Book Sermons on Bible Subjects Vol 3 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons on Bible Subjects Vol 3 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Frederick William Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Bible Subjects, Vol. 3 of 3 Genesis xxxu., 28, 29. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. The complexion of this story is peculiarly Jewish. It contains three points which are especially interesting to every Jew in a national point of view. It explained to him why he was called Israelite. It traces the origin Of his own name, Israelite, to a distant ancestor, who had signally exhibited religious strength, and been, in the language Of those times, a wrestler with God, from whence he had Obtained the name Israel. It casts much deep and curious interest round an otherwise insignificant Village, Peniel, where his transaction had taken place, and which derived its name from it, Peniel, the face of God. And, besides, it explained the origin of a singular custom, which might seem a superstitious one, Of not suffering a particular muscle to be eaten, and regarding it with a kind Of religious awe, as the part in which Jacob was said by tradition to have been injured, by the earnest tension of his frame during this struggle. SO far all is Jewish, narrow, merely of local Interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ninety Six Sermons Vol 3

Download or read book Ninety Six Sermons Vol 3 written by Lancelot Andrewes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ninety-Six Sermons, Vol. 3: By the Right Honourable and Reverend Father in God The present volume contains nineteen Discourses; the remainder of those preached on Easter-day, on our Lord's Resurrection, and the whole series preached on Whit-Sunday, on the Sending of the Holy Ghost. Of those on the Resurrection, the first four were preached before King James I. at Whitehall, between the years 1620 and 1623, both inclusive; and the last was only prepared for delivery on Easter-day 1624, but was never actually preached. With respect to the subject-matter of these Sermons little need be said. The first three are occupied with a consideration of the great love and devotion displayed by St. Mary Magdalene, at the tomb of her Divine Master; together with a particular examination of the probable grounds which induced our blessed Saviour to repress her ardent zeal, and through her to inculcate upon us the necessity of spiritualizing our affections, and at the same time of reposing with implicit confidence upon Him, Who is at once our Father and our God. The two last discourses in this series, from different texts, enforce the same practical lesson, namely, the obligation which is laid upon every Christian of making a suitable and correspondent return for the great blessings of salvation. The Sermons preached on Whit-Sunday, on the Sending of the Holy Ghost, come next under consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred and Ninety Sermons, Vol. 3 of 3: On the Hundred and Nineteenth Psalm Verse 124. - Deal with thy servant according to thy mercy and teach me thy statutes. In this verse, we have two requests, the one general, the other partien lar; wherein he would have the Lord exercise his mercy to him, Show thy mercy to me, in teaching me thy law.' The one respects the privilege part of religion, the other the duty part. The one concerns time past, or the pardon of sin already committed, Deal with thy servant according to thy mercy; the other, prevention of sin for the time to come, That I may perform my duty for the future, teach me thy statutes. Mercy is the ground of his request; teaching God's law, the matter of it. He would have this gift bestowed on him freely.
