Father Ezra Velez, a priest fueled by a deep devotion to his great-grandmother Jasmine, dares to make a daring plea to be transferred to a parish nestled within the heart of the city's impoverished slums. Well acquainted with the hardships that plague these downtrodden areas, Father Ezra embarks on a mission to a community on the brink of forced eviction and indifference. In this harsh and indifferent landscape, where his masses are sparsely attended and vices overshadow virtues, Father Ezra faces an arduous uphill battle. The residents appear resigned to their grim fate, yielding to the pressures of ruthless enforcers and the looming specter of displacement. Undeterred, Father Ezra rallies his allies: his compassionate cousin, the esteemed doctor Gabriella Velez Calister, his wise grandfather Sergio Velez, a seasoned denizen of the slums, and his spirited rebel-activist comrades Samantha and Sophia. Together, this diverse band of rebels and believers embarks on a quest to kindle a flame of hope within the hearts of the slum dwellers. Through their collective efforts and unwavering resolve, they strive to offer a glimpse of a brighter tomorrow and a cause worth fighting for. Book excerpt: COLONIAL MIXED BLOOD The navies built by the Arabs and King Solomon plied the oceans long ago. The Portuguese, Dutch, and British followed suit, and eventually the oceans were mastered. The colonial age came into being and brought with it increased movements of people and the mixing of genes. In Colonial Mixed Blood, author Allan Russell Juriansz, who was born in Sri Lanka, provides an account of this occurrence with reference to the Portuguese, Dutch, and British who colonized Sri Lanka for the period of the past five hundred years. The story begins in Riga, Latvia, in the late 1400s and centres on the Ondatjes and the Juriansz clan, their love story, their immersion in Christianity, and their struggles to survive the forces of colonialism and find happiness. A blend of history and fiction, Colonial Mixed Blood provides a background of the religious forces at work during this time in Europe and outlines the genealogy and life experiences of Juriansz’s family as part of the colonial activity of the Dutch East India Company in Sri Lanka. They inherited an adventurous spirit from their first Dutch ancestors, and this spirit inspired their diaspora. But it was one hundred and fifty years of intense British influence that transformed them into loyal British subjects.

Download or read book And the Waters Shall Cover the Earth written by Forbes Bramble and published by Arena books. This book was released on 2008-12-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob de Vries, arrives from Holland with his wife, Cristeen, and daughter, Katja, to a remote part of East Anglia to undertake the drainage of the swamps and meres of Oxay Fen. In doing so he is unaware of walking into a melee arousing political passions which divide the community. The great project ahead - in continuing the work of Vermuyden forty years earlier - in transforming an ancient landscape and way of life, is financed by the landowners, led by John Warburton. But the village people see this as the theft of their fowl, fish, and eels, and their very livelihood, and are determined to oppose those who call for change. For John Warburton and his friends, the work is essential for the recovery of what they regard as theirs. The prize is the realisation of fine pasture and rich fields. In this situation a drama is played out involving night raids, arson, and the suspicion of witchcraft, and the tension is not subdued by the arrival of the militia.Foremost in the resistance is Clara, the fearsome blacksmith, who gains an unexpected ally in Emms, the vicar, the latter who refuses to reject the evidence of his own eyes as ancient artefacts and even a body emerge from the diggings. Another dissident is John Sylam, a childhood friend of Clara, and then one of the drainage partners begins to doubt the wisdom of the venture, and fears the effect it may have on the wider community. Kayja, too, has her different problems, as her heart is perturbed by several young men in the neighbourhood, and then a skating disaster and nature takes its own revenge in a devastating climax. This is a magnificently poetic and atmospheric novel describing the fens and fenland life in the 1690s. The authenticity of the tale is brought alive by the descriptions of the environment with its mists and distant horizons, its characters and their dialogue, in a way which few historical novels are able to match.
