Book excerpt: From its fiery revivalists to socially conscious reformers, The Wesleyan Church is a movement with a rich tradition and inspiring history in America. Robert Black and Keith Drury trace the church's heritage from its roots in European and American Methodism, through the 1968 merger of the Wesleyan Methodist and Pilgrim Holiness Churches, all the way to recent historic events. With a contemporary, conversational style, The Story of the Wesleyan Church offers a reader-friendly narrative of the growth and development of the church. Photographs throughout the book, with detailed captions, provide a journalistic map for easy access. The coauthors each represent one of the merging denominations which formed the church in 1968, weaving Pilgrim Holiness and Wesleyan Methodist threads into a single, colorful tapestry that both represents the history and anticipates the future of The Wesleyan Church. Pastors, students, and others interested in what God is doing in the world will not want to miss this narrative history. Let God's past faithfulness inspire your work toward the future!

Book The Meaning of Pentecost in Early Methodism

Download or read book The Meaning of Pentecost in Early Methodism written by Laurence W. Wood and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2002-09-23 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Fletcher's theology of Pentecost is generally unknown today, and this book is the first comprehensive treatise on this subject. His writings were in large part responsible for shaping the theology of early American Methodism, especially his treatise on Christian Perfection, which highlighted a theology of Pentecostal sanctification. Wood recounts the decisive influence Fletcher had on early Methodism, and shows that his writings were able to "control the opinions of the largest and most effective body of evangelical clergymen of the earth." Fletcher's views on the Holy Spirit were also relevant in the ecumenical movement, specifically with reference to the World Council of Churches Commission on Faith and Order held in Lima, Peru, in 1982. This group recommended the introduction of a liturgy of the Spirit in Christian baptism. For students and scholars or general readers interested in Methodist history and theology. Also a resource for pastors-helpful in developing a theology of Pentecost that will preach in a relevant way in the contemporary world.

Book The Methodist Defense of Women in Ministry

Download or read book The Methodist Defense of Women in Ministry written by Paul W. Chilcote and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley promoted the ministry of women in early Methodism. Amazing women like Phoebe Palmer, Catherine Booth, and Frances Willard—founding figures in the holiness movement, the Salvation Army, and the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union—claimed biblical precedent for their groundbreaking ministries. They withstood the onslaught of criticism and hostility from those who thought they had stepped out of their proper sphere. Methodists have championed the cause of women and developed biblical, spiritual, and practical arguments for their ministry for two and a half centuries. More than fifty documents from the history of Methodism chronicle the tortuous journey leading to biblical equality in this family of churches. At a time when the ministry of women is under serious attack in a number of quarters, yet again, we all have much to learn from the witness of Wesleyan Christians who argued for women’s ministry. This story illustrates how faithful women, when they knew they had the Lord’s approval, stood “like the beaten anvil to the stroke.” Courage. Defiance. Perseverance. Faithfulness. These qualities define the Methodist defense of women in ministry.

Book Origin of Wesleyan Methodism in Sierra Leone and History of Its Missions

Download or read book Origin of Wesleyan Methodism in Sierra Leone and History of Its Missions written by Charles Marke and published by First Fruits Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The digital copies of these recordings are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits Preface Knowing that it is a serious disadvantage to any people or country whose history is not written for the benefit of posterity, it has, for many years past, occurred to me that I ought to attempt something in this direction in connexion with Wesleyan Methodism, which has not only existed in this Colony of Sierra Leone for more than a century, but has conferred numerous untold benefits, intellectual, moral, and spiritual, on the people in general. Owing to the attendant strain of a Methodist Circuit life, and the great responsibility that rested on me as a Superintendent Minister since the early part of 1867, I could not possibly afford time to undertake the gigantic work of preparing a history of the rise and progress of Methodism and its Missions in Sierra Leone. A gracious Providence having, however, mercifully spared me to retire from the multifarious duties of circuit work at the close of the first quarter of the year 1910, after fifty-one years' active service, I feel that, as the oldest Wesleyan minister in the district, God has no doubt preserved me for the accomplishment of the important task; I must therefore at once proceed to put together certain facts from credible and available records, along with my reminiscences of sundry matters that are about half a century old, for the information alike of both young and old. With the belief that the obituaries of both the European Missionaries and African Ministers that died in the work here or elsewhere will be foundinteresting and appreciated, particularly in Methodistcircles in which they were not previously known; their insertion will be given in the pages within therespective decades in which the deaths occurred. For the map of Sierra Leone showing approximate Tribal Divisions the writer of this history is indebted to Mr. C. H. Lukach's book, A Bibliography of Sierra Leone.
