Book Why Industrial Revolution By Passes Africa

Download or read book Why Industrial Revolution By Passes Africa written by Hilary Nwokeabia and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Industrial Revolution By-Passes Africa is a compelling analysis of the complex dimensions of development in Africa. It identifies and explains the failure of innovations and knowledge in Africa to generate industrial revolution in the continent using two main models: the motivation and growth-ladder models. Focusing on the indifference and secrecy among innovators in the continent, the book shows how the endemic indifference and unparalleled secrecy among African innovators hinders the continent from successfully going up a sustainable development ladder. It argues that with private and un-rewarded knowledge bearers innovating in isolation and dieing in the same fashion, the continent has experienced "e;continuous but non-additive innovation system"e; as against "e;continuous and additive innovation system"e;. Written with the general reader in mind, Why Industrial Revolution By-Passes Africa is an important addition to the current discussions on the problems of innovations, technology and industrialisation in Africa.

Book Seaports and Development

Download or read book Seaports and Development written by B. S. Hoyle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, originally published in 1983, demonstrates the importance of seaports in the growth of less-developed countries. The author focuses on the character of port activity within the context of transport systems and regional economic planning. General principles of port development are illustrated by detailed reference to one Third World port group, that of the Indian Ocean coasts of Kenya and Tanzania. The objective is not merely to illustrate the character of one specific group of ports, but to demonstrate methods of analysis and to underline the crucial role of ports in the development process.

Book Port Geography and Hinterland Development Dynamics

Download or read book Port Geography and Hinterland Development Dynamics written by Mina Akhavan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates and discusses the main characteristics of port-city development dynamics with a focus on the fast-growing city-states of the Middle East, which are emerging as key players in logistics and the global supply chain. Maritime ports and the cities hosting them have long fascinated scholars – geographers, economists, architects, urban planners, sociologists etc. – as they become centres of exchange where different social and urban environments meet, at the intersection between land and sea. Given that the current body of literature on the topic is biased – mainly concerning the Western world and East Asian region – with mono-disciplinary tendencies, this book outlines a theoretical basis from a wide range of literature, linking port-city studies, globalization theories and logistics, and adopts a multidisciplinary perspective. The main target audience of the book includes scholars and graduate students in urban studies, spatial planning, urban and regional economics, logistics, geography and transport geography with an interest in studying port geography and the port-city interface, port infrastructure development and port hinterland dynamics; it will also benefit policymakers and urban planners whose work involves these topics.

Book Developmental Integration and Industrialisation in Southern Africa

Download or read book Developmental Integration and Industrialisation in Southern Africa written by Siphumelele Duma and published by UJ Press. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of decolonisation in Africa, regional integration has become one of the most potent defining characteristics of the continent’s quest for industrialisation and sustainable development. It was understood that the individual continental economies could not achieve the requisite level of industrial development to meet their respective development objectives due to the colonial policy of balkanisation, which divided the continent into small, economically unviable units. In 1992, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) adopted developmental integration, an approach to regional integration to engender industrialisation and address the region’s development challenges. This book offers a critical assessment and examination of this approach as to how it has influenced the industrialisation process in Southern Africa. If so, why has it failed to accelerate the region’s industrialisation and structural transformation process? It contributes significantly to cross-cutting development debates on the African continent, particularly in southern Africa. More importantly, in understanding the nexus between developmental integration and industrialisation.

Book excerpt: In 15 papers, economists and development professionals and scholars begin by analyzing general issues relating to industrialization in Africa, including the question of the continent's comparative advantage in industry, the role of small-scale enterprises, and the scope for infant industry promotion. Then they look at evidence for deindustrialization within Africa, comparative industrial performance between African countries and economies outside Africa, the role of regional trade integration, lessons from industrialization in east Asia, and policies of major lending institutions toward industrial loans. Finally, they focus on particular countries, among them Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Cityports Coastal Zones and Regional Change

Download or read book Cityports Coastal Zones and Regional Change written by B. S. Hoyle and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996-08-30 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in the late 20th Century, there remains a complex web of spatial inter-relationships linking port cities and coastal zones. Cityports, Coastal Zones and Regional Change brings together seventeen authors to explore aspects of these inter-relationships. Many of the chapters were first discussed at an intensive British-Italian Seminar held in Venice in 1994 and have subsequently been substantially revised, edited and updated. The essential focus of the book is on the role of port cities in the development and management of the coastal zones within which they are located. There is a strong emphasis on environmental issues, economic diversification and planning. While most of the numerous case studies featured are British or Italian, other areas represented include Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Tropical Africa and North America. An overview of cityports and coastal zones in the context of sustainable development provides a timely and forward looking conclusion, and makes the book ideal for researchers and students of transport geography, urban geography, port studies and coastal zone management worldwide.

Book Trade and Industrial Development in Africa

Download or read book Trade and Industrial Development in Africa written by Theresa Moyo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the perennial challenge that scholars, economists, and politicians have been grappling with since the 1960s. Development, in this book, has been defined in a context that projects it as a multidimensional and complex process which seeks to enhance the human, social, economic and cultural welfare of the people. This book calls for a rethinking of trade and industry for Africas development. It uses data drawn from national development plans and strategies, and trade and industry issues have been prioritized at the continental level, in key policy documents. On the whole Africas industry and trade performance have been poor in spite of national, regional, and continental plans. The contributors to this volume propose some alternative strategies and policies which are necessary for trade and industry to grow and to contribute to the wellbeing of Africas people. It calls for a developmental trade and industry policy which, fundamentally, must be people-centred. African states should invest time, energy and resources to develop policies which will take into consideration African realities. The different contributors are aware that Africa has experienced strong economic growth in the recent past but this growth has largely been due to a strong demand for Africas primary commodity exports. It has also been a result of increases in productivity and domestic investment and remittances from Africans living in the Diaspora. It is important to note that despite this unprecedented growth performance, the impact of trade and industry on development has been limited. The book arguesthat a structural transformation of Africas economies is inevitable if Africa is to achieve the shift from the dominant paradigm of production and export of primary goods. The various contributors to this book agree that there is need to rethink policy and strategy in order to achieve industrial development in Africa. There is no unique solution or answer that can fit all situations as African countries are not the same. While Africa can draw lessons from other regions which have successfully industrialized, this book argues that policies and strategies will have to be adapted to country-specific situations and circumstances.
