Book The Building Envelope

Download or read book The Building Envelope written by Alan J Brookes and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Building Envelope: Applications of New Technology Cladding provides an introduction to the state of the art in cladding systems. The goal is to show a precedent, and thus imbue confidence in architects so that they can approach a manufacturer with a reasonable working knowledge of what is feasible. This book contains 33 case studies of buildings which incorporate newer forms of construction technology. The buildings discussed include the Bandstand at Haarlem, Holland; Benthem and Crouwel's House at Almere, a town near Amsterdam, Holland; the Burrell Gallery in Glasgow, Scotland; Clarke Ascot House, Brisbane, Australia; the Conservatory at Kew, southwest London; and the Johnson and Johnson World Headquarters, New Brunswick, New Jersey. This book is intended to give at least some inspiration to designers wishing to improve their technical understanding of the newer building processes with which they are now involved and have the information available if they care to seek it.

Book Wind Issues in the Design of Buildings

Download or read book Wind Issues in the Design of Buildings written by Leighton Cochran and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind Issues in the Design of Buildings explains the ways that structural designers accommodate the impact of extreme wind events on the built environment. By studying the flow and pressure fields around buildings, architects and engineers can identify and select the best strategies for ensuring that a building will resist the loads due to high winds, maintaining pleasant conditions in outdoor spaces, assessing natural ventilation potential, and seeing that any exhaust fumes are dispersed adequately. This volume identifies wind characteristics and describes the effects of winds generated by hurricanes, tornadoes, and thunderstorms. It explains the internal and external pressures on a building's cladding (skin) and the effects of wind-borne debris. A building's response to the structural loads caused by wind is outlined, along with techniques for resisting wind. A chapter is devoted to wind tunnels and physical modeling to predict structural loads, cladding response, pedestrian experience, topographic effects, and snow deposition. A section of frequently asked questions, a glossary, and recommended reading make this material in this volume accessible to students and nontechnical members of project teams. Structural engineers and architects will find this book a useful aide in explaining wind-related issues to clients, builders, building officials, and owners. Students in structural and architectural engineering will welcome the clear, concise presentation of an important component of structural design.

Book Timber Cladding

Download or read book Timber Cladding written by Russell Black and published by . This book was released on 2015-05 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a cladding material, timber has a long history of successful residential use. Cladding materials and skills needed for building and installation of traditional claddings have changed over the years. The conditions for building new timber-clad buildings have also changed over the years. Sites that would have earlier been avoided are now being built, and buildings are also larger and more complex. Other factors, such as weathertight issues, have become more relevant. Designers have to consider carefully how they will achieve weathertight cladding solutions when traditional materials are being employed to satisfy home owners' demands for complex buildings on more exposed sites. This guide gives a comprehensive overview of the issues to be addressed by designers and installers of timber claddings.

Book Impact of Cladding on Mid rise Buildings in the Northridge Earthquake

Download or read book Impact of Cladding on Mid rise Buildings in the Northridge Earthquake written by Chuan-Hua Kuo and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the importance of cladding panels on mid-rise buildings in an earthquake-prone region is investigated. A cladding panel acts as a protective or an insulating layer to control weather infiltration. The Northridge Earthquake, which took place on January 17, 1994, caused numerous heavy cladding panels to fall off the walls of residential and commercial buildings. The failure of these panels was a result of an insufficient understanding of the cladding behaviors as a subsystem in the three-dimensional framing system. Cladding is designed to be isolated from the structural frame movement during an earthquake. However, numerous studies have concluded that cladding interacts with the structural frame in providing lateral resistance. The advantages and disadvantages of different cladding materials, cladding systems, and cladding connections are presented in this thesis. The effects of cladding on mid-rise buildings in the Northridge Earthquake in the Los Angeles area are simulated in this study. Motion resistance contributed from cladding in a particular mid-rise building, a 19-story office building in downtown Los Angeles, is investigated. Analyses of clad models and unclad models are carried out, and clad models are discovered to displace less than unclad models. Therefore, cladding is able to contribute lateral motion resistance to a building during an earthquake, and structural engineers should include cladding in their analysis models when designing a building.

Download or read book Fa ades written by Ulrich Knaack and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2014-09-05 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to building façades as revised edition Façades determine the appearance of a building. Hence, they constitute a major element in architecture. At the same time, the building’s envelope has important functions to fulfil, such as lighting, weatherproofing, thermal insulation, load transfer and sound insulation. Over the past 15 years, façades have become increasingly complex – ‘intelligent’ facades, for instance, adapt to changing climate and lighting conditions. Newly developed materials and technologies have broadened the scope of façade functions. This book demonstrates the principles of façade construction. It systematically describes the most common types, such as post-and-beam façade, curtain wall, corridor façade or double façade, and provides guidelines for appropriate detailing. Numerous drawings made especially for the book explain the principles of different types of facades, which are then illustrated with built examples. For this second edition, all chapters were revised and all four examples in the case studies chapter were replaced by new material. The new chapter “Future Façades” offers insights into what’s next.
