It is intended as a permanent record of many facts, besides a statement of the activities of members during the period since the publication of the last report. The class "lives," the pictures, the tables and statistical matter have all been gathered and made especially for purposes of record, in conformity with a practice among the classes in their twenty-fifth anniversary reports, which has been developing for the past twenty years and reached the present completeness of treatment a very few years ago. Because of the size of the book no attempt has been made to reprint in form adapted to date professor Gardiner's excellent monograph, and map, "Harvard, 1885-1905," published in Report VI, pp. 117-137 inclusive, or any similar treatment of university development. In preparing for this anniversary and report the secretary has had some touch with every member of the class except Collins, and with every temporary member except Ferris. Such as it is, with no claims and with no apologies, this report goes out as requested and directed by the class for publication at commencement, 1910. Without their assist once this report would have been incomplete indeed. Let me again thank the many men who have sent me such cordial greetings and good wishes with their communications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1885: Secretary's Report No; II, 1888-89 To the Class of Eighty-five: - It was my sincere hope, apart from all selfish motives for escaping the work, that this second report of your secretary to the class should be entirely the work of your first choice for that office, Walter A. Halbert, and as such, when completed, a cherished souvenir of a most beloved class-officer. It was he who began the task, now more than a year ago, and to him is due the credit of obtaining by far the largest part of the material for the report in the form of the lives which follow. Even after he had felt obliged to resign from the office of secretary, he continued the preparation of this report, and only gave it up when he found that his continued ill-health did not enable him to do more work than his regular daily duties called for. Since that time the work of completing the report has been my care, and it is for me to bear the responsibility for any defects or errors which appear in it as it stands. In the Lives, I have endeavored to let each man tell his story in his own words as nearly as possible. Where any one has failed to throw information returned on his blank into the form of a sketch, I have endeavored to do it for him to the best of my ability; and where, as has sometimes happened, no return whatever has been made in reply to my numerous entreaties and autograph letters, I have had to supply such defects either from personal knowledge of the actions of the delinquents, or by inquiries among and information supplied by other classmates familiar with them. It has been my aim to have the returns as complete as possible, and I have made every endeavor to reach even those among the temporary members of the class who have never made any previous returns to class documents or inquiries. The result has been gratifying, and the report will be found to contain at least something about every one of our one hundred and ninety-one graduates, and about all of the temporary members, except four. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1885: Secretary's Report No; III, 1892 To The Class of Eighty-five: Again it becomes the pleasant duty of your secretary to spread before you his triennial collection of personal sketches and a general history of the class for the past three years. This period has been of much moment to Eighty-five, the professional men have followed their business brethren in settling down into their places for their chosen life-work, and now at the end of seven years since graduation the real life of the class takes shape and it is possible at last to know where to put a finger on the great part of us. We are still young; to most the greater part of life is still before us. Ours is the vigor, the spirit, and the ability to accomplish, - of the young horse, fresh broken to harness. The playful friskiness of South and of the untamed colt is gone, but the strength of the man is now in us. We are anxious to do much, to be much to the world, and, as we feel for the first time our new responsibilities and the worlds formalities, like the horses harness upon us, we are apt to be impatient of their restraint, and to cast longing glances backward at the old freedom of college days and life together in Cambridge. But such glances are but momentary; our faces are really to the front. The restraints, the burdens, are soon as natural as the old freedom, and he who bursts the bonds, be he not a Pegasus soaring above earthly things, is but a mad runaway who wrecks his burden and destroys himself. May our records be free from such! The necrology to be told is the sad part of the secretary's duty in class reports. Well-known faces have been taken from us in these three short years, and the class misses Allen, Bridge Briggs, Hobbs, W. W. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1878 Secretary's Report, Vol. 7 To The Members of the Class of Eighteen Hundred and Seventy-Eight. The secretary presents herewith Class Report No. VII. No. VI appeared in 1908. Since then the class has suffered a most serious loss in the death of Joseph C. Whitney in 1911, who had been the secretary since graduation. The present report is made up in the main from answers to circulars sent out by the secretary in 1914 and 1915. Noticing that in the last Quinquennial Catalogue of the College the rank of the first ten men in each class at graduation was given, it occurred to the secretary that it would be interesting to obtain from the college archives the rank list of the entire class. He accordingly applied for and secured such a list and has had it printed in the report. He has also printed the names of members of the Phi Beta Kappa society from our class. These are the only two novelties. At the end of the report appear reproductions of recent photographs of such members as were willing to send their pictures to the secretary, also pictures of some deceased members. In 1914 William Howard Taft, Yale 1878, was elected an honorary member of the class, and it was also voted that the graduates of the Lawrence Scientific School who received the degrees of S. B. in 1878 should be treated in all respects as members of the class. Accordingly they have been invited to attend our dinners and meetings since that date, and we have enjoyed the presence of several of their number.
