Book Common Sense

Download or read book Common Sense written by Stephen R Cafaro and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common Sense - Revisited in the New Millennium, is an updated version of Thomas Paine's ground-breaking work. The book develops comparisons between the social, economic and political injustices of 21st century America and the circumstances of 1776 which led to the American Revolution. The similarities of the two periods include analyses of democratic representation, economic disparity and national identity. The conclusions indicate America needs another revolution in order for her citizens to, once again, take control of their government. Modern day Americans are faced with conditions mush like our colonial ancestors in that reconciliation with a corrupted government is no longer possible! America can and must do better. The final chapter contains some fundamental reforms which can be instrumental in restoring America to a government of the people, by the people and for the people!

Book excerpt: Common Sense Revisited is an effort to reflect on the government created by the founding fathers as it has come to exist in our world today. In reality the author does not see any resemblance at all. Using the simple process of identifying the provisions of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, the author demonstrates how the government today rejects them completely at will. This analogy is best demonstrated in exposing certain myths about out government that have served to hide government perfidy. We are not "a nation of laws" as the government so often proclaims. One need only understand that the Constitution set out laws to govern the government of this nation. Yet, the government does not abide these rules. Thus if the government does not obey the laws that govern it, it is totally unreal to expect the people to be governed by illegal laws made by that government. We, the people, must make the government obey the laws so that we may live in the security that this nation was intended to provide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-four decades ago Thomas Paine's Common Sense proposed a bold solution to colonists struggling with an uneasy relation with Great Britain: independence, and he offered simple arguments and clear thinking. Today the United States faces the dangers of violence and terrorism and political dysfunction which seems to defy solution. Common Sense II is a nonpartisan reassessment by an independent thinker. The author argues that terrorism is too big of a problem for police and government and the military to handle, but that it is a problem for citizens, and he argues that the relation of citizenship itself must be restored to require active participation at the local level. He recasts terrorism as violence against individual rights, an expanded problem with three possible violators: our own government, foreign terrorists, and criminals. An argument is made that all three types must be prevented since measures to fight or prevent only one type can aggravate the other two types. While he discusses basic methods for fighting terrorism, he argues that prevention is key. The principle behind a prevention strategy is what he terms 'light' in the sense of transparency and openness and accountability and identified movement in public, and he describes prevention strategies built around this concept while strengthening privacy. He argues why the current system of government is flawed, and he offers a revamped nonpartisan constitution as a replacement.

Book American Citizenship and Constitutionalism in Principle and Practice

Download or read book American Citizenship and Constitutionalism in Principle and Practice written by Steven F. Pittz and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions at the very heart of the American experiment—about what the nation is and who its people are—have lately assumed a new, even violent urgency. As the most fundamental aspects of American citizenship and constitutionalism come under ever more powerful pressure, and as the nation’s politics increasingly give way to divisive, partisan extremes, this book responds to the critical political challenge of our time: the need to return to some conception of shared principles as a basis for citizenship and a foundation for orderly governance. In various ways and from various perspectives, this volume’s authors locate these principles in the American practice of citizenship and constitutionalism. Chapters in the book’s first part address critical questions about the nature of U.S. citizenship; subsequent essays propose a rethinking of traditional notions of citizenship in light of the new challenges facing the country. With historical and theoretical insights drawn from a variety of sources—ranging from Montesquieu, John Adams, and Henry Clay to the transcendentalists, Cherokee freedmen, and modern identitarians—American Citizenship and Constitutionalism in Principle and Practice makes the case that American constitutionalism, as shaped by several centuries of experience, can ground a shared notion of American citizenship. To achieve widespread agreement in our fractured polity, this notion may have to be based on “thin” political principles, the authors concede; yet this does not rule out the possibility of political community. By articulating notions of citizenship and constitutionalism that are both achievable and capable of fostering solidarity and a common sense of purpose, this timely volume drafts a blueprint for the building of a genuinely shared political future.

Book excerpt: - Thomas PAINE, born in 1737 in Britain and died in 1809 in the United States, is a famous intellectual, pamphleteer and revolutionary. During his life, he had the British, American and French nationalities. In 1774, he moved to America at the invitation of the American politician, Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), met in London. He is known for his commitment during the American Revolution to the independence of the British presence in North America. He was a staunch defender of the republic and individual freedoms. Likewise, he had defended the cause of black Americans. In 1776, he published his pamphlet "Common Sense." This work was successful. This publication preceded the signing of the American Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776. The first president of the United States, George Washington (1732-1799), as commander of the Continental Army, ordered the reading of Thomas Paine's pamphlets to the soldiers to give them courage. The writings of Thomas Paine and his stances in favor of independence, were welcomed by the American political world, especially George Washington and John Adams. The latter was vice-president from 1789 to 1797, then president of the Union from 1797 to 1801. It is one of the founding fathers of the United States of America. Thomas Paine was the friend and advisor of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). He was Secretary of State from 1790 to 1793, Vice President from 1797 to 1801, and President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. From 1792 to 1802, he lived in France and participated in the French Revolution. He even had French citizenship and was elected deputy to the French National Assembly. As such and in 1797, he presented in France his project of the minimum income and free public education. At 72, Thomas Paine died of poverty in the United States. - COMMON SENSE was published in 1776 to encourage the American Revolution and the beginnings of the American nation. It was a success. This pamphlet is an attack and a tirade against the British presence in North America. Political figures George Washington, Benjamin Rush, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Edison were among the adherents to the theses of this book. Common Sense proposes the outline of the constitution of the United States by getting rid of the monarchical idea of divine right. There is also a historical summary of the British monarchy. This book proposes a method of election by ballot to elect the president and the congress.

Book The Politics of Common Sense

Download or read book The Politics of Common Sense written by Deva R. Woodly and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way that movements communicate with the general public matters for their chances of lasting success. Deva Woodly argues that the potential for movement-led political change is significantly rooted in mainstream democratic discourse and specifically in the political acceptance of new issues by news media, the general public, and elected officials. This is true to some extent for any group wishing to alter status quo distributions of rights and/or resources, but is especially important for grassroots challengers who do not already have a place of legitimated influence in the polity. By examining the talk of two contemporary movements, the living wage and marriage equality, during the critical decade after their emergence between 1994-2004, Woodly shows that while the living wage movement experienced over 120 policy victories and the marriage equality movement suffered many policy defeats, the overall impact that marriage equality had on changing American politics was much greater than that of the living wage because of its deliberate effort to change mainstream political discourse, and thus, the public understanding of the politics surrounding the issue.
