Book Handbook of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Download or read book Handbook of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia written by Timothy P Hughes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, clinically focused pocket handbook assembles and synthesizes the latest developments and trends in the diagnosis and treatment of CML and provides an authoritative and convenient summary of the latest progress in TKI trials, the molecular monitoring of CML responses, and the development of new therapies to overcome resistance and improve patient care. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a rare type of leukemia (1–2 per 100,000 people) but is the most common chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm. CML remains a key model for the improved understanding of the pathophysiology of a malignancy at a molecular level; CML was the first cancer to be associated with a recurring chromosome abnormality, which generates the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome and its associated fusion gene BCR-ABL1. The clinical outcome for patients with CML has changed dramatically in the past 15 years and this has been due to the development of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), compounds that inhibit the activity of the oncogenic BCR-ABL1 protein. A number of first-, second- and third-generation TKIs are now available for the treatment of CML, although a number of treatment challenges remain, not least the development of treatment-resistant CML. Parallel to the development of specific drugs for treating CML, major advances have been made in the field of disease monitoring and standardization of response criteria.

Book Fast Facts Treatment Free Remission in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Download or read book Fast Facts Treatment Free Remission in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia written by Sandeep Potluri and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) imatinib was the first treatment to specifically target cancer cells, rather than the relatively indiscriminate effects of conventional chemotherapy on any rapidly dividing cells. This concept of targeted treatment in cancer is one of the important advances in modern medicine in the last 30 years. Indeed, treatment with TKIs has transformed chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) from a cancer with a poor prognosis to one in which many patients can expect a normal lifespan. Success with the TKIs has prompted the question of whether it is desirable – or feasible – for patients to remain on treatment for long periods. While the TKIs are targeted, they are associated with considerable toxicity, and long-term treatment has important economic implications for health services and patients. Thus, the concept of treatment-free remission (TFR) has emerged for patients in deep clinical remission. Clinical research over the last decade has focused on whether treatment can be stopped, how to best monitor patients while off treatment, and how to intervene before a clinical relapse. As this research progresses, the tantalizing prospect of a cure for some patients seems increasingly feasible. This new Fast Facts title outlines this trail-blazing approach to the long-term management of patients living with CML in remission. It explains the concepts of molecular and hematologic relapse, the highly sensitive technologies that allow disease monitoring, and how TFR is best managed in practice. It is a concise educational resource, ideal for any healthcare professional involved in the treatment of patients with CML who wants to understand TFR, particularly clinical nurse specialists and pharmacists who increasingly help clinicians to run CML clinics. Table of Contents: • The concept of treatment-free remission • Measurement of disease burden • Clinical practice • Future directions

Book Practical Lymph Node and Bone Marrow Pathology

Download or read book Practical Lymph Node and Bone Marrow Pathology written by Endi Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-28 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a step-by-step and practically applicable approach for the accurate and clinically relevant diagnosis of lymph node (LN) and bone marrow (BM) biopsies. Clinicians expect pathological guidance not only with accurate diagnosis, but also about disease progression, minimal residual disease, disease susceptibility to a particular therapy, effects of prior therapy on prognosis and subsequent therapy etc. This book provides brief but to the point guidance about the prognostic and therapeutic implications of key ancillary studies so that the pathologist is comfortable to answer clinician’s questions over the entire arc of manifestations and management of the disease. The text follows the WHO (2016) classification in essence but the material is organized in a fashion most useful to a practicing surgical pathologist. This is achieved by focusing on the morphological findings as the starting point. Using this morphological “backbone” and several frequently asked questions (FAQs) the reader is guided to a rational list of differential diagnoses leading to a definitive diagnosis. The contents of each chapter are carefully selected so that the practically important and directly applicable information is available in an easy-to-find and easy-to-grasp format. Practical Lymph Node and Bone Marrow Pathology serves as a practical introduction and handbook for pathology trainees and hematopathology fellows and will remain a useful reference to practicing pathologists when they are signing out lymph nodes or bone marrow specimens.

Book Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Download or read book Chronic Myeloid Leukemia written by Uday R. Popat and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Targeted therapy has revolutionised modern oncology practice and has completely changed the outcome of once universally fatal diseases like chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). The last decade has witnessed significant advances in the management of CML, which has become more like a chronic disease. Written by experts in the field, this volume nicely describes the current knowledge of the pathophysiology, clinical features, and management of CML. It covers not only clinical topics but also the basic science underlying these practices. It will be of help to clinicians and basic scientists alike. In addition to the state of the art treatment of CML, this book also covers many uncommon but very important special topics like management of CML in pregnancy or with children, management of resistance to new tyrosine kinases and treatment of the advanced phase of the disease. Written to be easily digestible, patients will also be able to access important and universally useful information on CML (eg: diagnosis, symptoms and signs, and treatment). Some themes especially, including drug and food interactions of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), CML treatment during pregnancy, advantages/disadvantages of the most commonly used TKIs, and bone marrow transplantation indications, will be of popular concern. This extensively referenced book therefore should be of great help to both novices and experts in the field.

Book Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia and Interferon

Download or read book Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia and Interferon written by Dieter Huhn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on the effect of recombinant human interferon (rIFN) on the growth of colonies of multi potential hematopoietic progenitors have demonstrated that IFN inhibits the growth of these cells in culture. The inhibitory effect of IFN was more pronounced in multilineage colony forming cells (CFU-GEMMT) of marrow cells of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) compared with stern cells of normal marrow. T cell colony formation (CFU-TL) of phi_positive T cells obtained from primary multilineage hematopoietic colonies was inhibited by rIFN. Inhibition of T cell colony formation of Phi T cells was more profound by IFN compared with secondary T cells of healthy individuals. Southern blot analysis of secondary T cells from normal individuals revealed a germ line pattern when examined for T cell receptor (TcR) gene re arrangements using the cDNA of the beta chain. Subcloned Phi T cells of one patient with CML demonstrated gene rearrangements of the TcR. We also demonstrated the disappearance of phi_positive multilineage hematopoietic colonies when marrow cells were preincubated with IFN and subsequently cultured in the presence of IFN. The cytoconversion of the Phi chromosome in metaphases obtained from individually analyzed multilineage hematopoietic colonies suggests that IFN might allow the restoration of nonclonal hematopoiesis in patients with CML. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Pathogenesis and Treatment of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia provides a comprehensive understanding of the recent molecular genetics of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) and a characterization of the molecular targets for drug development. Included are therapeutic implications, diagnosis, and prognosis for understanding and facilitating daily practice in the management of patients with CML. Understanding of the pathogenesis and therapy of hematological malignancies such as CML has grown significantly in recent years. This development owe much to the progress in molecular biology and now makes a major contribution to diagnosis and to treatment that pharmacologically targets the molecular events of CML. Molecular targeting therapy with newly developed agents such as small molecules and antibodies for hematological malignancies are being discovered after years of research. Some of these, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as imatinib, nilotinib, and dasatinib, lead to increased survival rates and improved therapies. With the opinion leaders of basic and clinical research in the field as authors, this book reviews recent advances in the biology of CML.
