence upon the social conditions of our state. Book Good Time Girls of California

Download or read book Good Time Girls of California written by Jan MacKell Collins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While settlers were drawn out West by the often empty promises of the Gold Rush, prostitution grew and flourished within the mining camps, small towns, and cities of nineteenth-century California. Whether escaping a bad home life, lured by false advertising, or seeking to subsidize their income, thousands of women chose or were forced to enter an industry where they faced segregation and persecution, fines and jailing, and battled the other hazards of their profession. Some dreamed of escape through marriage or retirement, and some became infamous and even successful, but more often found relief only in death. An integral part of western history, the stories of these women continue to fascinate readers and captivate the minds of historians today. Working girls and madams like Bodie's famous Rosa May and the gambler Madame Moustache remain notorious celebrities in the annals of history, and Collins also includes the stories of lesser-known women whose roles in this illicit trade help shape our understanding of the American West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California the Golden IN the preparation of this book the author has not sought to write a complete history of the great Commonwealth of California, but has endeavored to set forth, in simple narrative, the salient features in the fascinating story of the upbuilding of the Golden State. Himself a native son of California, born Of pioneer parents, he has long cherished the hope Of seeing wider and deeper interest in State and local history taken by citizens of California and especially by pupils in the schools. In adding this volume to the stories OF the states series, therefore, he has had constantly in mind the needs of that great army Of boys and girls in our public and private schools, whose lives should be enriched and ennobled by intelligent instruction in the history of our great, sovereign State. While it is earnestly hoped that the book will be of interest to that numerous constituency known as general readers, it has been more particularly de signed for use as a textbook or as a supplementary reader in the upper grades of the grammar school.
