Book The Political Economy of Everyday Life in Africa

Download or read book The Political Economy of Everyday Life in Africa written by Wale Adebanwi and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2017 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-disciplinary examination of the role of ordinary African people as agents in the generation and distribution of well-being in modern Africa. What are the fundamental issues, processes, agency and dynamics that shape the political economy of life in modern Africa? In this book, the contributors - experts in anthropology, history, political science, economics, conflict and peace studies, philosophy and language - examine the opportunities and constraints placed on living, livelihoods and sustainable life on the continent. Reflecting on why and how the political economy of life approach is essential for understanding the social process in modern Africa, they engage with the intellectual oeuvre of the influential Africanist economic anthropologist Jane Guyer, who provides an Afterword. The contributors analyse the politicaleconomy of everyday life as it relates to money and currency; migrant labour forces and informal and formal economies; dispossession of land; debt and indebtedness; socio-economic marginality; and the entrenchment of colonial andapartheid pasts. Wale Adebanwi is the Rhodes Professor of Race Relations at the University of Oxford. He is author of Nation as Grand Narrative: The Nigerian Press and the Politics of Meaning (University of Rochester Press).

Book Forms of Wonderment

Download or read book Forms of Wonderment written by Jan-Lodewijk Grootaers and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[Forms of Wonderment: the History and Collections of the Afrika Museum, Berg en Dal] describes how the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal (near Nijmegen in the Netherlands) has developed over the years. It provides the first-ever overview of the museum's rich collections. In the half-century since the museum was founded, there has been a profound shift in Western attitudes to African and other world cultures. This is also true of the artefacts and works of art produced by these cultures. The title refers not only to the objects that are the main subject of this book, but also to t he various forms of wonderment of which they are both the cause and the effect. Many of the African forms shown here reflect man's wonderment at the circumstances and mysteries of his existence, and focus our attention on crucial moments and relationships in human life. Ever since the early twentieth century, these same forms have been a source of wonderment to artists, missionaries, art historians, anthropologists and art-lovers in the West--wonderment which often merges into admiration. The purpose of [these books] is to increase that admiration by familiarising readers with the artists' idioms and explaining the purposes and meanings of the objects they made." --back cover(s)

Download or read book The G l d Spectacle written by Babatunde Lawal and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable study explores the use of the visual and performing arts to promote nonviolence and social harmony in sub-Saharan Africa. It focuses on Gelede, a popular community festival of masquerade, dance, and song, held several times a year by the Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. Babatunde Lawal, an art historian and African scholar who has taught in Nigeria, Brazil, and the United States, is himself a Yoruba and has taken an active part in Gelede. He writes from the perspective of an informed participant/observer of his own culture. Lawal bases his book on extensive field research--observations and interviews--conducted over more than two decades as well as on numerous published and unpublished scholarly sources. He casts significant new light on many previously obscure aspects of Gelede, and he demonstrates a useful methodological approach to the study of non-Western art. The book systematically covers the major aspects of the Gelede spectacle, presenting its cultural background and historical origins as preface to a vivid and detailed description of an actual performance. This is followed by a discussion of the iconography and aesthetics of costume, and an examination of the sculpted images on the masks. The book concludes with a discussion of the moral and aesthetic philosophy of Gelede and its responsiveness to technological and social change. The Gelede Spectacle is illustrated in color and black-and-white with over 100 field and museum photographs, including a rare sequence on the dressing of a masquerader. It offers, in addition, more than 60 Gelede song texts, proverbs, and divination verses, each in the original Yoruba as well as in translation. Lawal's interpretations of these pieces indicate the rich complexities of metaphor and analogy inherent in the Yoruba language and art.
