Download or read book Counter terrorist Law and Emergency Powers in the United Kingdom 1922 2000 written by Laura K. Donohue and published by Collected Poems of James Clare. This book was released on 2001 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the first Special Powers Act in 1922, passed to reduce violence in Northern Ireland after it was calved off from Ireland, Donohue (government, Harvard U.) examines the repeated introduction and exercise of extraordinary powers to counter Northern Irish political violence on both sides of the Irish Sea. She argues that characteristics of the emergency legislation itself, and the historical and political context contributed to the permanent adoption of what were always meant as temporary emergency measures. Download or read book Oakeshott on Rome and America written by Gene Callahan and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-07-04 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political systems of the Roman Republic were based almost entirely on tradition, "the way of the ancestors", rather than on a written constitution. While the founders of the American Republic looked to ancient Rome as a primary model for their enterprise, nevertheless, in line with the rationalist spirit of their age, the American founders attempted to create a rational set of rules that would guide the conduct of American politics, namely, the US Constitution. These two examples offer a striking case of the ideal types, famously delineated by Michael Oakeshott in "Rationalism in Politics" and elsewhere, between politics as a practice grounded in tradition and politics as a system based on principles flowing from abstract reasoning. This book explores how the histories of the two republics can help us to understand Oakeshott's claims about rational versus traditional politics. Through examining such issues we may come to understand better not only Oakeshott's critique of rationalism, but also modern constitutional theory, issues in the design of the European Union, and aspects of the revival of republicanism.

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.
