Book Chunks and Language Development

Download or read book Chunks and Language Development written by Manjula Duraiswamy and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-12-24 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chunks and Language Development is a teacher resource manual which is based on the Lexical Approach to language learning. Attested by classroom practices, it empowers teachers for their role as facilitators of language learning. The book can be used as an independent resource across boards and curriculum requirements. Chunks Methodology, follows the Lexical Approach, where emphasis is given to ‘strings of language’ or ‘lexical patterns‘ in promoting understanding of underlying grammatical structures. These lexical patterns, found in language use, are also known as “lexical phrases”,” lexical items”,” multi-word chunks” or just “chunks” of language. These are generally fixed expressions, similes, idioms, collocations, and phrasal verbs. In this book Manjula Duraiswamy, discusses what chunks are - various attributes of chunks, types of chunks, how they operate in a language, and the role they play in language acquisition and production. Chunks are an important feature of language use and this book describes how they can be used in the classroom; it is a readymade training tool with tasks and worksheets providing invaluable support for language learning in the classroom. A reflective approach to training is envisaged within these tasks and activities. This book would be useful for both teachers and trainers especially because all the strategies discussed here have been tried and tested by the author for nearly ten years in classrooms and training rooms. Book Ho Chunk Powwows and the Politics of Tradition

Download or read book Ho Chunk Powwows and the Politics of Tradition written by Grant Arndt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ho-Chunk powwows are the oldest powwows in the Midwest and among the oldest in the nation, beginning in 1902 outside Black River Falls in west-central Wisconsin. Grant Arndt examines Wisconsin Ho-Chunk powwow traditions and the meanings of cultural performances and rituals in the wake of North American settler colonialism. As early as 1908 the Ho-Chunk people began to experiment with the commercial potential of the powwows by charging white spectators an admission fee. During the 1940s the Ho-Chunk people decided to de-commercialize their powwows and rededicate dancing culture to honor their soldiers and veterans. Powwows today exist within, on the one hand, a wider commercialization of and conflict between intertribal “dance contests” and, on the other, efforts to emphasize traditional powwow culture through a focus on community values such as veteran recognition, warrior songs, and gift exchange. In Ho-Chunk Powwows and the Politics of Tradition Arndt shows that over the past two centuries the dynamism of powwows within Ho-Chunk life has changed greatly, as has the balance of tradition and modernity within community life. His book is a groundbreaking study of powwow culture that investigates how the Ho-Chunk people create cultural value through their public ceremonial performances, the significance that dance culture provides for the acquisition of power and recognition inside and outside their communities, and how the Ho-Chunk people generate concepts of the self and their society through dancing.

Book The Adaptive Brain II

Download or read book The Adaptive Brain II written by Stephen Grossberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adaptive Brain, II: Vision, Speech, Language, and Motor Control focuses on a unified theoretical analysis and predictions of important psychological and neurological data that illustrate the development of a true theory of mind and brain. The publication first elaborates on the quantized geometry of visual space and neural dynamics of form perception. Discussions focus on reflectance rivalry and spatial frequency detection, figure-ground separation by filling-in barriers, and disinhibitory propagation of functional scaling from boundaries to interiors. The text then takes a look at neural dynamics of perceptual grouping and brightness perception. Topics include simulation of a parametric binocular brightness study, smoothly varying luminance contours versus steps of luminance change, macrocircuit of processing stages, paradoxical percepts as probes of adaptive processes, and analysis of the Beck theory of textural segmentation. The book examines the neural dynamics of speech and language coding and word recognition and recall, including automatic activation and limited-capacity attention, a macrocircuit for the self-organization of recognition and recall, role of intra-list restructuring arid contextual associations, and temporal order information across item representations. The manuscript is a vital source of data for scientists and researchers interested in the development of a true theory of mind and brain.
