Download or read book State Power Crime written by Roy Coleman and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ′Following the outstanding introduction by the authors there are fifteen excellent original articles devoted to an integrated theory of the relationship between the state and crime. This work is on the cutting edge of critical criminology. It is a must read.′ - William J. Chambliss, Professor of Sociology, The George Washington University, USA. ′This book is a superb compilation of original papers by an impressive roster of authors. While the articles cover a wide range of empirical issues, from Northern Ireland and corporate crime to youth crime and heterosexual hegemony they all explore the implications, strategies and mechanisms of state power. There isn′t a weak paper here: all are extensively documented, well written, persuasive and scholarly in the very best sense.′ - Professor Laureen Snider, Queens University, Canada ′State, Power, Crime is a hugely important book for these times. Bringing together some of the most original minds in criminology it offers a critical analysis of the state, how it constructs crime, responds to it and, at times, engages in the very same. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in justice, freedom and equality.′ - Paddy Rawlinson, London School of Economics Featuring contributions by many of the leading scholars in the field, this seminal text explores the key themes and debates on state power today, in relation to crime and social order. It critically evaluates a range of substantive areas of criminological concern, including terrorism, surveillance, violence and the media. State, Power, Crime provides: "historical overviews of key theories about state power " assessment of the relationship between crime, criminal justice and the state " analysis of the development of law and order policy " discussion of the impact of structural fissures such as gender, race and sexuality " an overview of current research and writing " critical reflection on the future direction of research and analysis " advice on further reading. In 1978, with the publication of Hall et al′s Policing the Crisis and Poulantzas′s State, Power, Socialism, the complexity of the state′s interventions in maintaining a capitalist social order were laid bare for critical criminological analysis. State, Power, Crime offers an up-to-date and comprehensive examination of the challenges posed by state power, in relation to both criminal and social justice.

Download or read book Economic Migration to the EU written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005-11-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Commission published a Green Paper ("An EU approach to managing economic migration") in January 2005, setting out proposals for a common EU policy for the admission of immigrants for employment and migrant workers' rights. In light of this consultation paper, the Committee's report examines the issue of economic migration to the EU and the level at which it should be regulated, and discusses whether Member States should retain the freedom to decide on issues of economic migration independently of each other. The report is mostly concerned with migration into the EU, but also looks at some aspects of intra-EU movement; it does not consider illegal immigration or asylum issues. Issues discussed include: wider economic issues, the impact of globalisation, EU enlargement, options for control of migrant workers, the UK's position on the Commission's Green Paper, the case for a common EU policy, and the rights of migrant workers.

This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2004, the fifth enlargement of the European Union saw the accession of eight Central and Eastern European states (the 'A8' countries of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia), with Cyprus and Malta joining at the same time. This was the largest expansion in the EU's history, adding ten member states and 75 million people. In January 2007, the accession of Bulgaria and Romania (the 'A2' countries) added a further 30 million people. The Committee's report examines the impact on UK business of the accession of the 'A8' and 'A2' countries, following on from two previous inquiries ("Industrial and Trade Relations with Central Europe", HCP 893, session 1997-98, (ISBN 9780105550785); and "Industrial and Trade Relations with the Baltic States", HCP 835, session 1999-2000 (ISBN 9780102524000)). The Committee's report concludes that the EU accession of these countries has been beneficial to the UK economy and business, chiefly through the plugging of gaps in the UK labour market as well as through increased opportunities for exports and investment. However, these benefits could be greater if businesses were better informed about the resulting opportunities, and the Government should consider what it can do to reduce the 'fear factor' of investing outside UK businesses' comfort zones, particularly in the new member states which are accessible to small and medium-sized companies. The Committee also highlights the importance of improving the skills base of the domestic workforce if UK business wishes to remain globally competitive.
Download or read book Managing Diversity and Equality in Construction written by Andrew W. Gale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-07-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With women in the UK construction industry constituting just thirteen per cent of the workforce and black and Asian workers numbering less that two per cent, despite representing more than six per cent of the working population, diversity is a problem that the construction industry needs to tackle directly. In this title, diversity management is presented as an opportunity for the construction industry. Work is presented from several different countries and regions, in North America, Australia and Europe to provide a comprehensive picture of this complex and often sensitive issue. Going beyond the traditional topics of gender and racial discrimination contributions encompass a wide range of diversity issues facing the construction industry, including sexual orientation, disability and the work-life balance. Essential reading for construction managers and a valuable resource for post-graduate researchers, this key title provides not only a thorough exposition of contemporary research but also supplies the practical diagnostic tools, and techniques to successfully manage diversity in construction and the information to adhere to the law.
Download or read book Collaborative Relationships in Construction written by Hedley Smyth and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-01-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book collects the latest research on both contractual andconceptual collaborative practices in construction. It identifiescommon problems faced by the industry and draws out practicalimplications. Construction projects are increasingly run in ways thatundermine the traditional boundary of the firm and sometimes alsothe definition of the project coalition. This poses challenges forconstruction firms whose clients demand ever increasing performanceimprovements as well as those firms who want to improve theirstrategies for greater collaboration to give themselves competitiveadvantage. The editors identify three main themes: collaborativerelationships, operating both in frameworks and within networks ofcontacts, e.g. relational contracting in partnering, supply chainmanagement and other procurement-driven initiatives. The second theme is frameworks, both contractual frameworksbinding parties together over a series of contracts, and conceptualframeworks used to develop future performance improvement arisingfrom the proactive strategies of firms. The third theme is the network of relationships that supportsindividuals and firms within the project coalition in deliveringservices and adding value to improve performance. These networksdefine the investment and incentives supporting the inter-firm andintra-firm relationships, as well as the formal contractualconditions through which such incentives flow. Networks ofinformation exchange define the structure of the activity and helppredict organisational configurations for successful projectoutcomes.
