Book excerpt: “If Jane Austen had been allowed to write about sex, I'd like to think this is how she would have done it.”—Rebecca Makkai, author of The Hundred-Year House An audaciously entertaining look at love, marriage, and the beloved Bennet family from Pride and Prejudice, as you’ve never seen them before . . . It is a truth universally acknowledged that every man in possession of a wife must be in want of a son. 1785 was to be the most marvelous year of Marianne’s life, until an unfortunate turn of events left her in a compromised state and desperate for a husband to care—or rather cover—for her. Now, she is stuck in an undesirable marriage to Mr. Edward Bennet, a man desperate in his own way for a male heir. But as she is still carrying a smoldering desire for the handsome Colonel Miller, Mrs. Bennet must constantly find new, clever ways to avoid her husband’s lascivious advances until she is once again reunited with her dashing Colonel. Except that the best-laid plans of a woman in good standing can so often go awry, especially when her contrary husband has plans and desires of his own . . .

Book Cleaning in Place

Download or read book Cleaning in Place written by Adnan Y. Tamime and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2008-05-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the Society of Dairy Technology's highly successful volume on Cleaning-in-Place (CIP). Already a well-established practice in dairy technology, CIP has become increasingly relevant in the processed food industry during the last 10-15 years, and the beverage industry has seen increased demands from customers regarding CIP verification and validation to provide improvements in plant hygiene and related efficiency. The book addresses the principles of cleaning operations, water supply issues and the science of detergents and disinfectants. Aspects of equipment design relevant to ease of cleaning are covered in a special chapter, as is the assessment of cleaning efficiency and the management of cleaning operations. This third edition features for the first time a chapter on membrane cleaning - a relatively new area requiring very specialised cleaning products and procedures. Useful data on fluid flow dynamics and laboratory test methods are also included in separate chapters. Authors have been selected from within industry, allied suppliers and academia to provide a balanced, leading edge assessment of the subject matter. Cleaning-in-Place is directed at dairy scientists and technologists in industry and academia, general food scientists and food technologists, food microbiologists and equipment manufacturers.

Book Oil Exploration Diplomacy and Security in the Early Cold War

Download or read book Oil Exploration Diplomacy and Security in the Early Cold War written by Roberto Cantoni and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of oil for national military-industrial complexes appeared more clearly than ever in the Cold War. This volume argues that the confidential acquisition of geoscientific knowledge was paramount for states, not only to provide for their own energy needs, but also to buttress national economic and geostrategic interests and protect energy security. By investigating the postwar rebuilding and expansion of French and Italian oil industries from the second half of the 1940s to the early 1960s, this book shows how successive administrations in those countries devised strategies of oil exploration and transport, aiming at achieving a higher degree of energy autonomy and setting up powerful oil agencies that could implement those strategies. However, both within and outside their national territories, these two European countries had to confront the new Cold War balances and the interests of the two superpowers.

Book Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence

Download or read book Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence written by Xun Shen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, great advances have been made in fundamental research and in the applications of bioluminescence and chemiluminescence. These techniques have become vital tools for laboratory analysis. Bioluminescence imaging has emerged as a powerful new optical imaging technique, offering real-time monitoring of spatial and temporal progression of biological processes in living animals. Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) methodology has also emerged as a powerful technique for the study of proteinprotein interactions. Luciferase reporter gene technology facilitates monitoring of gene expression and is used to probe molecular mechanisms in the regulation of gene expression. Chemiluminescence detection and analysis have also found diverse applications in life science research; for example, chemiluminescent labels and substrates are now widely used in immunoassay and nucleic acid probe-based assays. The latest advances in this exciting field, from fundamental research to cutting-edge applications, are explored in this most recent volume of the biannual symposium series, the Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence. The volume highlights advances in fundamental knowledge of luciferase-based bioluminescence, photoprotein-based bioluminescence, fundamental aspects and applications of chemiluminescence, luminescence imaging, fluorescence quantum dots and other inorganic fluorescent materials, phosphorescence and ultraweak luminescence, and instrumentation for measurement and imaging of luminescence.

Book Peace Education Evaluation

Download or read book Peace Education Evaluation written by Celina Del Felice and published by IAP. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practice and research of peace education has grown in the recent years as shown by a steadily increasing number of publications, programs, events, and funding mechanisms. The oft-cited point of departure for the peace education community is the belief in education as a valuable tool for decreasing the use of violence in conflict and for building cultures of positive peace hallmarked by just and equitable structures. Educators and organizations implementing peace education activities and programming, however, often lack the tools and capacities for evaluation and thus pay scant regard to this step in program management. Reasons for this inattention are related to the perceived urgency to prioritize new and more action in the context of scarce financial and human resources, notwithstanding violence or conflict; the lack of skills and time to indulge in a thorough evaluative strategy; and the absence of institutional incentives and support. Evaluation is often demand-driven by donors who emphasize accounting given the current context of international development assistance and budget cuts. Program evaluation is considered an added burden to already over-tasked programmers who are unaware of the incentives and of assessment techniques. Peace education practitioners are typically faced with forcing evaluation frameworks, techniques, and norms standardized for traditional education programs and venues. Together, these conditions create an unfavorable environment in which evaluation becomes under-valued, de-prioritized, and mythologized for its laboriousness. This volume serves three inter-related objectives. First, it offers a critical reflection on theoretical and methodological issues regarding evaluation applied to peace education interventions and programming. The overarching questions of the nature of peace and the principles guiding peace education, as well as governing theories and assumptions of change, transformation, and complexity are explored. Second, the volume investigates existing quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods evaluation practices of peace educators in order to identify what needs related to evaluation persist among practitioners. Promising practices are presented from peace education programming in different settings (formal and non-formal education), within various groups (e.g. children, youth, police, journalists) and among diverse cultural contexts. Finally, the volume proposes ideas of evaluation, novel techniques for experimentation, and creative adaptation of tools from related fields, in order to offer pragmatic and philosophical substance to peace educators’ “next moves” and inspire the agenda for continued exploration and innovation. The authors come from variety of fields including education, peace and conflict studies, educational evaluation, development studies, comparative education, economics, and psychology.
