Book excerpt: "Civil War Regiments from Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island," details the operational and enlistment history of the various infantry and cavalry regiments and artillery batteries from these New England states. Vermont raised 17 infantry regiments, 3 sharpshooter companies, 3 light artillery batteries, 1 heavy artillery regiment, and 1 cavalry regiment. Nine of Vermont's regiments made William F. Fox's "300 Fighting Regiments" found in "Regimental Losses in the American Civil War." Almost 20 percent of Vermont's troops died while in service to the Union. Eighteen-hundred died in battle or from wounds received in battle and 3,400 died from non-combat related causes. New Hampshire raised 18 infantry regiments, 1 cavalry battalion, 1 cavalry regiment, 1 light artillery battery, 2 heavy artillery companies, 1 heavy artillery regiment, and 3 sharpshooter companies. Joab Nelson Patterson wrote the entry for New Hampshire. Patterson began the war as a private and eventually reached the rank of Brevet Brigadier General. Eight New Hampshire regiments can be found in Fox's list of "300 fighting Regiments." New Hampshire suffered a 16.7 percent casualty rate during the war. Nearly 2,000 were killed in combat or died of wounds, and another 3,000 died from disease. Rhode Island, written by Elisha Hunt Rhodes, raised for service to the union 8 regiments of infantry, 10 batteries of light artillery, 3 cavalry regiments, 1 cavalry squadron, and 3 regiments of heavy artillery, one of which was all African-American. Elisha Hunt Rhodes enlisted in the 2nd RI Infantry as a private and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Brevet Colonel by war's end. The 2nd Rhode Island Infantry is the onlyregiment from that state to be listed in Fox's "300 Fighting Regiments." Rhode Island lost 460 men in combat and 861 to disease and other causes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many regiments that fought in the Civil War each had their own stories to tell about what they saw, smelled, tasted, heard and felt while serving in war. The Second Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment saw its first combat at the Battle of Bull Run and fought on to Lee's surrender. This richly illustrated work draws from service, pension and court-martial records, and personal letters and diaries to portray the junior officers, noncommissioned officers, and privates of the regiment as they were in battle, on the march, and in camp. Some were heroes, like Private William W. Noyes, awarded the Medal of Honor, and others were not, like Private George E. Blowers, executed for desertion. A roster of the 1,858 men who served in the regiment is provided.

Book Death Seem d to Stare

Download or read book Death Seem d to Stare written by Joseph Lee Boyle and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2005 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death Seem'd to Stare marks Joseph Lee Boyle's third book honoring the identities of the heroes of the six-month encampment at Valley Forge in 1777-1778. (Earlier volumes dealt with the New Jersey and Connecticut regiments at Valley Forge.) His latest volume examines the New Hampshire and Rhode Island contingents.Mr. Boyle's informative Introduction traces the service of the New Hampshire and Rhode Island regiments before and after they joined General Washington in November 1777. The New Hampshire units, for example, fought opposite portions of General Burgoyne's army at Hubbardton, Vermont; and, later, under General Benedict Arnold at the Battle of Freeman's Farm. For their part, the Rhode Island regiments participated in the American defeat of a Hessian assault on Fort Mercer, New Jersey, in October of the same year. The core of "Death Seem'd to Stare" consists of an alphabetical list in excess of 2,500 New Hampshire and Rhode Island soldiers abstracted from Revolutionary War muster and payrolls. Each patriot is identified by name, rank, date, and term of enlistment or commission, names of regiment and company, and a variety of supporting details, such as date of furlough or discharge, when wounded, when and where promoted, etc.
