Download or read book Remote Vision written by Alessandro De Francesco and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote Vision contains an English-Italian bilingual version of the most significant works in poetry and conceptual writing produced so far by Alessandro De Francesco. It is both a self-standing, coherent book and the most exhaustive collection of his poetry ever published in any language; containing a new version of the 2008 book Objects Displaced, the complete 2010 book Redefinition, the composite and still partially unpublished Cistern, the prose Foreign Body in Ascending Motion and the very recent work Inhabited Spaces. All the sections were rearranged for this publication by the author who decided that each section contain the complete English text followed by the complete Italian version, avoiding a face to face translation in order not to interrupt the flow of the reading. The whole book was beautifully translated by poets and Brown University alumni Belle Cushing and Dusty Neu, under the coordination of the acclaimed poet and Comparative Literature scholar Forrest Gander. This book condenses and proposes under a new light all the conceptual and emotional intensity of Alessandro De Francesco's poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christmas Oratorio begins in the 1930s, when Solveig Nordensson (wife of Aron and mother of Sidner) is accidentally killed. The grieving family abandons its home and moves to another town, hoping to start afresh, but finds that its emotional burdens have emigrated with it. Aron, bereft by the loss of his wife, starts "seeing" her in capricious hallucinations, and tragically seeks her reincarnation in a love-starved woman half a world away. The introverted Sidner begins a quest for emotional maturity that leads him into odd friendships with a remarkably self-reliant street boy and a free-spirited older woman. And grandson Victor, heir to the tortured legacy left by Solveig's death, finds redemption for himself in a staging of Bach's Christmas Oratorio - a performance begun by Solveig half a century earlier and interrupted by her tragic death.

Book excerpt: "The work of Giorgio Caproni has been translated into French, German, and Chinese, among others, but this collection is his first book-length English publication. His works are finely tuned to modern man's preoccupations with existence in a world deprived of certainties (for example, the existence or inexistence of God). Most are touched by experiences such as the Second World War and its atrocities, the Resistance Movement, or the death of loved ones, events that represent the conviction of a subject that will do its best to survive all adversity, uncompromised" -- from the Introduction by Pasquale Verdicchio

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2002 book is a guide to Italian usage for students who have already acquired the basics of the language and wish to extend their knowledge. Careful consideration is given throughout to questions of style, register, and politeness which are essential to achieving an appropriate level of formality or informality in writing and speech. It surveys the contemporary linguistic scene in Italy and gives ample space to the new varieties of Italian that are emerging in modern Italy. The influence of the dialects in shaping the development of Italian is also acknowledged. Clear, readable and easy to consult via its two indexes, this is an essential reference for learners seeking access to the finer nuances of the Italian language.

Download or read book Visual and Linguistic Representations of Places of Origin written by Maria Pia Pozzato and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the representations - both visual and linguistic - which people give of their own places of origin. It examines the drawings of interviewees who were asked to draw their own place of origin on a white A3 sheet, using pencil or colour, according to their choice. If they were born in a place they did not remember because they moved in when they were very small, they could draw the place they did remember as the scenario of their early childhood. The drawings are examined from three different perspectives: semiotics, cognitive psychology and geography. The semiotic instruments are used to describe how each person reconstructs a complex image of his/her childhood place, and how they translate their own memories from one language to another, e.g. from drawing to verbal story, trying to approach what they want to express in the best possible way. The cognitive-psychological point of view helps clarify the emotional world of the interviewees and their motivations during the process of reconstruction and expression of their childhood experiences. The geographical conceptualizations concern a cultural level and provide insight into the cartographic models that inspire the maps people drew. One of the main findings was the influence from cultural codes as demonstrated in the fact that most of the US students interviewed drew their maps showing considerable cartographic expertise in comparison to their European counterparts.

Download or read book I Am Your Air written by Antonio Romagnolo and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2011-12-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a woman who writes. She recounts the last hours of consciousness of her man. Leaving nothing out, she describes the moments prior to an incident, particularly her bitter loneliness. These reflections recorded in a diary have a very clear purpose. In a succession of memories, Beatrise gives out precious information. She claims to be a foreigner, confesses to love Italy, and hints at how important this man was in her life. She does this by averring that she was his lover, his childhood friend, and hinting at certainly having been much more. She writes of having had a child with Marco, but also of being the stepmother of his son, a young man with whom she falls in love and who will soon enter the world of adolescence, the fruit of Marco's and Marianne's marriage. Marco was a correspondent for a famous magazine in Britain; Marianne teaches cello at a prestigious college in London, while Beatrise is a woman behind schedule, still in school, and she must work very hard to make ends meet. Theirs has been a troublesome love triangle, an exciting and dangerous game that laid bare human vulnerabilities, but also a golden opportunity to achieve love.

Book excerpt: Before she was a Mammy, before she had Chisellers, and before they made her a Granny, Agnes Browne was Agnes Reddin, a young girl-or a Young Wan- growing up in the Jarro in Dublin. Brendan O'Carroll takes readers back to the heart of working-class Dublin, this time in the 1940s. Together with her soon to be lifelong best friend Marion Delany, young Agnes manages to survive the indignities and demands of Catholic school, the unwanted births of siblings, days spent in the factories and markets, and nights in the dance hall as rock-and-roll invades Dublin. But on the eve of her wedding night, the Jarro is alive with gossip—will Agnes be turned away at the altar? For the whole parish knows Agnes's not-so-well-kept secret. And with a mother falling further into dementia, and a younger sister turning to a life of crime, it's up to Agnes alone to keep her splintering family together, while trying to create one of her own. Filled with O'Carroll's trademark wicked wit and loving, larger-than-life characters, The Young Wan shows the hardscrabble beginnings of the ultimate Irish mother and family.
