Book excerpt: The correspondence of Cicero - which has been passed on to us for the most part by his secretary, freedman Tiro, and by his best friend Atticus - gives us an insight into the lives and preoccupations of the politically active upper classes in Rome, particularly during Rome's turbulent transition time from Roman Republic to Roman Empire. Much of it provides a witness account of the evolving political tensions towards a civil war in Rome, including interactions with the ultimate opponents Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great. It also reveals insights into Cicero as a person and fellow human being, his thoughts and observations, worries and ambitions, intelligence and character. The emphasis of this compilation has been on selecting a variety of highlights which relate to Cicero's eventful life, his participation in and perception of the historical events, as well as his linguistic style and expressions. The highlights contain both formal and informal correspondence and are provided side-by-side in Latin and English. The correspondence also contains a fair amount of Greek proverbs and citations which are kept in the Greek character set and translated into English as well. The historical context of the correspondence is provided both in terms of some of the noteworthy historic events leading up to the end of the Republic as well as in terms of occasional notes and commentary about the correspondence itself.

Book excerpt: Though some study into the relationship between Cicero and Caesar has occurred, it is relatively little and the subject warrants more consideration. This is a significant gap in the historiography of late republican history. This thesis examines and attempts to define their relationship as a public amicitia. By looking at the letters of Cicero, his three Caesarian speeches, and his philosophical dialogue de Amicitia, I show that the amicitia between these two men was formed and maintained as a working relationship for their own political benefit, as each had something to gain from the other. Cicero's extant letters encompass a little more than the last twenty years of Cicero's life, when some of the most important events in Roman history were occurring. In this thesis, I examine selected letters from three collections, ad Quintum fratrem, ad Familiares, and ad Atticum for clues relating to Caesar's amicitia with Cicero. These letters reveal the tumultuous path that the amicitia between Cicero and Caesar took over the years of the mid-50s until Caesar's death, and , surprisingly, show Cicero's inability to choose a side during the Civil War and feel confident in that choice. After Caesar's victory at Pharsalus in 48, the letters reveal that Cicero hoped that Caesar could or would restore the republic, and that as time passed, he became less optimistic about Caesar and his government, but still maintained the public face of amicitia with Caesar. Cicero's three Caesarian speeches, pro Marcello, pro Ligario, and pro Rege Deiotaro, which he gave with Caesar in attendance, reveal that Cicero's hope for Caesar peaked in pro Marcello and that Cicero and Caesar were working together for pro Ligario. By the time that pro Rege was given however, Cicero was far more disenchanted with Caesar and his government, and his speech is more forced than his previous ones, which read as more sincere. The tenor of these orations fit with those of Cicero's letters; a similar pattern in Cicero's attitude towards Caesar can be seen in both the letters and speeches. The final source that is examined in this thesis is Cicero's de Amicitia, which is a piece of his philosophica that examines amicitia (friendship) in the Roman world. This is the only text written after Caesar's death that is examined in this thesis, and I believe that if it is read with an eye towards the amicitia between Caesar and Cicero, this treatise, which devalues ordinary political amicitia, gives the reader clues about the problems caused by political amicitia. While the majority of this treatise deals with a more warm kind of amicitia, I do not believe that this is what Cicero had with Caesar. They had neither a friendship nor an alliance but a forced cordial relationship that dipped into elements of friendship and alliance whenever strategically possible. Because of the necessity of their maintaining good relations, they formed this peculiar but extremely important variety of amicitia. Based on the evidence in this thesis, there was some kind of public amicitia between the two men, even after Caesar crossed the Rubicon, and especially after the Caesarian victory at Pharsalus in August of 48; that amicitia lasted down almost to the death of Caesar on March 15, 44.

This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By attacking Epicurean philosophy repeatedly in his public writings, Cicero established himself as one of Epicurus’ most fervent critics. The remarks that he makes about Epicureanism in his letters further suggest a genuine conviction that such a philosophy had no place in Roman society. This consistency in Cicero’s statements has led most scholars to assume that Cicero could not have embraced any of the principles of the Epicurean school. This book challenges the conventional view of Cicero as someone who completely rejected Epicurean philosophy-even in his private life-because of its utilitarian character. It argues that his relationship with Pompey, Caesar, Atticus, Quintus, Terentia, and Tullia encompassed several aspects of Aristotle’s account of φιλία (love and friendship) but was, nonetheless, ultimately based on expediency, in accord with Epicurus’ conception of φιλία. While Cicero’s statements in his public speeches and his letters to men with an active public life have been scrutinised for his lack of candour or for his tendency to exaggerate his achievements, the claims found in his letters to Atticus and to his family have not been treated with equal caution, as they tend be taken at face value. The book highlights the large number of discrepancies in his remarks and argues that, despite his anti-Epicurean statements, personal benefit played a vital role in all of his relationships.

Book Politeness and Politics in Cicero s Letters

Download or read book Politeness and Politics in Cicero s Letters written by Jon Hall and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politeness and Politics in Cicero's Letters presents a fresh examination of the letters exchanged between Cicero and correspondents, such as Pompey, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony during the final turbulent decades of the Roman Republic. Drawing upon sociolinguistic theories of politeness, it argues that formal relationships between powerful members of the elite were constrained by distinct conventions of courtesy and etiquette. By examining in detail these linguistic conventions of politeness, Jon Hall presents new insights into the social manners that shaped aristocratic relationships. The book begins with a discussion of the role of letter-writing within the Roman aristocracy and the use of linguistic politeness to convey respect to fellow members of the elite. Hall then analyzes the deployment of conventionalized expressions of affection and goodwill to cultivate alliances with ambitious rivals and the diplomatic exploitation of "polite fictions" at times of political tension. The book also explores the strategies of politeness employed by Cicero and his correspondents when making requests and dispensing advice, and when engaging in epistolary disagreements. (His exchanges with Appius Claudius Pulcher, Munatius Plancus, and Mark Antony receive particular emphasis.) Its detailed analysis of specific letters places the reader at the very heart of Late Republican political negotiations and provides a new critical approach to Latin epistolography.
