Download or read book Ripped torn and cut written by Subcultures Network and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ripped, torn and cut offers a collection of original essays exploring the motivations behind – and the politics within – the multitude of fanzines that emerged in the wake of British punk from 1976. Sniffin’ Glue (1976–77), Mark Perry’s iconic punk fanzine, was but the first of many, paving the way for hundreds of home-made magazines to be cut and pasted in bedrooms across the UK. From these, glimpses into provincial cultures, teenage style wars and formative political ideas may be gleaned. An alternative history, away from the often-condescending glare of London’s media and music industry, can be formulated, drawn from such titles as Ripped & Torn, Brass Lip, City Fun, Vague, Kill Your Pet Puppy, Toxic Grafity, Hungry Beat and Hard as Nails. The first book of its kind, this collection reveals the contested nature of punk’s cultural politics by turning the pages of a vibrant underground press.

Book excerpt: This is a memoir by Stanton Swafford. He begins in Hermosa Beach and Portuguese Bend, California, growing up without a care in the world. I describe my life hopping freight trains in the dead of winter as a college boy and then as a sailor on a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine. There are the thirty-six years of living, playing and exploring Southeast Asia and China - as an undercover intelligence operative, an exporter, travel advisor, and as a jazz musician. At last I return from my life in Bali to live in Redondo Beach, and to write about it.

Download or read book Hypersexual City written by Nicole Kalms and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of feminist architectural scholarship focuses on the enormous task of instating women’s experience of space into spatial praxis. Hypersexual City: The Provocation of Soft-Core Urbanism suggests this attention to women’s invisibility in sociocultural space has overlooked the complex ways in which women already occupy space, albeit mostly as an image or object to be consumed, even purchased. It examines the occupation of urban space through the mediated representation of women’s hypersexualized bodies. A complex transaction proliferates in the commercial urban space of cities; this book seeks to address the cause and consequence of the increasing dominance of gendered representation. It uses architectural case studies and analysis to make visible the sexual politics of architecture and urbanism and, in doing so, reveal the ways that heterosexist culture shapes the spaces, behaviour and relationships formed in neoliberal cities. Hypersexual City announces how examining urbanism that operates through, and is framed by, sexual culture can demonstrate that architecture does not merely find itself adrift in the hypersexualized landscape of contemporary cities, but is actively producing and contributing to the sexual regulation of urban life.
