Book The Anatomy of the Developing Lung

Download or read book The Anatomy of the Developing Lung written by John Emery and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anatomy of the Developing Lung provides an introduction to the anatomical studies of the lung. This book discusses the structure of the developing fetal lung and reviews the knowledge on the development of goblet cells and glands in the trachea-bronchial tree in man. Organized into 11 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the general pattern of growth of the fetal lung and the development of the alveoli. This text then examines the important ultrastructural characteristics of the mature lung and explains the changes in the muscle of the blood vessels around birth. Other chapters consider the role and development of cartilage and examine the relationship between collagen and elastic tissue. This book discusses as well the general function of mature collagen. The final chapter deals with the measurement of postnatal lung weight. This book is a valuable resource for pediatricians, histologists, physiologists, clinicians, pathologists, and research workers.

Book Hormones and Lung Maturation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip L. Ballard
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642824838
  • Pages : 367 pages

Download or read book Hormones and Lung Maturation written by Philip L. Ballard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I reflect on the evolution of this book, I am struck by the differences be tween my early conceptions and the final product. When I was first ap proached by Springer-Verlag regarding a monograph on my interests in the area of fetal lung development, I imagined that it would be relatively easy to summarize my contributions, plus the work of other investigators as needed for proper perspective. This rather naive idea was abandoned as I prepared my initial outlines for the monograph. I quickly realized that con tributions from my laboratory are not sufficient for telling the story of "hormones and lung maturation". The result of this decision is a longer and more heavily-referenced book than I originally envisioned. Although I have attempted to discuss in considerable detail most aspects of hormones and the fetal lung, I know with certainty that I have not in cluded all relevant references in each area. In most of these instances this reflects my impatience or lack of diligence, and I offer my apologies to those investigators whose work has been so omitted. In some situations published work has not been cited in a deliberate decision to limit the breadth of discussion or, rarely, due to my judgment of major shortcom ings in experimental design or execution.

Book Regulation of Organ and Tissue Growth

Download or read book Regulation of Organ and Tissue Growth written by Richard J. Goss and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulation of Organ and Tissue Growth investigates the mechanisms underlying the regulation of organ and tissue growth. Theories of growth regulation are discussed, along with growth and renewal; factors that influence prenatal brain development; regulation of metabolic and functional properties of muscle; and the role of tension in muscle growth. Heart growth and size in homeotherms are also examined. Comprised of 18 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to two schools of thought that explain the orderly growth of organs and tissues: one contends that the dimensions of body parts are genetically predetermined, while the other holds that the correct size of an organ is a function of the physiological demands impinging on it. Subsequent chapters deal with the regulation of metabolic and functional properties of muscle; the role of tension in muscle growth; the regulation of skeletal growth; the role of erythropoietin in erythropoiesis; and humoral factors in the stimulation and inhibition of lymphopoiesis. The text also considers the postnatal development of the mammalian lung before concluding with a chapter that describes the regulation of ovarian growth by the pineal gland. This monograph will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers in biology and physiology.

Book The Rise of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology

Download or read book The Rise of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology written by Lawrence D. Longo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition offers an expanded and updated history of the field of fetal and neonatal development, allowing readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological aspects that contribute to the wellbeing or pathophysiology of newborns. In this concluding opus of a long and prominent career as a clinical scientist, Dr. Longo has invited new contributions from noted colleagues with expertise in various fields to provide a historical perspective on the impact of how modern concepts emerged in the field of fetal physiology and contributed to the current attention paid to the fetal origins of diseases in adults. In addition to new chapters on maternal physiology and complications during pregnancy, others trace the history of the Society for Reproductive Investigation, governmental funding of perinatal research, and major initiatives to support training in the new discipline of maternal fetal medicine, including the Reproductive Scientist Development program. The extensive survey provided by the author, who personally knew most of the pioneers in the field, offers a unique guide for all clinical and basic scientists interested in the history of – and future approaches to diagnosing and treating – pathologies that represent the leading causes of neonatal mortality and, far too often, life-long morbidity.
