Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic Inspection Copy available for instructors here The field of social psychology is defined by a number of 'classic studies' that all students need to understand and engage with. These include ground-breaking experiments by researchers such as Asch, Festinger, Milgram, Sherif, Tajfel and Zimbardo. With the help of international experts who are renowned for work that has extended upon these researchers' insights, this book re-examines these classic studies through careful reflection on their findings and a lively discussion of the subsequent work that they have inspired. Organized in a way that way maps onto the content of most introductory courses, this title can work at a number of levels: as an accessible text for introductory classes that present a historical analysis of social psychology via its key studies, or as a broad-ranging text for higher-level courses that survey contemporary theory and encourage critical thinking. More generally, it is a compelling read for anyone who wants to know more about social psychology and the dramatic studies that lie at its heart.

Book The Scientific Study of Abnormal Behavior

Download or read book The Scientific Study of Abnormal Behavior written by Abraham S. Blumberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of abnormal psychology, too often data are collected and presented in terms of, or in relation to, some overall "theory of behavior," which they are then used to support or disprove. Although such findings are important in their own right, these data are nevertheless mainly used to support or to undermine the theory, which remains the real focus of interest throughout. An attempt has been made here to reduce this kind of bias. The aim of this book is to consider applications of the scientific principles of psychology to the field of abnormality, exemplified by selected studies involving the measurement and the manipulation of disordered behavior. Many psychologists interested in abnormal behavior have addressed their problems with methods derived from their own discipline, rather than with techniques borrowed uncritically from the medical arts. This book, through a consideration of the procedures and findings of a number of different examples of the scientific study of abnormal behavior, identifies some general principles that will show how these methods might profitably be extended to cover the whole field of behavioral disorder. Most of the material in this classic volume describes what had been achieved by the behavioral attack upon psychiatric problems at the time of its original publication. The approach is intended to assist students in assimilating the relevant information without being either swamped by, or confined to, detail. This end can be served by James Inglis' concise overview of a number of different topics, each having its tentative place within a broader scheme. Description has given way to scientific models and the testing of their hypotheses by experimental methods. As a result, the scientific literature of abnormal psychology has grown tremendously, and one book cannot contain all the findings except in an abstract encapsulated form. This, of course, forces the author to select from the vast amount of material a

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Abnormal Psychology, Vol. 1 Since 1t has been recognized, in the last few years, that, in addition to hysteria, psychasthenia also may occasion epileptiform seizures, the differential diagnosis has become even more difficult. It cannot too strongly be emphasized that the diagnosis epilepsy is justifiable only when all other diseases which are capable of inducing epileptiform attacks, particularly hysteria and psychasthenia, either positively can be excluded or recognized as associated conditions. For it is quite common to encounter patients in whom hysteria or psychasthenia have been superimposed upon an epileptic foundation, just as multiple sclerosis usually is complicated by hysteria. Download or read book Textbook of Abnormal Psychology Classic Reprint written by Roy M. Dorcus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Textbook of Abnormal Psychology In the second place, I am impressed with the critical balance of the book. Giving the various isms and theories their places, the authors avoid imposing on the reader either isms or emotional anti-isms (which is more than I can say for my own writings). Without being subjected to the stress of violent iconoclasm, the reader is prepared for immunity to both pseudo-psychological novelties and ancient superstitions. There are various points of interpretation, of course, on which I should take issue with the authors; and on some of these points I should possibly be right. These features of the presentation, however, in crease my appreciation of, and respect for, the whole. The authors, and the psychological profession are to be congratulated on this magnum opus, which demonstrates, among other things, that scientifically minded psychiatrists and psychologists can work together in harmony and fruitfulness: for, it should be said, this book has a history which is not superficially Obvious; and in that history, Dr. Chapman has played a part of no small importance.
