Book From Film Practice to Data Process

Download or read book From Film Practice to Data Process written by Sarah Atkinson and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent have digital innovations transformed the UK film industry? What new practices and processes are emerging within the contemporary UK filmmaking landscape? What impact is this having upon filmmaking professionals? The business of conventional feature filmmaking is like no other, in that it assembles a huge company of people from a range of disciplines on a temporary basis, all to engage in the collaborative endeavour of producing a unique, one-off piece of work. By focusing on the pivotal year of 2012, and by considering the input of every single contributor to the process, this book illuminates how this period of analogue to digital transition is impacting upon working practices, cultures, opportunities and structures in the industry, and examines the various causative forces behind their adoptions and resistances. With an in-depth case study of Sally Potter's 2012 film 'Ginger & Rosa', and drawing upon interviews with international film industry practitioners, 'From Film Practice to Data Process' is a groundbreaking examination of film production in its totality, in a moment of profound change.

Book Screenwriters in French cinema

Download or read book Screenwriters in French cinema written by Sarah Leahy and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Screenwriters have been central figures in French cinema since the conversion to sound, from early French-language talkies for the domestic market to lavish literary adaptations of the notorious 'quality tradition' of the 1950s, and from the ‘aesthetic revolution’ of the New Wave to the contemporary popular and auteur film in the 2000s. The first English language study to address screenwriters in French cinema, this volume will be of particular interest to scholars and students of French film and screenwriting. Taking a diachronic approach, it includes case studies drawn from the early sound period to the present day in order to offer an alternative historiography of French cinema, shed light on these overlooked figures and revisit the vexed question of film authorship.

Book French speaking Women Documentarians

Download or read book French speaking Women Documentarians written by Janis L. Pallister and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French-Speaking Women Documentarians is a guide for teachers of French and others interested in selecting and researching the work of female French-speaking documentarians. Represented in this book are filmmakers from Canada, various African nations, the Antilles, Lebanon, Switzerland, Belgium, and several other countries, with emphasis on Agnès Varda of France - arguably the greatest female documentarian of all. The book includes information on each filmmaker, classified by country of origin, and lists and describes her works, giving factual information such as date, duration, credits, and synopses, and pointing out critical treatments, both in English and in French, of her most important films. Shorts, docudramas, and works of animation are also discussed, as they, too, reflect history and culture. This guide will lead to the viewing of films that shed understanding on the culture being portrayed and to a greater appreciation of the contribution of French-speaking women filmmakers to this important, if not always objective, film genre.

Book Film Manifestos and Global Cinema Cultures

Download or read book Film Manifestos and Global Cinema Cultures written by Scott MacKenzie and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film Manifestos and Global Cinema Cultures is the first book to collect manifestoes from the global history of cinema, providing the first historical and theoretical account of the role played by film manifestos in filmmaking and film culture. Focusing equally on political and aesthetic manifestoes, Scott MacKenzie uncovers a neglected, yet nevertheless central history of the cinema, exploring a series of documents that postulate ways in which to re-imagine the cinema and, in the process, re-imagine the world. This volume collects the major European “waves” and figures (Eisenstein, Truffaut, Bergman, Free Cinema, Oberhausen, Dogme ‘95); Latin American Third Cinemas (Birri, Sanjinés, Espinosa, Solanas); radical art and the avant-garde (Buñuel, Brakhage, Deren, Mekas, Ono, Sanborn); and world cinemas (Iimura, Makhmalbaf, Sembene, Sen). It also contains previously untranslated manifestos co-written by figures including Bollaín, Debord, Hermosillo, Isou, Kieslowski, Painlevé, Straub, and many others. Thematic sections address documentary cinema, aesthetics, feminist and queer film cultures, pornography, film archives, Hollywood, and film and digital media. Also included are texts traditionally left out of the film manifestos canon, such as the Motion Picture Production Code and Pius XI's Vigilanti Cura, which nevertheless played a central role in film culture.

Book Rogue Reels

    Book Details:
  • Author : Margaret Dickinson
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2019-07-25
  • ISBN : 1838717870
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Rogue Reels written by Margaret Dickinson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Dickinson's history of oppostional film is a pioneering account of an important by little documented aspect of modern British Cinema: the often extreme form of independent cinema that accompanied the radical politics of the 1960s and 70s. During the 70s an organized independent film and video movement emerged (including such filmmaking groups as London Filmmakers' Co-op, Cinema Action, Amber, Liberation Films and Sheffield Co-op). This avant-garde exerted an increasing influence within the British media mainstream - changing attitudes and practice, and enabling cross-over work by filmmakers such as Peter Greenaway and Sally Potter. This oppostional sector revolutionized British media, especially during the formation of Channel Four at the start of the 1980s, even as the political landscape at large was shifting dramatically to the right. Organized into three parts, 'Rogue Reels 'provides the first overview of the various strands of politicized filmmaking that emerged in postwar Britain. Part I is a concise history of the movement. Part II collects key texts and documents form the period 1971-92. Part III is made up of seven oral histories of the most influential production houses. Recuperating the radical tradition of postwar filmmaking (which continues to impact on today's media culture), 'Rogue Reels' raises urgent issues of policy and practice. Mixing narrative with first-hand accounts, and the important statements and documents of this movement the book provides the first overview of the different strands of filmmaking that are still impacting on avant-garde and mainstream practice.

Book Film Theory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Felicity Colman
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2014-09-16
  • ISBN : 0231850603
  • Pages : 145 pages

Download or read book Film Theory written by Felicity Colman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film Theory addresses the core concepts and arguments created or used by academics, critical film theorists, and filmmakers, including the work of Dudley Andrew, Raymond Bellour, Mary Ann Doane, Miriam Hansen, bell hooks, Siegfried Kracauer, Raul Ruiz, P. Adams Sitney, Bernard Stiegler, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. This volume takes the position that film theory is a form of writing that produces a unique cinematic grammar; and like all grammars, it forms part of the system of rules that govern a language, and is thus applicable to wider range of media forms. In their creation of authorial trends, identification of the technology of cinema as a creative force, and production of films as aesthetic markers, film theories contribute an epistemological resource that connects the technologies of filmmaking and film composition. This book explores these connections through film theorisations of processes of the diagrammatisation (the systems, methodologies, concepts, histories) of cinematic matters of the filmic world.

Book The Naval War Film

  • Author : Jonathan R. Rayner
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press

  • ISBN : 9780719070983
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book The Naval War Film written by Jonathan R. Rayner and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book undertakes a unique, coherent and comprehensive consideration of the depiction of naval warfare in the cinema. The films under discussion encompass all areas of naval operations in war, and highlight varying institutional and aesthetic responses to navies and the sea in popular culture. The examination of these films centres on their similarities to and differences from the conventions of the war genre and seeks to determine whether the distinctive characteristics of naval film narratives justify their categorisation as a separate genre or sub-genre in popular cinema.

Book Alice Guy Blach

Download or read book Alice Guy Blach written by Alison McMahan and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over a hundred years after she started making films (which was considerably earlier than D. W. Griffith, Mabel Normand, and Lillian Gish began their careers), the life and work of Alice Guy Blache is still shrouded in myth and controversy." "Only a fraction of the approximately one thousand films that she directed still exist, and almost half of these have been found very recently. The films are spread out in archives all over the world. Not all of them are available for viewing, even to scholars, and many of them are in desperate need of conservation and preservation." "It is widely agreed that she was the first woman filmmaker but there is considerable debate as to whether she made the first ever fiction film. She played a key role in early sound film production, and yet this part of her career is almost always ignored. She is, to this day, the only women ever to have owned and run her own film studio. And yet she made her final film in 1920, at the age of 47, and died in New Jersey in 1968 - unacknowledged, unheralded, almost totally forgotten." "Ten years of research has enabled Alison McMahan to piece together the career of this extraordinary woman. What results is the first full-length treatment of Alice Guy Blache's work, the debunking of several long-standing myths about her and, ultimately, the emergence of a feminist figurehead of the filmmaking industry."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
