Book excerpt: This book discusses urban planning and regional development practices in the twentieth century, and ways in which they are currently being transformed. With the push to adopt a market paradigm in land development and infrastructure, the relationship between resource management, sustainable development and the role of governance has been transformed. Further, attempts are being made to bring planning related decision-making closer to the people who are most affected by it. Book Economic Growth Climate Crisis and Natural Disasters

Download or read book Economic Growth Climate Crisis and Natural Disasters written by Gurinder Kaur and published by IMPRI Impact and Policy Research Institute. This book was released on 2022-04-13 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, almost all countries of the world are facing the scourge of natural disasters caused by global warming. Rising temperature is increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters and the severity of their effects. The increase in the average global temperature has not happened all of a sudden, the real reason for this increase is the pro-capitalist/corporate world economic development model adopted by the governments of different countries. Most of the countries around the world, especially developed countries, have indiscriminately squandered natural resources in a blind race of economic growth. The research articles in this book are an attempt to analyze the global climate crisis, natural disasters, and economic growth. They trace the extent to which human beings have destroyed natural resources such as forests, water, land, and air in the name of economic development. The average temperature of the earth began to rise after the Pre-Industrial Revolution Period. Rapid global warming has caused the world's oldest and most developed countries to be affected by floods, heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires. Every day, one or another region of India is suffering from natural calamities, with the state of Uttarakhand and six states in the Western Ghats being on the brink of ruin. They also explain which countries around the world are now planning to overcome the climate crisis caused by global warming. The time to look at the facts and act on Climate Change is now, if every country takes bold steps for the pressing issues at hand, we can still change the trajectory of where humanity is headed. Everyday small acts by vigilant citizens can look like drops of water, but we should remember many tiny drops can make an ocean, these many small acts can surmount to something bigger. We must put in the time, though, and effort quickly and boldly. Here's to leaving our planet better than how we found it for the future generations to come.

Book Delhi in Transition 1821 and Beyond

Download or read book Delhi in Transition 1821 and Beyond written by Shama Mitra Chenoy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commissioned by the English East India Company to write about contemporary nineteenth-century Delhi, Mirza Sangin Beg walked around the city to capture its highly fascinating urban and suburban extravaganza. Laced with epigraphy and fascinating anecdotes, the city as ‘lived experience’ has an overwhelming presence in his work, Sair-ul Manazil. Interestingly, Beg made no attempt to ‘monumentalize’ buildings; instead, he explored them as spaces reflective of the socio-cultural milieu of the times. Delhi in Transition is the first comprehensive English translation of Beg’s work, which was originally published in Persian. It is the only translation to compare the four known versions of Sair-ul Manazil, including the original manuscript located in Berlin, which is being consulted for the first time. Shama Mitra Chenoy’s exhaustive introduction and extensive notes, along with the use of varied styles in the book to indicate the multiple sources of the text, contextualize Beg’s work for the reader and engage him with the debate concerning the different variants of this unique and eclectic work.

Book The Postcolonial Indian Novel in English

Download or read book The Postcolonial Indian Novel in English written by Geetha Ganapathy-Doré and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian writers of English such as G. V. Desani, Salman Rushdie, Amit Chaudhuri, Amitav Ghosh, Vikram Seth, Allan Sealy, Shashi Tharoor, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Chandra and Jhumpa Lahiri have taken the potentialities of the novel form to new heights. Against the background of the genre’s macro-history, this study attempts to explain the stunning vitality, colourful diversity, and the outstanding but sometimes controversial success of postcolonial Indian novels in the light of ongoing debates in postcolonial studies. It analyses the warp and woof of the novelistic text through a cross-sectional scrutiny of the issues of democracy, the poetics of space, the times of empire, nation and globalization, self-writing in the auto/meta/docu-fictional modes, the musical, pictorial, cinematic and culinary intertextualities that run through this hyperpalimpsestic practice and the politics of gender, caste and language that gives it an inimitable stamp. This concise and readable survey gives us intimations of a truly world literature as imagined by Francophone writers because the postcolonial Indian novel is a concrete illustration of how “language liberated from its exclusive pact with the nation can enter into a dialogue with a vast polyphonic ensemble.”
