Book European Citizens Initiative A Tool for Engagement and Active Citizenship

Download or read book European Citizens Initiative A Tool for Engagement and Active Citizenship written by Yilly Vanessa Pacheco and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2023 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication gathers contributions to understand better and further develop the European Citizens’ Initiative. This participatory and agenda-setting tool introduced into the Treaty of Lisbon has not yet reached its full potential of citizen engagement, nor has it driven the significant policy changes initially expected. Bearing this in mind, the project ECI: From A to Z aimed to promote the knowledge and use of the European Citizens’ Initiative within the higher education arena by engaging investigators and students from four different Universities (University of Coimbra; Georg-August University of Göttingen; Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi and the University of Vigo) to work together to share their concerns and common views on the European Union role and policies. This publication describes the methodology followed and results reached under the project, but more than that, it is a practical toolkit for all who wish to know more about the European Citizens’ Initiative and how to put it in motion.

Book The Next Big Thing

Download or read book The Next Big Thing written by Johannes W. Pichler and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 2009, Europe was given a new "constitution" with the Lisbon Treaty. Now, two years later, one of the key innovations of this new treaty, the European Citizens' Initiative, is about to become fully operational. For the very first time in world history, citizens across national borders will be able to determine the common political agenda by way of a transnational direct democratic procedure. Yet, after the agreement of the EU institutions just before Christmas 2010, a considerable amount of preparatory work still has to be done before the first European Citizens' Initiatives can be launched and registered. This collection consists of, among other things, the implementation of the new EU regulation into national law, as Member States will be responsible for electronic signature gathering systems in their territories and for the verification of signatures given by their citizens. Also, much instructional and informational work is about to begin in order to clearly communicate the options and limitations of the new participative procedure. Finally, a genuine pan-European and democratic infrastructure of support has to be established in order to insure that the new instrument is a tool for everyone. Making Europe ready for the next big thing, the Citizens' Initiative is clearly described and explained through the contributions found in this book.

Book Guide to the European Citizens Initiative

Download or read book Guide to the European Citizens Initiative written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making the European Union more democratic and transparent is one of the priorities of the Juncker Commission. It is against this background that the European citizens' initiative is particularly important since it gives them the opportunity to express their concerns in a very concrete way and to influence the European political and legislative agenda. On 31 March 2015, the Commission published its first report on the implementation of this instrument. After only 3 years of existence, the facts show the interest of the general public for the citizens' initiative. In particular, about 6 million citizens have already made use of their new right, and three initiatives have managed to gather more than 1 million signatures. However, we are aware that some aspects can still be improved, and we have started a reflection on possible options for improving the tool and have the intention of involving all relevant stakeholders in this exercise.

Book The European Citizens Initiative

Download or read book The European Citizens Initiative written by Johannes W. Pichler and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the European Citizens' Initiative (Article 11.4. in the new Lisbon Treaty of the European Union), the region enters new territory for modern democracy. For the first time, the principle of representative democracy, based on both indirect and direct democracy, will become a political practice on the transnational level. However, such a historic step, which is closely watched by observers from across the globe, raises many questions regarding the future provisions (implementation and regulation), the opportunities (the attitude by EU institutions and citizens groups alike), and the infrastructure (the support and assistance arrangements). This book offers an entry point into the new and exciting democratic territory of the European Citizens' Initiative, and it outlines the cornerstones and key features of both the procedure to be adapted by the EU in 2010 and the future use of the new tool from 2011.

Book Is Europe Listening to Us

Download or read book Is Europe Listening to Us written by Raphaël Kies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the European Union engage and connect with the people it aims to represent? What initiatives and schemes have been used to engage EU citizens? To what extent can such procedures be considered a move forward towards a more participative and democratic Europe? This collection of internationally recognised specialists in European integration and innovative democratic practices seek to answer these key questions, explore European citizens’ thoughts and opinions about the EU and evaluate the governing elite’s attempts to engage with the public. It offers critical analysis of EU justifications and strategies for implementing Deliberative Citizens Involvement Projects and focuses on some of the major participative experiences trialled and implemented by EU institutions. By comparing these different attempts to increase and bolster the participation of EU citizens and evaluating their impact the book offers valuable and original material on the civic involvement of EU citizens and the legitimacy of the EU decision making process.

Book Direct Democracy in the EU

Download or read book Direct Democracy in the EU written by Steven Blockmans and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is grappling with a democracy problem. The succession of crises which have plagued the increasingly executive EU for years, has led to a rising cacophony of voices calling for fundamental change to the integration project. Yet despite the seismic shock of the Brexit referendum and the electoral upsets by nativist parties across the continent, few of the plans for EU reform include concrete proposals to reduce the age-old democratic deficit. This book is concerned with the two-pronged question of how the relationship between citizens, the state and EU institutions has changed, and how direct democratic participation can be improved in a multi-layered Union. As such, this edited volume focuses not on populism per se, nor does it deeply engage with policy and output legitimacy. Rather, the research is concerned with process and polity. Building on the notion of increasing social, economic and political interdependence across borders, this volume asks how a sense of solidarity and European identity can be rescued from the bottom up by politically empowering citizens to ‘take back control’ of their EU.

Book The Changing Role of Citizens in EU Democratic Governance

Download or read book The Changing Role of Citizens in EU Democratic Governance written by Davor Jancic and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection discusses the challenges of reforming EU democracy through increased citizen participation beyond elections. It asks fundamental questions such as whether the institutionalisation of citizens in EU public law is a prerequisite for addressing these challenges and the extent to which such institutionalisation is taking place in the EU. To these ends, the contributors analyse the latest institutional initiatives, proposals and practices such as: *citizen assemblies; *citizen consultations and dialogues on European integration and draft legislation; *the Conference on the Future of Europe; *the reform of the European Citizens' Initiative; *the evolving role of the European Ombudsman; *citizen petitions to the European Parliament; *the roles of the civil society and the European Economic and Social Committee. Offering reflections on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, this book is a much needed reminder of the importance of the role of citizens in EU governance.

Book excerpt: In this work Moritz Jesse analyses the legal framework within which inclusion of immigrants into the receiving societies can take place. The inclusion of immigrants cannot be enforced by law. However, legislation must provide the room within which integration can take place legally. By studying residence titles, procedures and other sources in a comparative and critical way, Jesse wants to discover whether the legal potential for integration in the EU and the three Member States is sufficient for the inclusion of immigrants.

Book excerpt: In this book, Tuuli Lähdesmäki, Katja Mäkinen, Viktorija L. A. Čeginskas, and Sigrid Kaasik-Krogerus scrutinize how people who participate in cultural initiatives funded and governed by the European Union understand the idea of Europe. The book focuses on three cultural initiatives: the European Capital of Culture, the European Heritage Label, and a European Citizen Campus project funded through the Creative Europe programme. These initiatives are examined through field studies conducted in 12 countries between 2010 and 2018. The authors describe their approach as ‘ethnography of Europeanization’ and conceptualize the attempts at Europeanization in the European Union’s cultural policy as politics of belonging.
