Book excerpt: "The goal of the Citywide Action Plan is to upgrade 50 per cent of the existing unplanned and unserviced areas by 2020 while simultaneously preventing the formation of new unplanned settlements in Dar es Salaam. The thematic action plans on land, basic services, housing and capacity building are divided into short-term (2010), medium-term (2011-2015) and long-term (2015-2020) periods and include cost estimates for all actions. The Action Plan is the result of a consultative process involving all city stakeholders and partners, driven since 2005 by the Government of Tanzania and the Dar es Salaam Local Authorities, with technical assistance from UN-HABITAT and funding from Cities Alliance. It is intended that the implementation of this Action Plan, in close collaboration with other ongoing programmes, will be managed by a citywide slum upgrading and prevention programme unit, to be established at the Dar es Salaam local authority level. The Action Plan is expected to contribute to achieving the goals of MKUKUTA (National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction, National Vision 2025, National Housing Policy, and the MDG targets related to water, sanitation, and slums."--Page 4 of cover.

The book starts by discussing the meaning and significance of agogics in the musical and artistic realm, with reference to the work of Adolphe Appia, Emile-Jaques Dalcroze, and Iannis Xenakis, among others. Its relevance to cartography and mapping is then examined, taking into account the contributions of Ian McHarg, Bill Hillier, Mark Shepard, and Robin Minard. The nature and value of agogic maps, for example in fostering awareness of place and effective organization of spatial development, are described in detail, with reference to case studies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Segrate, Italy. It is explained how agogic maps take advantage of innovative categories and scripting equipment to provide a new mapping instrument for spatial and urban configurations, highlighting the interdependence between aural signals and spatial variables. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades it has become widely recognized that housing issues have to be placed in a broader framework acknowledging that civil society in the form of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and their allies are increasingly networking and emerging as strong players that cannot easily be overlooked. Some of these networks have crossed local and national boundaries and have jumped political scales. This implies that housing issues have to be looked at from new angles: they can no longer simply be addressed through localized projects, but rather at multiple scales. The current debate is largely limited to statements about the relevance of individual organizations for local housing processes and tends to overlook the innovativeness in terms of re-scaling those processes and of influencing institutional change at various levels by transcending national boundaries. There is a significant lack of a systemic understanding of such globally operating grassroots networks and how they function in the housing process. This book brings together different perspectives on multi-scalar approaches within the housing field and on grassroots’ engagement with formal agencies including local government, higher levels of government and international agencies. By moving away from romanticizing local self-initiatives, it focuses on understanding the emerging potential once local initiatives are interlinked and scaled-up to transnational networks.
