Book The Douglas Kennedy Collection 3

Download or read book The Douglas Kennedy Collection 3 written by Douglas Kennedy and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 1334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three outstanding novels in one amazing ebook collection by internationally bestselling author Douglas Kennedy. The Moment: Divorced writer Thomas Nesbitt is still recovering from the end of a long marriage and living a private, isolated life in Maine when, out of the blue, a box from Berlin arrives at his doorstep. The return address shocks him: Dussman, the name of a woman with whom he had a consuming love affair twenty-six years ago in the midst of the Cold War. Now Thomas must grapple with his history with a woman who was not just a refugee from a police state, but also someone who lived with an ongoing sorrow that gradually rewrote both their destinies. A love story of great epic sweep and immense emotional power, The Moment explores why and how we fall in love—and the way we project on to others that which our hearts so desperately seek. Five Days: A transformative love affair envelopes insurance salesman Richard and married, soon-to-be empty nester Laura at a weekend medical conference in Boston. Laura discovers that the seemingly dull fiftysomething man is surprisingly complex and thoughtful—someone who, like herself, is grappling with the same big questions about decisions made and the human capacity for self-entrapment. But can this potential, much-longed-for happiness be married to their own difficult personal circumstances? Can they upend their lives and embrace that most loaded of words: change? The Blue Hour: Artist and university professor Paul suggests a month-long trip with his wife to entrancing, exotic Morocco. But when Paul suddenly disappears, Robin finds herself the prime suspect in the police inquiry. As her understanding of the truth starts to unravel, Robin lurches from the crumbling art deco of Casablanca to the daunting Sahara, caught in an increasingly terrifying spiral from which there is no easy escape.

Don't wear a suit' Dr Michael Lowell—a mild–mannered American, unshakeably decent and at the top of his profession—accepts an invitation to a weekend reunion of Oxford college friends. He is looking forward to meeting some of them—including front-line Canadian medic Hélène Hevré and the Australian advertising genius Toby Jenks. But the big attraction is the serene young woman from Karachi who rejected him twenty years ago because he was 'just a little bit too dull'. As the weekend gets under way and old loves and tensions arise, an audacious suggestion is made. It begins as a joke. But it is a joke that none of them can forget. Moving between Oxford, New York, Washington, Geneva and Abidjan, this compelling political thriller is the story of five ordinary people who find themselves drawn into an extraordinary conspiracy—a gamble that could force the hand of governments and affect the lives of millions. But if it should go wrong ... Daring, ingenious and profoundly moving, The Kennedy Moment is masterful storytelling from an author whose career has put him at the heart of international affairs.

Book The Makeover in Movies

Download or read book The Makeover in Movies written by Elizabeth A. Ford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-04-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plots of many films pivot on the moment when a dowdy girl with bad hair, ill-fitting outdated clothing, and thick glasses is changed into an almost unrecognizable glamour girl. Makeover scenes such as these are examined beginning with 1942's Now, Voyager. The study examines whether the film makeover is voluntary or involuntary, whether it is always successful, how much screen time it takes up, where in the narrative structure it falls, and how the scene is actually filmed. Films with a Pygmalion theme, such as My Fair Lady, Vertigo, and Shampoo, are examined in terms of gender relations: whether the man is content with his creation and what sort of woman is the ideal. Some films' publicity capitalizes on a glamorous star's choice to play an unattractive character, as discussed in a chapter examining stars like Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, and Cameron Diaz. Topics also include folk literature's Cinderella tale, men as the inspiration for makeovers in teen flicks films like Clueless, She's All That, and Me, Natalie, and class repositioning in such movies as Working Girl, Pretty Woman, and Grease. Photographs are presented in a before/after format, showing the change in the madeover character.
