Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1 April 1875 - 10 February 1932) was an English writer. He joined the army at age 21 and was a war correspondent during the Second Boer War, for Reuters and the Daily Mail. Struggling with debt, he left South Africa, returned to London, and began writing thrillers to raise income, publishing books including The Four Just Men (1905). Drawing on his time as a reporter in the Congo, covering the Belgian atrocities, Wallace serialised short stories in magazines such as The Windsor Magazine and later published collections such as Sanders of the River (1911). In 1931 he moved to Hollywood, where he worked as a script writer for RKO. He died suddenly from undiagnosed diabetes, during the initial drafting of King Kong (1933). Wallace was such a prolific writer that one of his publishers claimed that a quarter of all books in England were written by him.

Book The Rev Herbert H Hayden An Autobiography

Download or read book The Rev Herbert H Hayden An Autobiography written by Herbert H. Hayden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rev. Herbert H. Hayden; An Autobiography: The Mary Stannard Murder; Tried on Circumstantial Evidence HE trial of the Rev. Herbert H. Hayden, of Madison, Conn., on a charge of murdering Mary Stannard, was begun in New Haven on the 7th of October, 1879, and was not concluded till near the middle of January, and, considering the time occupied, the character of the evidence and other' circumstances, it was one of the most memorable trials in the court annals of this country. Public interest in it became absorbed from the start and the wide-spread knowledge of it and watchful curiosity to learn every phase of it have been strikingly illustrated in the overwhelming correspondence that the publishers of this book have received from one end of the country to the other, making inquiries concerning the sale and price of the work. Readers will find in the testimony of Mr. And Mrs. Hayden, and in the abstracts of the arguments of counsel, a record of the leading events in the trial, together with the essential features of testimony which formed the scheme of the prosecution and the defensive elements on the other side. It has not been considered necessary to follow in detail the whole mass of evidence, material or speculative, which occupied the attention of the State throughout, because very much was introduced manifestly in support of theories which were finally not pressed. A sufficiently comprehensive idea of the leading facts and material elements of the trial is given to satisfy all readers - even those who have not pursued with care the current record of the proceedings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is sometimes thought, and very often said, that political writing, after its special day is done, becomes more dead than any other kind of literature, or even journalism. I do not know whether my own judgment is perverted by the fact of a special devotion to the business, but it certainly seems to me that both the thought and the saying are mistakes. Indeed, a rough-and-ready refutation of them is supplied by the fact that, in no few cases, political pieces have entered into the generally admitted stock of the best literary things."

Book excerpt: Raised in Japan by American expatriates, Karen Leith now lives a reclusive life in New York, known chiefly for her highly regarded novels, of which the latest has won a major American literary award. When she is found on the floor behind her desk, surrounded by blood, it looks like foul play. But the only possible suspect is Leith’s future daughter-in-law, Eva, who has recently become engaged. Eva swears by her innocence, even though she was the last to hear Leith alive and the first to find her dead. Eva was waiting outside Leith’s office to share the happy news and maintains that no one entered through that door, while the room's other possible exit was locked. The only one who can help her clear her name is mystery writer Ellery Queen, an acquaintance of the victim through New York’s literary circles. Queen intends to unravel the locked-room mystery, but with no murder weapon and too many incriminating fingerprints, this case just might be one even he can’t solve.
