Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizenship Dramatized a Bit of Brightening for the Study, of Civil Government He who learns from practice as well as precept, has ever been the most firmly grounded in knowledge; and it is equally true that he to whom study is play, has ever been the most apt pupil. Recognizing the fact that the study of government is becoming of major importance to a vast number of American women, and that increasing emphasis is being put on it in American schools, the authors of this little book have endeavored to present the essential facts of citizenship through a series of demonstrations or plays that will instruct and at the same time entertain. They are far from claiming to have given here an exhaustive compilation of facts on citizenship. Rather they have attempted to excite the curiosity of the individual pupil and thus lead him to investigate the subject himself. With this in mind it is urged that those who take part in the following demonstrations visit the legislative sessions and political gatherings in or near their own communities whenever possible. This will enable them to make the performance realistic, and furthermore, as methods of government procedure differ in different localities, it will help to make each demonstration locally accurate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Citizen and the Republic: A d104-Book in Government His volume is intended as a text - book for use in courses in Civil Government in secondary schools. It should (6 follow, or accompany, a high school course in American History. It is an attempt to answer the demand for that if Which is needful and important in the new civics some times called community civics, and at the same time to hold fast to that Which is good in the old. S, In introducing an educational reform there is always Q danger of over - emphasis; there is danger that we may not ?%have a good thing Without having too much of it. The '9 authors of this volume, While emphasizing community civics and the moral purposes in teaching government, have sought to avoid a one - sided course. They believe that the schools should study the community and such new civics as the changing times call for, and especially that they should give attention to current history and present day problems of democracy; but it is equally important not 3 to neglect certain aspects of the old established order. It may be well to set pupils to the laboratory method of studying the g actual life of our city communities, how milk and water are g supplied, how food is distributed, how public health is pre ss served, how the streets are kept clean (or dirty), how the taxes are raised and used, and how the schools are sustained. But to limit a high school coursein civics to such a field of study is to commit a great wrong to young people Who are under training for citizenship. The mere stimulation of interest in public affairs may even be dangerous unless it is under proper guidance Uninformed public Spirit may, in Harrington's phrase, Spit fire and blow up castles whereas the same impulse based on adequate knowledge is more likely to lead to constructive reform. Book The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship Classic Reprint written by Westel Woodbury Willoughby and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship The purpose of the present work is to present to American youths practical information as to the rights and duties which attach to American citizenship. In the effort to do this in the clearest and most logical form, the stereotyped method of giving a running commentary upon the Constitution has been discarded. Of all political forms, the federal type is the most complex; and it is, therefore, little short of absurd to attempt, as do so many text-books on Civics, to explain to students who are without previous training the constitutional relations of our elaborate system of national, state, and local governments, without first giving to them a knowledge of the nature of political authority, the purposes for which it exists, and the general governmental means through which such purposes are attained. In the present work it is believed that this error has been avoided. The student is first given that information which is essential to an understanding of citizenship and government in general, before he is called upon to study the description of our own complex government in particular. This book is therefore divided into two parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Citizen: A Study of the Individual and the Government It is commonly supposed by those who have to do with young people that they cannot be brought to understand large matters relating to the management of public affairs, which are cared for by our government in its various forms of town, county, state, and national authorities. My own belief, based on many years' experience as a teacher, leads me to the conviction that this view is quite mistaken: that so far from being unfitted to deal with such questions, young men and women are naturally interested in knowing those things which pertain to their duties in the wide field of life upon which they are entering. Therefore it is with some confidence that I have determined to set forth in the following pages the leading facts concerning the relations of the citizens of this country - men and women alike - to the systems of the society and the government in which we all have to play our part. Large as are the questions which have to be dealt with, they are made the easier to understand by the fact that they are ever before us, as part of our life. The aim of this book is to set before the reader the relation which the individual bears to the government which controls his conduct as a citizen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Citizenship IN view of the large number of textbooks on civics already available, some very decided reasons should be forthcoming from those who venture to add another one to the long list. Our first plea in justification of this volume is our belief that the books on government now offered to the schools have cer tain fundamental defects. Book The Rights and Duties of Citizens of the United States

Download or read book The Rights and Duties of Citizens of the United States written by Edward C. Mann and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rights and Duties of Citizens, of the United States: A Manual of Citizenship The scholars in our public schools and colleges should be instructed as to the elements that go to make up a good and useful citizen of our country, and the obligations, civil, social, and political, due to others from them. They should be instructed to yield respect and obedience to the laws, and to hold on with unflinching firmness to the Constitution and the Union of States. They should be taught the love of liberty and order, to walk in the path of patriotism, of fidelity to our country, and of duty to God. This is necessary in order that when they become of adult age they may be prepared to exhibit wisdom in the cabinet; the purest patriotism; the highest integrity, public and private; morals without a stain; and religious feelings without intolerance and without extravagance. In this little manual of the rights and duties of citizenship I sing the love of country and the pride of country to the youth of both sexes of my country. I teach the need of beating back ones country's enemies, whether they reside in or out of the United States - a most true song, to which I hope the hearts of the youth of our country will burst responsive into fiery melody, followed by fiery strokes before long. Book Everyday Citizenship Classic Reprint

Download or read book Everyday Citizenship Classic Reprint written by Frederick F. Blachly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Citizenship This book is an attempt to make it clear to young people that the privileges and duties of citizenship are matters of everyday life. Its object is to lead them to see government, not as a remote, incomprehensible, and rather alarming abstraction, but as a controllable agency for the service of all citizens. The organization and structure of government have here been treated with constant reference to their purpose, the carrying on of common enterprises. The young citizen is rightly interested in the work done by public officials, and in his own share in public work, rather than in the machinery itself. An appeal is made to the student's interest by the use of many illustrations based on everyday experience. The arrangement of topics, beginning with local government and proceeding to the less familiar work and organization of state and nation, is designed to lead him logically from the known to the less known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizenship: A Book for Classes in Government and Law In these times when so many are proclaiming that civil government is a burden which ought not to be borne, we cannot too carefully study the basis on which the whole structure of government and law must rest. This little book is designed as a help to such study. I have, therefore, not confined myself in it to the rights and duties of citizens as defined by statutes, though the larger part of the book is given up to these; but I have sought for a broader view of citizenship as shown by the fundamental principles of society and by the deep groundwork of the human life itself. I do not think the profoundest considerations out of place in an elementary text-book, for even if they arc not at first apprehended in their full significance, their light should not be entirely obscured at the outset, and should become more and more apparent as study and years increase. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizenship of the United States These laws, substantially the statutes enacted more than a hundred years ago when our population was less than four millions, and when it was the policy of our government to invite immigration, were ill adapted to our modern conditions, with a population of eighty mil lions and an influx of foreigners of more than a million annually. Under these laws lax and unsatisfactory methods of naturalization had grown up, opening the way to gross frauds against our citizenship, including perjury, false impersonation, and traffic in false and counterfeit certificates of citizenship. Such certificates were sometimes sold to alien criminals to secure their ad mission to the United States, and frequently to procure protection against their home governments. Cases have actually occurred where aliens have landed on our shores for the first time, having in their possession certificates entitling them to the full rights of American citizenship.
