Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the work life of mayors, city managers, and other top executives in city government. Based on a survey of 527 city executives and enlivened with numerous anecdotes, the book documents time allocation patterns and work routines. City Executives makes comparisons with previous studies to show how city executives compare with managers in other types of organizations. The authors also note how city managers' role has changed over a 20-year period. City executives are shown to be like their private-sector counterparts. For example, they function at a relentless pace, are frequently interrupted in their work, and are generally overburdened. However, because city workers operate in an environment open to public scrutiny, they are left with only a minority of their professional time to attend to matters that they describe as priorities. Instead, they must constantly respond to intergovernmental demands, emergencies, and the needs of citizens and legislative officials.

Book excerpt: Religious thinkers have overlooked an important truth: God's act of creation is interpersonal and immediately causes only perfect creatures with perfect freedom to respond. Uniquely integrating and deepening what traditional theists have always believed, the author relates the untold story of freedom in creation. Particular attention is given to the unconscious dimension of the mind and to its roots in the spiritual. The book highlights the infinite freedom of God and the perfect finite freedom of all persons within the Creator's activity. Awakening to God's gift of two different, but intimately related creations...absolute (out of nothing) and redemptive (out of something)...twenty-first century believers are offered a momentous opportunity for humility and joy. Readers are given a whole new vista for understanding suffering and love.

Book Leadership and the City

Download or read book Leadership and the City written by Markku Sotarauta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century has been dominated by an almost compulsive race to find new pathways for city development. As cities seek to regenerate via the knowledge-based economy, now more than ever dynamic leadership is required order to navigate new and complex challenges while building community. This book is about generative leadership in knowledge city development. Leadership and the City is rooted in a conviction that the leadership in a city is crucial in order for it to adjust strategically to major transformations and thus secure a good future for its inhabitants. The book opens a fresh view of leadership by focusing on generative leaders and their modes of leading, instead of spatial categorisations, governance structures and/or policy contents and processes. It investigates generative leadership by elaborating the modes of leadership, power and strategies in influence networks. The key points are highlighted with several empirical cases. These include Akron and Rochester (USA), Münich (Germany), Leeds (UK), Barcelona (Spain) as well as Helsinki, Tampere and Seinäjoki (Finland). This book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners concerned with Leadership, Urban Studies and Strategic Management.
