Book excerpt: Cinema, Suffering and Psychoanalysis explores psychological disorder as common to the human condition using a unique three-angled approach: psychoanalysis recognises the inherent suffering encountered by each subject due to developmental phases; psychology applies specific categorisation to how this suffering manifests; cinema depicts suffering through a combination of video and aural elements. Functioning as a culturally reflexive medium, the six feature films analysed, including Black Swan (2010) and The Machinist (2004), represent some of the most common psychological disorders and lived experiences of the contemporary era. This book enters unchartered terrain in cinema scholarship by combining clinical psychology's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Five (DSM-V) to organise and diagnose each character, and psychoanalysis to track the origin, mechanism and affect of the psychological disorder within the narrative trajectory of each film. Lacan's theories on the infantile mirror phase, the Imaginary, and the Symbolic, Žižek's theories on the Real, the big Other and the Event, and Kristeva's theories on abjection and melancholia work in combination with the DSM's classification of symptoms to interpret six contemporary pieces of cinema. By taking into consideration that origin, mechanism, affect and symptomatology are part of an interconnected group, this book explores psychological disorder as part of the human condition, something which contributes to and informs personal identity. More specifically, this research refutes the notion that psychological disorder and psychological health exist as a binary, instead recognising that what has traditionally been pathologised, may instead be viewed as variations on human identity.

Book excerpt: This thesis is an analytical film studies project which aims to examine the human experience of psychological disorder and psychological suffering. Using key cinematic texts, the research investigates a group of Western feature films which each contain a central character experiencing psychological disorder. Functioning as a culturally reflexive medium, these films are representative of some of the more common psychological disorders in contemporary times. Clinical psychology's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Five is first used to organize and diagnose each character, but the textual analysis of these films is largely psychoanalytically informed. This project combines modern clinical psychologically and psychoanalysis so that a more comprehensive picture of the experience of psychological disorder and suffering may emerge. By taking into consideration that origin, mechanism, affect and symptomatology are part of an interconnected group, this project explores psychological disorder as a human phenomenon. More specifically, this research refutes the notion that psychological disorder and psychological health exist in a binary, instead recognizing that psychological status is a spectrum with many possible variations. Philosophical theory by Jacques Lacan, Slavoj Žižek and Julia Kristeva is used to explore these film characters and their respective disorders from a psychoanalytic viewpoint. Lacan's theories on the infantile mirror phase, the Imaginary, and the Symbolic, Žižek's theories on the Real, the big Other and the Event, and Kristeva's theories on abjection and melancholia are integral to the interpretation of these six films - tracking the origin, mechanism and manifestation of the psychological disorder through the narrative trajectory of each film analysed. The research confirms links between psychosis and a reliance on the image of the self; between unresolved guilt and psychological deterioration; between trauma and changes to identity; between emotional detachment and moral transgression; between physical space and subjectivity; between meaninglessness and language. As a group of films, the analysis also revealed that psychological suffering is intricately connected to the body, a sense of time and a sense of death.

By embracing such a rigid definition of male/female difference, they fail to understand the fundamentally complex and fluid process of sexual identification as it is articulated in Freud’s writing, constructed in film texts, and negotiated by spectators. The book turns to Freud’s work on fantasy to develop an alternative model for interpreting sexuality in the visual and narrative arts, one that emphasizes a ‘politics of critical reading’ over accepted theories of ideological identification. Science fiction films are particularly effective, using horror to induce sexual excitement, as studied in ‘Part I: The nature of desire in a trio of science fiction thrillers.’ Another device was to display unrestricted consumption of alcohol and tobacco and gratuitous spending. Today, this is a cliché of mainstream cinema but some filmmakers expose the dark underbelly. The five films scrutinized in ‘Part II: Portraits of addiction in Hollywood melodrama’ make explicit the connections between greed, addictions, and sexuality. Finally, in ‘Part III: Perverse desire in mainstream cinema,’ the nuanced position toward the psychosexual obsessions on view in the films is investigated by posing the provocative question of whether S&M practice can work as a “cure” for psychic suffering, by raising the alarm over sexuality run amok in a suburban community, and by offering a devastating critique of voyeurism’s “fatal attraction” to viewers. The Erotic Screen is an investigation of the nature of human sexuality through the medium of film. It stirs up discussion and debate – and helps these movies live on in our minds.

Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at. In the history of cinema Hitchcock appears as one who no longer conceives of the constitution of a film as a function of two termsthe director and the film to be made - but as a function of three: the director, the film and the public which must come into the film, or whose reactions must form an integrating part of the film. The interest of visual narrative in Alfred Hitchcock’s movies is well-documented and widely-known. His films provide a context for the analyses of spectatorship which examine the theories, structures, and functions of the gaze. Furthermore, by letting the spectator negotiating and producing the film’s meaning, Hitchcock’s works acknowledge the presence of the audience. His film’s calculated narrative style, the self-consciousness within his works, and the address of the spectator make his movies a prolific source for the examination of different approaches to the media viewer. In film theory, Hitchcock’s concentration on the male character and the male gaze represents a specific and often problematic debate. In my paper I will examine some of the theories that shaped the discourse of identifying and positioning the spectator within the narrative of film by focusing on Alfred Hitchcock’s filmMarnie(1964), since this movie is probably Hitchcock's most significant work to visualize the subjective psychological states of his problematic central character through the use of cinematic technique. First, I want to focus on a psychoanalytical interpretation by explaining the dynamics that Laura Mulvey describes in her analysis of conventional narrative films in the ‘classical’ Hollywood tradition that not only typically focus on a male protagonist in the narrative, but that also assume a male spectator. Theories that work within this tradition have cited Hitchcock as a director exemplary of the Freudian or Lacanian exegesis. By the 1980s Mulvey’s theory generated considerable controversy amongst film theorists and was criticized to present an oversimplification of Hitchcock’s agenda. Since then scholars shifted their interest to a strong empiric or historic focus on the spectator. The collapse of the psychoanalytic interpretation was replaced by heavily contextualized analyses that questioned universalizing categories. [...]
