Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Claim Number One In that case you merely paused at Comanche, like the railroad, to wait the turn of events. Beyond Comanche was the river, and beyond the river, dim-lined in the west, the mountains. Between the river and the mountains lay the reservation from which the government had pushed the Indians, and which it had cut into parcels to be drawn by lot. Download or read book The Abandoned Claim Classic Reprint written by Flora Haines Loughead and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Abandoned Claim "How long has he been this way?" It was a physician who spoke, a gray-bearded, elderly man, with a gruff, professional air, and kind blue eyes that belied his manner. "He was taken down about three quarters of an hour ago. But, if you'll excuse me, sir, I think it's been coming on for some time. He's been queer and shaky-like for weeks. Started in to work this morning, and dropped down all in a heap, as you see him." The rays of the morning sun entered the tall windows of the furniture factory, and filtered through the dust-laden air until they reached the corner where the speakers were standing. All work was suspended, and the frank faces of the workmen wore a common expression of honest concern over the calamity that had overtaken one of their number. Book The Rightful Claims of Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rightful Claims of Women Classic Reprint written by Thomas J. Haslam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rightful Claims of Women The relationship between man and woman, in its ideal form, is the tenderest that the human imagination can well conceive; nevertheless, incredible as it may appear, and reluctant as we, men may be to acknowledge it, one of the most melancholy chapters in human experience has been the treatment of women by their loving partners in that supreme relationship. I have no wish to exaggerate against my own sex; but, so far as I know, - w'ith plenty of individual exceptions at all times, and with an ever increasing number of such exceptions in these days, - there has never been a period, and there has never been a country, in which, speaking generally, women have been dealt with equitably, either socially or politically. Amongst savage races, - to begin with, - down even to our own times, - I have the highest authority for the statement that the men generally have no more conception of the rights of women than of the rights of dogs. In most cases, while they confine themselves to the more dignified occupations of hunting and fighting, they pile the accumulated burden of the servile drudgery, - out-door as well as in-door, upon their women. In nearly all cases, I believe, they exercise the right of either selling or killing their wives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Fourth Reader of the Popular Series Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Reader of the Popular Series IN calling the attention of educators to whatever, in this Fourth number, may be found peculiar in the character of a Reading Book for schools, we would refer, in addition to what is said here, to the explanatory preface of the Third Reader. It willobe seen that the plan of localizing events around a home centre of attraction, and carrying onward the same leading characters through the varying scenes incident to childhood and youth, and thence, still onward, into the sterner realities of life, continues to be a leading feature of the series, - a feature that is designed to give' continuity and increased interest to the entire work; and we are quite confident that it will be found to serve this purpose without diminishing the variety of matter required in a Reading Book, or in any degree impairing its educational value. Indeed, we think We may justly claim that our plan admits the possibility of the very greatest variety. We refer to the table of contents for some idea of our acknowledged selections from others, and of our still more numerous adaptations of such pieces as we have found suited to our purposes. Nor is this all; for while the slender web of fiction that runs throughout is of our own weaving, we have borrowed, from a great variety of sources, whatever hues and colors we have found best adapted to give interest and variety to the pattern. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ben Thorpe Lanville boys were an unknown type to Ben and a brand-new experience. Hackett selected two for that first walk back to the Saw Mill River, and they in turn per formed later ou such introductions to the crowd as were necessary. Heaven had bestowed upon Ben a gift of inestimable value, a personality that attracted those whom he liked, and he liked nearly every one who was of the male persuasion. He made no attempt to push himself to the fore among the Lanville boys, he made no claim to prowess in sports or in anything else, he did not bully boys smaller than himself, nor toady to bigger boys. He agreed with their Opinions almost always, he fell in with their plans; if sometimes he made suggestions he did it quietly, with a smile, without antagonizing. The boys learned quickly that he was a far better ball-player and swimmer than any other boy of his age in town, and that gave him prestige; there was about him, too, a certain calmness and good judgment that won respect. He quickly became a leader among them, though he made no attempt to as sume leadership. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But their publication in that form, has been the means of giving them a. Popularity which their author trusts justifies bimin reproducing them in a. Collected and more permanent shape. The Condensed Novels, to which this more particularly refers, claim no other originality in their general conception, than that shown by their title - a. He can only reply that, as the fact of other men having breathed before him does not discourage his consuming his share of the free air, so he, too, perforce, adds his expres sion of thoughts, appreciating that many may have said the same thing before, and may have said it more aptly, but still holding to the one main claim that no one before could possi bly have had the same particular attributive thought, as he here puts it into form and ex pression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Dorrit, Vol. 1 of 2 Her temperament will not go with mine. It mattered not so much when we had only ourselves to consider, but reasons have been growing since which make it all but hopeless that we should try even to struggle ou. You, he replies to Forster's remonstrance, are not so tolerant as perhaps you might be of the wayward and unsettled feeling which is part (i suppose) of the tenure on which one holds an imaginative life, and which I have, as you ought to know well, often only kept down by riding over it like a dragoon - but let that go by. I make no maudlin complaint. I agree with you as to the very possible incidents, even not less bearable than mine, that might and must often occur to the married condition when it is entered into very young. I am always deeply sensible of the wonderful exercise I have of life and its highest sensations, and have said to myself for years, and have honestly and truly felt, this is the drawback to such a career, and is not to be complained of. I say it and feel it now as strongly as ever I did; and, as I told you in my last, I do not with that view put all this forward. But the years have not made it easier to bear for either of us; and, for her sake as well as mine, the wish will force itself upon me that something might be done. I know too well it is impossible. There is the fact, and that is all one can say. Nor are you to suppose that I disguise from myself what might be urged on the other side. I claim no immunity from blame. There is plenty of fault on my side, I dare say, in the way of a thousand uncertainties, caprices, and difficulties of disposition; but only one thing will alter that, the end that alters everything. Book A Man in the Open Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Man in the Open Classic Reprint written by Roger Pocock and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Man in the Open The characters wish me to tell you that they are all Imaginary Persons, and therefore very sensitive. The persons of a drama are protected by footlights, by the stage doorkeeper, not to mention grease paint and scalps by an eminent artiste; but the characters in a novel are thrust defenseless into a rude world, with many reporters about. In a page fright, worse even than stage fright, their only comfort is that absence of body which is their alternative to your great gift, presence of mind. So they make their bow under assumed names. There we come to the point. The proper names were all dealt out to worldly grasping persons, and not one was left unclaimed. The name department is like a cloak-room when the guests have departed, a train from which all passengers have alighted, an office on Christ mas day. Can you blame the characters in fiction who come after you, if they assume the noblest names, such as Smith, and try to be worthy of their borrowedplumes? Surely you would not have them wear a numeral such as the number of your house, or tele phone. The chances are that they give you no offense. Sup pose that gentlemen named Jesse Smith number one in each million of English-speaking people, there would be one hundred in North America, half of them adults, with a moiety in wedlock, and, of these twenty five, a hundredth part may be stockmen, of whom say one per cent. Have a flaw in their Claim to wedlock. To this residuum, the 0025 part of a perfect gentle man, whom he has not the honor to know personally, our Mr. Smith tenders profound apologies. Book A Journey Around the World Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Journey Around the World Classic Reprint written by Edwin S. George and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Around the World No one, however intelligent, could begin to tell the story of the countries and people referred to in this volume. This book sets forth the impressions made upon the author by the glimpses obtained in a journey around the world, and it must be remembered that im pressions can honestly differ among truthful, observing, studious travelers. This diary was written at the request of a loved one who was unable to accompany me, and with whom I thus hoped, in a small degree, to share my daily experiences, but with no thought of publication. Its publication is due far more to the encouraging suggestions of friends, than from any confident promptings of my own. The author claims no qualifications whatsoever as a writer, but endeavored at all times to keep his mind free from prejudices, and alert to everything about him, and espe cially endeavored to see the good in all things, but frank in his statements of facts as observed and noted herein. It was not, however, until we were bound for the Orient and had reached strange lands, inhabited by strange people, with strange customs, that I was aroused to any serious effort in the writing of a daily narrative in which I endeavored to reflect the conditions surrounding the writer, for examme: India, depressing; China, smiles; Korea, tragic; Japan, attractive but imperialistic. Book In the Eyes of the East Classic Reprint

Download or read book In the Eyes of the East Classic Reprint written by Marjorie Latta Barstow Greenbie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Eyes of the East Yet I need hardly say that I have clung as strictly as possible to fact. The people in this book are all real people who still go up and down upon the highways of the world. Only in some cases I have introduced a de liberate, though transparent, confusion of non-essential detail, in order to provide any one who wishes to dis claim the portrait with an alibi. In some cases, too, I have used the dramatist's license, and have concentrated into brief episodes what was more widely scattered in time and space. But such liberties are comparatively rare, and, on the whole, my narrative is as close to fact as common courtesy and the art of the raconteur will permit. I have been under no temptation to invent, be cause the truth was always much more interesting than anything I could imagine. Yet, just because I was tell ing of unknown people and incidents that would offer no inspiration to the newspaper headline, I have adhered to one principle which seems necessary to raise such a record above triviality: I have written only of facts and people who would be interesting if they were ficti tious. And so I have tried to put into my book not only the pageantry of the East, but a little of the common heart of humanity. Book The Kingdom of the Unselfish Or Empire of the Wise Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Kingdom of the Unselfish Or Empire of the Wise Classic Reprint written by John Lord Peck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom of the Unselfish, or Empire of the Wise That it will meet with hostile criticism from those who fail to apprehend its best meaning is quite likely. That it can do any serious harm, however, is not probable; not ionly because its motive is good, and because it is better to know the truth than to believe the unreal, but also because the human mind seems disposed to appro priate what is adapted to its condition of growth, and to refuse all that is beyond. There are other persons who will be able to appreciate the most of it; and these too, in all kindness, may find much to criticise adversely. The author has been continually conscious of such im perfection, and in excuse must reply that the work under taken needed to be done; there was no one else to do it; and he has done the best he could. Whatever comments, friendly or unfriendly, may point out unseen faults, willbe accepted, and turned to good account in the future, when there shall be opportunity. Regarding the various dogmatic statements that will be found throughout the following pages, it must be said there was no time for proving everything, and these were left to prove themselves while the justification of the book as a whole is trusted to justify this mode of pro ceeding. Whatever failure there is to give credit for ideas used that are not original has the same reason for a par tial excuse; another part will be found on page 139, and in the whole of the succeeding chapter; while it may also be said that they are mostly such as are already familiar to persons acquainted with the progress and present con dition of Science. For similar reasons, no better claim is made for anything else that is here presented. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The aphorism that one half the world does not know how the other half lives may well find its application here. So long as men continue to gather together in odd corners of the land, so long Will be found in their midst some whose presence owes itself to the fact that civilization will no longer tolerate them Openly. Such men admit no ties but those of self interest claim no kinship beyond the common origin. In the seclusion of the outback they are at liberty to revert to grossness unspeakable.
