Book excerpt: From the second half of the 1940s, when postwar reconstruction began in Italy, there were three notable driving forces of environmental change: the uncontrollable process of urban drift, fueled by considerable migratory flows from the countryside and southern regions toward the cities where large-scale productive activities were beginning to amass; unruly industrial development, which was tolerated since it was seen as the necessary tribute to be paid to progress and modernization; and mass consumption. In his fourth book, Federico Paolini presents a series of essays ranging from the uses of natural resources, to environmental problems caused by means of transport, to issues concerning environmental politics and the dynamics of the environment movement. Paolini concludes the book with a forecast about the environmental problems that will emerge in the public debate of the twenty-first century.

On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

The Italian architect, historian, and restorer Gustavo Giovannoni (1873–1947) was a key figure in the fields of architecture, urbanism, and conservation during the first half of the twentieth century. A traditionalist largely neglected by the proponents of modernist architecture following World War II, he remains little known internationally. His writings, however, until now unavailable in English, represent a significant step toward the full appreciation of the historic city and are directly relevant today to the protection of urban historic resources worldwide. This abundantly illustrated critical anthology is a representative sample of Giovannoni’s seminal texts related to the appreciation, understanding, and planning of historic cities. The thirty readings, which appear with their original illustrations, are grouped into six parts organized around key concepts in Giovannoni’s conservation theory—urban building, respect for the setting or context, a thinning out of the urban fabric, conservation and restoration treatments, the grafting of the new upon the old, and reconstruction. I tradizionali manuali di storia della pedagogia, da questo punto di vista, segnano il passo, poiché concepiscono la storia educativa sostanzialmente come storia delle idee e del pensiero dei grandi Autori e Ideologi del passato, non tanto come storia di fatti ed eventi educativo-formativi che hanno segnato realmente i passaggi epocali della trasmissione dei saperi, delle pratiche, dell’identità stessa. Ma la ricerca contemporanea nasce ancora da quella storica, dove lo studio delle esperienze socio-educative fondamentali dell'uomo o la storia della mentalità formativa sono inevitabilmente fonte di esperienza per costruire o ricostruire le azioni formative del presente. A partire dalla modernità, gli orientamenti formativi ratificano un’esigenza percepita diffusamente, di responsabilità (umanesimo metodologico: Barocco, Scienza Nuova, Illuminismo) e di intenzionalità formative (umanesimo storico e dialettico: Romanticismo e movimenti dell’Ottocento e Primo Novecento), di valorizzazione delle potenzialità del singolo, che rifiuta le forme di omologazione e standardizzazione di pensiero e atteggiamenti che frammentano e impoveriscono la condizione esistenziale degli individui. Lanciando uno sguardo al futuro sulla base del passato la ricerca storico-educativa si conclude con la proposta di un framework dinamico dell’eco-identità inteso come contributo per elaborare un nuovo progetto di uomo per la formazione contemporanea.
