Download or read book Gods Heroes Kings written by Christopher R. Fee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The islands of Britain have been a crossroads of gods, heroes, and kings-those of flesh as well as those of myth-for thousands of years. Successive waves of invasion brought distinctive legends, rites, and beliefs. The ancient Celts displaced earlier indigenous peoples, only to find themselves displaced in turn by the Romans, who then abandoned the islands to Germanic tribes, a people themselves nearly overcome in time by an influx of Scandinavians. With each wave of invaders came a battle for the mythic mind of the Isles as the newcomer's belief system met with the existing systems of gods, legends, and myths. In Gods, Heroes, and Kings, medievalist Christopher Fee and veteran myth scholar David Leeming unearth the layers of the British Isles' unique folkloric tradition to discover how this body of seemingly disparate tales developed. The authors find a virtual battlefield of myths in which pagan and Judeo-Christian beliefs fought for dominance, and classical, Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, and Celtic narrative threads became tangled together. The resulting body of legends became a strange but coherent hybrid, so that by the time Chaucer wrote "The Wife of Bath's Tale" in the fourteenth century, a Christian theme of redemption fought for prominence with a tripartite Celtic goddess and the Arthurian legends of Sir Gawain-itself a hybrid mythology. Without a guide, the corpus of British mythology can seem impenetrable. Taking advantage of the latest research, Fee and Leeming employ a unique comparative approach to map the origins and development of one of the richest folkloric traditions. Copiously illustrated with excerpts in translation from the original sources,Gods, Heroes, and Kings provides a fascinating and accessible new perspective on the history of British mythology.
Download or read book Do It God s Way and Get God s Results written by Roy Bacon and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus routinely taught with parables and earthly stories that resonated with people’s daily experiences. His lessons were personable and memorable, and enabled his followers to grasp profound spiritual revelations of the word of God. In Do it God’s Way and Get God’s Results, Pastor Roy Bacon emulates Jesus’ approach. He entwines authentic, thought-provoking anecdotes with each chapter theme to present Biblical truths more lucidly and reveal the benefits of choosing God’s way in every aspect of life. Throughout the book, he examines two alternatives to life’s results: choosing God’s way of doing things or choosing our way. The final chapter is a brief portrait of the life of Jesus Christ, our greatest example of how to do things God’s way and get His results. Do it God’s Way and Get God’s Results is not a how-to guide for overnight success, but biblically grounded advice for obtaining God’s best, now and in your future.

Download or read book The Witness A True Story written by david de Manbey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in the middle of a snow storm in the dead of night when I threw my shovel into a large snow mound and lifted my fist up to God in defiance. I was angry with him, and tired of life. That night he lifted the veil and showed me the reason for my torment - a hoard of demons attacking me and my family. The unseen was now the seen to me. It would be two more years of attacks from these spirits until I was given authority over them by committing my life to Jesus Christ. This is a true account of the unbelievable, the suffering brought about by these spirits to me and my family, and final redemption through Jesus Christ. I stand not as a believer of Jesus Christ from reviewing the evidence, but as a witness because of what I have seen and experienced - that Jesus Christ is exactly who He said He was. Blessed are they who believe but have not seen.
