Book Waiting for the End of the World

Download or read book Waiting for the End of the World written by Christopher M. Gerrard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waiting for the End of the World? addresses the archaeological, architectural, historical and geological evidence for natural disasters in the Middle Ages between the 11th and 16th centuries. This volume adopts a fresh interdisciplinary approach to explore the many ways in which environmental hazards affected European populations and, in turn, how medieval communities coped and responded to short- and long-term consequences. Three sections, which focus on geotectonic hazards (Part I), severe storms and hydrological hazards (Part II) and biophysical hazards (Part III), draw together 18 papers of the latest research while additional detail is provided in a catalogue of the 20 most significant disasters to have affected Europe during the period. These include earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, storms, floods and outbreaks of infectious diseases. Spanning Europe, from the British Isles to Italy and from the Canary Islands to Cyprus, these contributions will be of interest to earth scientists, geographers, historians, sociologists, anthropologists and climatologists, but are also relevant to students and non-specialist readers interested in medieval archaeology and history, as well as those studying human geography and disaster studies. Despite a different set of beliefs relating to the natural world and protection against environmental hazards, the evidence suggests that medieval communities frequently adopted a surprisingly ‘modern’, well-informed and practically minded outlook.

Book Imperialist Archaeology in the Canary Islands

Download or read book Imperialist Archaeology in the Canary Islands written by A. José Farrujia de la Rosa and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2005 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the rediscovery of the Canary Islands in the early 14th century, Europeans and Canarians alike have been trying to solve the question of the early colonisation of the islands. Various theories and controversies ensued, notably in the late 19th century when French and German scholars in particular took up the debate and, in the spirit of imperialist archaeology, created theories based on social and political issues rather than empirical data. This study examines theories on the colonisation of the islands both before and in the aftermath of imperialist archaeology and focuses on the impact of the latter on Canarian archaeological and anthropological research, institutions and scientific production.

Book Tropical Montane Cloud Forests

Download or read book Tropical Montane Cloud Forests written by L. A. Bruijnzeel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a uniquely comprehensive overview of our current knowledge on tropical montane cloud forests. 72 chapters cover a wide spectrum of topics including cloud forest distribution, climate, soils, biodiversity, hydrological processes, hydrochemistry and water quality, climate change impacts, and cloud forest conservation, management, and restoration. The final chapter presents a major synthesis by some of the world's leading cloud forest researchers, which summarizes our current knowledge and considers the sustainability of these forests in an ever-changing world. This book presents state-of-the-art knowledge concerning cloud forest occurrence and status, as well as the biological and hydrological value of these unique forests. The presentation is academic but with a firm practical emphasis. It will serve as a core reference for academic researchers and students of environmental science and ecology, as well as practitioners (natural resources management, forest conservation) and decision makers at local, national, and international levels.

Download or read book Qanat written by Dale Lightfoot and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qanats are ubiquitous, yet unseen, and a clever way to create streams where none exist in nature. For 3,000 years, they have made life possible in impossible places and still sustain life and livelihoods in many countries today. After 30 years of field research, Dale Lightfoot provides the first comprehensive study of the qanat and sheds new light on their unique locations and distribution, their origins and history, their ecology, current status and use. Qanats are remarkably engineered underground aqueducts, using gravity to bring water to villages and towns where reliable flowing surface water is scarce or absent. Although an ancient technology, more than 46,000 of them still flow around the world today, with their sustainable nature making them a focus of renewed interest. Richly illustrated with images and a series of original maps, this is the most complete record to date of the locations and distribution of qanats worldwide, including examples from the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, Central Asia, China, India, Mexico and South America.
