Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern European economic history is marked by an endeavor to transcend the traditional national case study approach, to use comparisons and to deploy economic theory in order to draw the manifold and diverse experiences of the regions, countries and multicultural empires of Europe onto a unified frame of reference. These two volumes exemplify this modern approach. This Volume 5, of the eleven part set entitled Industrial Revolutions contains thirteen papers, with an introduction, which adopt and apply a conceptual and explicitly comparative approach to European economic history as a whole. Volume 5 includes sixteen national case studies, again organized around or set within the context of theoretical principles and ideas derived largely from macroeconomic theory, social accounting, productivity measurement and regional analysis.

Book The Bourgeois Revolution in France 1789 1815

Download or read book The Bourgeois Revolution in France 1789 1815 written by Henry Heller and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last generation the classic Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution has been challenged by the so-called revisionist school. The Marxist view that the Revolution was a bourgeois and capitalist revolution has been questioned by Anglo-Saxon revisionists like Alfred Cobban and William Doyle as well as a French school of criticism headed by François Furet. Today revisionism is the dominant interpretation of the Revolution both in the academic world and among the educated public. Against this conception, this book reasserts the view that the Revolution - the capital event of the modern age - was indeed a capitalist and bourgeois revolution. Based on an analysis of the latest historical scholarship as well as on knowledge of Marxist theories of the transition from feudalism to capitalism, the work confutes the main arguments and contentions of the revisionist school while laying out a narrative of the causes and unfolding of the Revolution from the eighteenth century to the Napoleonic Age.

  • Author : David S. Landes

  • Pages : 657 pages

Download or read book The Unbound Prometheus written by David S. Landes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over thirty years David S. Landes's The Unbound Prometheus has offered an unrivalled history of industrial revolution and economic development in Europe. Now, in this updated edition, the author reframes and reasserts his original arguments in the light of debates about globalisation and comparative economic growth. The book begins with a classic account of the characteristics, progress, and political, economic and social implications of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, France and Germany. Professor Landes here raises the much-debated question: why was Europe the first to industrialise? He then charts the economic history of the twentieth-century: the effect of the First World War in accelerating the dissolution of the old international economy; the economic crisis of 1929–32; Europe's recovery and unprecedented economic growth following the Second World War. He concludes that only by continuous industrial revolution can Europe and the world sustain itself in the years ahead.

Book Regional Identity and Economic Change

Download or read book Regional Identity and Economic Change written by Tom Scott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current debate about the best methods of European organization - central or regional - is influenced by an awareness of regional identity, which offers an alternative to the rigidities of organization by nation-state. Yet where does the sense of regionalism come from? What are thedistinctive factors that transform a geographical area into a particular 'region'? Tom Scott addresses these questions in this study of one apparently 'natural' region - the Upper Rhine - between 1450 and 1600. This region has been divided between three countries and so historically marginalized, yet Dr Scott is able to trace the existence of a sense of historical regional identity cutting across national frontiers, founded on common economic interests. But that identity was always contingent and precarious, neither 'natural' nor immutable.

Book Sir Robert Clayton and the Origins of English Deposit Banking 1658 1685

Download or read book Sir Robert Clayton and the Origins of English Deposit Banking 1658 1685 written by Frank T. Melton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon the most extensive early banking archive known to survive, this book is the first major study of Stuart banking since R. D. Richards's The Early History of Banking in England (1928). It traces the origins and growth of banking from the late sixteenth century to the 1720s through two generations of a scriveners' bank established in 1638 by Robert Abbott, and perpetuated by his nephew, Robert Clayton, and John Morris. With deposits from landowners' rents and stock sales these bankers practised as moneylenders and money-brokers for another sector of the gentry needing capital to offset the effects of the Great Rebellion and an agricultural depression. After 1660 Clayton and Morris integrated mortgage security into banking practice. This study examines the elaborate stages of land assessment and legal change which enabled bankers to offer large-scale, long-term securities to their clients, a pattern followed later by other banks such as Childs, Hoares, Martins and Coutts.

Book Private Banking in Europe

Download or read book Private Banking in Europe written by Youssef Cassis and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private bankers have been defined as owner-managers of their bank, irrespective of their type of activity, which could be in any field of banking, sometimes in conjunction with another one, especially commerce in the earlier periods. Analysing the experiences of European private bankers from the early modern period to the early twenty-first century, this book starts by examining the slow emergence of specialist private bankers, largely from amongst those who provided commercial credit. This initial consideration culminates in a focus upon the roles that they played, both during the onset of the continent's industrialization, and in orchestrating the finances of the emerging world economy. Its second theme is private banking's waning importance with the rise of joint-stock competitors, which became increasingly apparent in Britain during the mid-nineteenth century, and elsewhere within Europe some decades later. Lastly, attention is paid to the decline of private bankers in the twentieth century -a protracted and uneven decline, combined with the persistence and even the enduring success of some segments of the profession. It concludes with the revival of private banking in the late twentieth century as a response to the development of a new market - the management of personal wealth.
