Download or read book Models and Methods Applicable to Corps of Engineers Urban Studies written by Waterways Experiment Station (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is basically a source book for individuals who are actually concerned with the problem of constructing alternative plans for developing urban areas. It reviews the methods and computer models that are currently available to the planner or engineer for developing water and related land resources. These reviews discuss the availability and usefulness of several models; give a brief technical description of each model, including the input data required; and indicate the amount and type of computer hardware needed to use each model. The report is directed mainly toward water related problems. Thus, most of the methods discussed deal with urban drainage, wastewater management, flood routing, reservoir operation, water supply, flood zoning, and the social and economic aspects associated with these areas. Download or read book Planning Atlanta written by Harley F Etienne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other major U.S. city, Atlanta regularly reinvents itself. From the Civil War’s devastation to the 1996 Olympic boom to the current housing crisis, the city’s history is a cycle of rise and fall, ruin and resurgence. In Planning Atlanta, two dozen planning practitioners and thought leaders bring the story to life. Together they trace the development of projects like Freedom Parkway and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library. They examine the impacts of race relations on planning and policy. They explore Atlanta’s role as a 19th-century rail hub—and as the home of the world’s busiest airport. They probe the city’s economic and environmental growing pains. And they look toward new plans that will shape Atlanta’s next incarnation. Read Planning Atlanta and discover a city where change is always in the wind.

Download or read book Bluegrass Paradise written by Gary A. O'Dell and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the earliest days of the United States as settlers made their way west and into what would eventually become Kentucky, they were faced with many challenges in the task of surveying and claiming new and unknown land. Among the highest priorities for new residents was to determine if their chosen homestead could provide the fertile soil and fresh water they needed to sustain life and service their agricultural needs. Kentucky, with its underlying base of predominantly limestone rock—perfectly suited to the natural formation of caves, sinking streams, and springs of cool water—proved the ideal location on which to build their new lives. In Bluegrass Paradise: Royal Spring and the Birth of Georgetown, Kentucky, author Gary A. O'Dell tells the story of the Royal Spring, the largest spring in central Kentucky. Practical and essential to the creation of a successful settlement, the spring and its location became the primary reason pioneers would eventually congregate here and found the city of Georgetown as one of the earliest Kentucky communities. In the ensuing 250 years, the Royal Spring has faithfully served the water needs of the community and the locale remains a cherished cultural and historical asset that provides greenspace within a rapidly growing city.

Download or read book Mount Tamalpais and the Marin Municipal Water District written by Jack Gibson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mount Tamalpais rose from the land that has become Marin County. As the crown jewel of the Marin Municipal Water District, the mountain and adjoining watersheds total 22,000 acres. These properties sit adjacent to county open space as well as holdings of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Mount Tamalpais State Park. Together, the land provides an unparalleled world-class recreation and wilderness area only 30 minutes from the city of San Francisco. Amidst the upheaval of the Progressive Era, the Water District was chartered in 1912 by citizens of Marin County to create a public water system and to fulfill the promise of a park. Rich with possibility, the land had remained surprisingly undeveloped throughout the 19th century. Surviving the Gold Rush, a notorious period of wanton greed for natural resources, the mountain needed protection. Armed with the power of eminent domain, the Water District started the conversion of the vast watershed areas from private to community ownership, a process that ultimately saved the mountain and left in its formidable shadow the beloved and beautifully preserved natural land of the Mount Tamalpais Watershed.
