Book excerpt: Remarkable paintings grace the pages of Maria Chapdelaine, a novel written by a Frenchman yet embraced by generations of Canadian readers. Renowned Canadian artist Clarence Gagnon used a meticulous process to create fifty-four small paintings for Louis Hémon's early twentieth-century story set in the Quebec countryside. Gagnon's vivid illustrations depict the strength of body and soul necessary to survive such a harsh environment. In Clarence Gagnon: The "Maria Chapdelaine" Illustrations, art historian and curator Ian M. Thom provides insight into Gagnon's life and an appreciation of his art. All of the Gagnon Maria Chapdelaine illustrations are reproduced in this book, with excerpts from the novel. The complete set of paintings resides in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, where it is considered a rare treasure.

Book excerpt: It takes a hardy people to survive farming the harsh lands of the French Canadian wilderness, and Maria Chapdelaine must choose either to remain Québécois in this unforgiving land that has broken her heart, or to pursue a softer urban life in foreign New England. French writer Louis Hémon wrote Maria Chapdelaine during the two years he lived in Quebec, and it’s based on his experiences working on a farm in the Lac Saint-Jean region where the novel is set. It was his only work published in his lifetime, as he died in a tragic train accident before learning of its success. The novel is described as a masterwork that was Canada’s entry into world literature and Quebec’s introduction to the rest of the Francophone world. An enduring work, it has served as the basis of four movies, and has been adapted into plays, an illustrated novel, a radio novel, a television series, and an opera.

Book Impressionism in Canada

Download or read book Impressionism in Canada written by A. K. Prakash and published by Arnoldsche Verlagsanstalt GmbH. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impressionist paintings are among the most prized artworks in the world, yet little has been written about Canadian impressionism. Now, with this book, we have a full account of the development of this revolutionary style in painting during the four decades after 1875, first in France, then in the United States, and finally in Canada. From the late 1860s on, as ambitious young artists from North America went to study in the academies in Paris and travel in Europe, they absorbed the influence of impressionism. By the mid-1880s, after it crossed the Atlantic to Boston and New York, Impressionism quickly became the favored style of art in the United States. As the century came to a close in Canada's two largest cities, Montreal and Toronto, Impressionism gradually gathered the support the returning Canadian painters needed from art dealers, collectors, exhibition societies, and the media. Within this context, the lives and works of fourteen fo the most significant Canadian artists, including William Blair Bruce, Maurice Cullen, J.W. Morrice, Laura Muntz Lyall, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté, Helen McNicoll, and Clarence Gagnon, are examined in the second half of the volume. Briefly considered too are several other artists, such as core members of the famed Group of Seven, who for some time also employed Impressionist techniques in their art. Today, Canadian Impressionist paintings are not only among the most popular works of art at home but are attracting ever more attention and exhibition exposure in other countries too. With a Foreword by Guy Wildenstein and an Introduction by William H. Gerdts, this work has been extensively researched and lavishly illustrated with 494 plates and 159 figures. As such, it becomes the definitive volume on Canada's contribution to Impressionism - the most important development in Western art since the Renaissance.

Book excerpt: Originating in England in the mid 1950s, Pop Art developed its full potential in the USA in the 1960s. It substitutes the everyday for the splendid; mass-produced articles are assigned the same importance as one-offs; the difference between high culture and popular culture is swept away. Media and advertising are among the preferred contents of Pop Art, which celebrates the consumer society in its own witty fashion. The enthusiasm generated by Pop Art since the first works were exhibited has never died down -- it is greater today than ever before. Book jacket.
