Book Possessed Victorians

Download or read book Possessed Victorians written by Sarah A. Willburn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her absorbing study of nineteenth-century mystical writings, Sarah Willburn formulates a new conception of individualism that offers a fresh look at Victorian subjectivity. Drawing upon extensive archival work in the British Library, Willburn analyzes séance accounts, novels about mediumship, and metaphysical treatises to make important connections between contemporary writings on mysticism and fictional works. Willburn presents the theories of compelling characters such as Newton Crosland and Lois Waisbrooker and provides exciting new readings of well-known texts by Charlotte Brontë, Eliot, Martineau, and Corelli. An understanding of the Victorian fascination with mysticism, Willburn argues, leads to a better appreciation of cultural constructions of the citizen in England and of the public sphere. She introduces two key concepts against the backdrop of popular mysticism: "possessed individualism," a model for Victorian individualism based on spiritual possession, and "extra spheres," which complicate the traditional binary opposition of public and private. Together, these formulations urge us to rethink our views of Victorian political economy and gender as they pertain to mystical and religious practices.

Book Photographing the Invisible

Download or read book Photographing the Invisible written by James Coates and published by . This book was released on 1911 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 100 year old book the mechanics of spirit photography are explained by apparent spirits communicating through mediums. It has to do with ether and semi-materialization apparently. However, the presence of a medium before the taking of the photograph is essential, reportedly. In addition, the medium should be morally and physically healthy and able to maintain a passive mental state. Anxiety is reportedly a great hindrance. That way, the subconscious thought forms are liberated. There's a photo of Alfred Russel Wallace and his deceased mother. Wallace states, "The facts were too many for me." Photos of people's doubles were apparently also possible, such as the photo taken of medium Stainton Moses and his double. Mr. Coates includes a photo of himself and his dead wife. Thought photography is discussed towards the end of the book, which apparently dates from 1876. Images of objects enter and fix themselves in our brains through the retina, and then they can leave our brains by the same route, reportedly. Coates includes a letter from a correspondent who reportedly received evidence that there is a large band of workers in the spirit world who are "helping to convince the Western World that there are things and beings which cannot be cognised by ordinary sense faculty." A good book to generate conversation about

Preface As a further contribution to psychic science I have written this work, which represents some of the results of my inquiries and personal research. In a former book, Seeing the Invisible, which his late Majesty King Edward was pleased to accept, I touched --among other studies--upon thought and spirit photography. Sir William Crookes, O.M., F.R.S., the distinguished savant, commended the book most favourably: -- It is written in a fair spirit which invites unbiassed criticism. The incidents related in it and the arguments put forward are such as to demand the careful attention of thoughtful men, and the author impartially points out some difficulties and discrepancies. In the present work I give a fuller and more complete record of spirit photography than was at all possible in the pages of Seeing the Invisible--I trust also in a fair spirit which invites careful reading before criticism. Spirit photographs, spirit portraiture, and spirit writings belong to the rarer phases of psycho-physics. They are either produced by the operations of Intelligences in the Invisible--through appropriate media-- or man possesses psychic faculties and powers which have not yet received the attention they demand. Spiritualists believe that spirits can be photographed. Experts--many of whom have never investigated--declare all spirit photographs fraudulent. To both my answer is: "The evidence does not support either hypothesis, but for the fact of spirit photography it is most conclusive." Many problems, puzzles, and difficulties met with in the course of investigation are clearly stated. I have, however, omitted all reference to the experiments of Dr Baraduc and the photographing of invisible radiations from radio-active bodies, and matters already...

Book Spirit photographs are objective copies from subjective images impressed upon the ether of space and constantly thrown out by our thoughts and deeds

Download or read book Spirit photographs are objective copies from subjective images impressed upon the ether of space and constantly thrown out by our thoughts and deeds written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2019-04-07 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Spirit” photographs allow a large margin for criticism, as they leave everything unexplained, and the figures are by no means satisfactory. There exists an infinite ocean of ether, in which all material substance floats, and through which are transmitted all the forces in the physical universe. An occult explanation of “Spirit” photographs is that they are objective copies from subjective photographs impressed upon the ether of space, and constantly thrown out by our thoughts, words, and deeds. So long as “Spirit” photography instead of being regarded as a science, is presented to the public as a new Revelation from the God of Israel and Jacob, the jury will continue deliberating for much longer.

Book The Bible in Photography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sheona Beaumont
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2024-01-25
  • ISBN : 0567706567
  • Pages : 526 pages

Download or read book The Bible in Photography written by Sheona Beaumont and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheona Beaumont addresses the untold story of biblical subjects in photography. She argues that stories, characters, and symbols from the Bible are found to pervade photographic practices and ideas, across the worlds of advertising and reportage, the book and the gallery, in theoretical discourse and in the words of photographers themselves. Beaumont engages interpretative tools from biblical reception studies, art history, and visual culture criticism in order to present four terms for describing photography's latent spirituality: the index, the icon, the tableau, and the vision. Throughout her journey she includes lively discussion of selected fine art photography dealing with the Bible in surprising ways, from images by William Henry Fox Talbot in the 19th century to David Mach in the 21st. Far from telling a secular story, photography and the conditions of its representations are exposed in theological depth.; Beaumont skillfully interweaves discussion of the images and theology, arguing for the dynamic and potent voice of the Bible in photography and enriching visual culture criticism with a renewed religious understanding.

Book Evenings at Home in Spiritual Seance

Download or read book Evenings at Home in Spiritual Seance written by Georgiana Houghton and published by Victorian Secrets. This book was released on 2013 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the years 1870-1881, Evenings at Home in Spiritual Seance (Second Series ) documents the everyday, yet astonishing, experiences of spirit activity within the domestic space of the Victorian parlour. Through the intimacy of her diary-like prose, Houghton conjures cosy images of spirits laying the table for tea in what she called the "interblending of the heavenly and the mundane." She is equally comfortable communicating with her beloved pet dove as she is with the archangel Gabriel, living an unassuming yet spiritually rich life, filled with people of this world and the next. Houghton narrates her experiences of seances and trance mediumship with close friends, discusses her own automatic spirit drawings, and offers an autobiographical glimpse into her day-to-day business. This critical edition, edited by Sara Williams, includes: * Introduction * Author biography * Select bibliography * Explanatory footnotes * Appendices on 'Houghton in the Spiritualist press', 'Automatic spirit drawings' and 'Houghton's spirit photography'
