There is no simple relation between education and gender equality. As with social class relations, schools both reinforce subordination and create new possibilities for liberation, and these contradictions occur at every level and in every aspect of education. Schools are sites of pervasive gender socialization, but they offer girls a chance to use their brains and develop their skills. To explore education and gender is to examine the bridge between the public world of occupations and the private world of families. Schools link the families from which young children come and the sex- and race-segregated occupational worlds to which they are sent. Because schools link public and private worlds, help to form consciousness, and structure inequalities, there are many ways to look at gender and education. In this book, the chapters break into four major topic areas. The first section analyzes gender and education from a comparative and historical perspective, the second section on ‘Diversity, Social Control, and Resistance in Classrooms’, third section, on ‘Gender and Knowledge’ and the final section on ‘families and school’.

The introductory discussion examines the theory that the state and consequently, the education system are seen as having the promulgation of the dominant class hegemony as an important part of its function. The document also traces the interaction between gender and education in the domestic curriculum, vocational opportunities, and the working conditions of women teachers. In the first three readings, Sara Delamont looks at ways to counter sexism during the child's formative years; Dale Spender discusses the different ways that males get more attention in the classroom; and R. W. Connell, D. J. Ashenden, S. Kessler and G. W. Dowsett point out that schools differentiate between male and female students in ways which reinforce sex stereotypes. The results of the study carried out in 1974 by the Schools Commission on "Girls, School and Society," is discussed in reading four. In reading five, Jean Blackburn discusses removing formal barriers to access to education for girls and boys, and in the final reading Jane Kenway and Sue Willis offer alternatives to single-sex schooling as a solution to unequal education. Abraham concludes, however, that recent government reforms in education are more likely to hinder than further these proposals.

Book excerpt: During the past two decades, the surge of religious fundamentalism in the United States and in the Muslim world has resulted in many studies of the status of women and other family issues. This volume is a cross-cultural study of women's social status in Iran, Egypt, and in the U.S. during different stages of religious fundamentalism. In each of these countries, women have been active participants in fundamentalist movements, and this study shows that such participation enables women to reexamine their relationship to power in the family and in society and increase their group solidarity and feminist consciousness. The author combined quantitative, historical, and interview techniques in her analysis, gathering data by administering a questionnaire to middle-class women in the three countries. In Iran, she interviewed selected women leaders about future gender roles in the Islamic Republic. Students in women's studies, Middle Eastern culture, religion, history, sociology, and psychology, and political science will be interested in this publication.
