This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter on the Rebellion, to a Citizen of Washington, From a Citizen of Philadelphia The following Letter was written, five months ago, in the course of a friendly and familiar correspondence with a prominent and very estimable citizen of Washington. In addition to the subjoined note from Mr. Yaux, the writer was requested, and even urged, to publish the Letter, some time since, the gentleman to whom it was addressed giving his consent. But he did not think it could add anything to all that had been so much better said and written by others, on the same great subject, and refrained from publishing it. He has determined now to let it go for what it may be worth. The interval that has elapsed since the Letter was written, may at least serve to show that the writer has evinced no anxiety, and been in no hurry, to get into print. Though the first part about the "Trent" be not applicable at this moment, the writer feels as much confidence now, as he did then, in the soundness of the sentiments, and in publishing the Letter, prefers to publish it entire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Course of Study in Civics: Grades One to Six, for the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is the purpose of the course in civics in the first grade to lay the foundation of good citizenship by devel oping ih the child some of the fundamental civic virtues. The work in this grade is, therefore, primarily training in morals and manners. There are three conditions necessary to the develop ment of right moral conduct. The child must know what is right; he must desire to do it; but, most important of all, he must be trained, through constant practice, in the formation of goo-d habits. The knowledge of the right and the emotional basis for future action may be given by means of story, poem, song, memory gem, games, dramatization and other class or group exercises. In such instruction, care should be taken to avoid pointing the moral, as to do so is likely to Spoil the emotional reaction desired. While this instruo tion will constitute a very small part of the day's work, the doing side or practical application will be constant. In the main, the teacher's method should be one of securing results by commendation rather than by censure. Book Makers of Philadelphia

Download or read book Makers of Philadelphia written by Charles Morris and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of Philadelphia: An Historical Work; Giving Portraits and Sketches of the Most Eminent Citizens of Philadelphia From the Time of William Penn to the Present Day The history of a city is, to a very considerable extent, the history of the men who, by their energy, ability, and public spirit, have made it what it is; the men to whose well-directed efforts is due the development of its municipal institutions, industrial interests, and standing in public estimation. This may be particularly said of Philadelphia, which has been the nursery of a succession of able and patriotic citizens, whose influence has been steadily felt in the growth of its civic institutions, while many of them have won a reputation that extends throughout the civilized world. These men have been, in the fullest sense, the "Makers of Philadelphia," and deserve all the honor that can be given them by placing on record their careers. To them the city owes its origin and its prosperity, and it is due to them that the story of their lives and doings shall be preserved for future generations of Philadelphians to read and take example from. In this work are included biographical sketches of the Philadelphians who have been most eminent in commercial and mercantile business, and those whose professional, legislative, and scientific careers have been most marked and valuable. Among them are included great doctors, jurists, theologians, statesmen, authors, scientists, soldiers, merchants, and manufacturers; men who played a leading part in colonial days, who lived through the stirring epoch of the city, who fought for the Union in the Civil War, and who, during the recent period of rapid municipal improvement and manufacturing and commercial development, were the men who gave this city its prominent position among the leading cities of the world. To all those who take pride in the record of the good city of Brotherly Love the work here offered is, in an ample sense, a history of that city, since it is the history of the men who, during the years of its growth, were its leading and inspiring spirits, and of those who to-day are actively engaged in laying for it the foundations of a marked and memorable future.
