Book Chronic Ailments and Their Cure Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chronic Ailments and Their Cure Classic Reprint written by C. S. Eldridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronic Ailments and Their Cure Doctors have failed in the past, and good doctors, too, because they did not understand that what most people complain of as actual disease 1s but the reflected shadow of it, and not the disease itself. Most symptoms we, as physicians, are called upon to treat, are due to morbid conditions located at points remote from those to which our attention is usually directed by patients. Too many times the patient makes the trump, plays the leading card, and the doctor follows suit. To the medical man who understands the subject of reflex or sympathetic irritation, such a course is an impossibility, for he certainly can point out the reasons for a patient's misconceived notions, and by logical reasoning predi cated upon a thorough knowledge and understanding of orificial philosophy, orificial pathology, and or'ificial treatment, portray the exact nature of ailments, and make appear reasonable a cer tainty of cure. Experience and much observation have taught me that what most people complain of - I mean such as have symptoms, but never could succeed in cornering their trouble, or getting a suitable name for it - invariably have a localized, mor bid condition, situated in some cavity or channel, ensconced, as it were, conveniently out of sight, yet always working to the great discomfort and abridgment of health. To state it more explicitly, the aches and pains, the blanched and sad faces we see in such multiplied numbers; the disordered and faulty working stomachs, the hearts irritable and palpitating, torpid livers, kidneys crippled in their work, bowels poor in peristaltic action, minds amiss in either sex, are but the inevitable, the legitimate fruits of nerve waste. Nerve waste is responsible for a poor capillary circulation, which may mean congestion in one part and lack of blood in an other. Capillary circulation makes and keeps bones in repair; through it assimilation and nutrition are carried on. If this be so, then it must be plain that to abridge or destroy capillary action is to abridge repair, and the processes that sustain life. Hence there is no bond of union between these forces and the organism, and it must be possible to separate them. As the invasion of the organism by those forces and their attempts at adapting the or ganism to themselves constitute disease, so does the separation of those forces from the organism constitute the cure of that disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water Cure in Chronic Disease: An Exposition of the Causes, Progress, and Terminations of Various Chronic Diseases of the Digestive Organs, Lungs, Nerves, and of Skin; And of Their Treatment by Water, and Other Hygienic Means Every writer supposes that his work is to supply some want. My object in publishing this treatise, is to afford a truthful and rational exposition of the value of the water treatment in certain chronic diseases. I apprehend that it is wanted, because the works on the subject of the water cure which have hitherto appeared in this country contain, so far as my experience informs me, much over statement as to its operation, and are moreover written rather to catch the hopeful invalid, than to enlighten him as to the nature of his disease, or the mode in which the water plan is to relieve it. From this remark I except the work of Dr. E. Johnson, entitled, Hydropathy, wherein the manner in which the water cure Operates on the chemistry of the living body is very ably traced. The other works have not the slightest claim to be called scientific. In the First Part of this work, the origin, progress, extension, and terminations of Chronic Disease in general, are delineated and explained, and one general deduction from the facts made, - namely, that no disease becomes chronic, unless the central organs of nutrition are affected. Download or read book Heart Disease Rheumatism Dispepsia C written by Samuel Sheldon Fitch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heart Disease, Rheumatism, Dispepsia, &C: Their Cure IN common with all medical students, my early teachings were that diseases of the heart were utterly incurable; that there was no remedy for them, and that the unfortunate sufl'erers had no refuge but in death. Early in my practice I was consulted in many such cases, and I could ofl'er neither remedies, consolation, nor hope of cure. At length these distressing instances forced themselves so frequently upon my notice that I was led to make the inquiry, Were the principles of medicine at fault, and so much at fault, that they could not be successfully applied to the treatment of dis ease of the heart? Was Medicine a myth? And were medical remedies so powerless that, when such an organ as the heart became diseased, there were none to be found adapted to its cure? I could not content myself with the affirmative answer. I believed that Medicine was not a fallacy, but, on the contrary, a great and sub lime truth, and that no disease probably existed for which there were not adequate remedies. I knew that fatal mechanical obstruc tions might exist, but I believed that disease, properly so denomi Dated, must be within the reach of remedies. Book Of Nature and Art in the Cure of Disease Classic Reprint

Download or read book Of Nature and Art in the Cure of Disease Classic Reprint written by John Forbes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of Nature and Art in the Cure of Disease It is true that, since the period referred to, great advances have been made in some important points of the history of diseases, as in their structural pathology or morbid anatomy, as well as in many of their physiological relations so that it must be admitted that well-informed practitioners of the present day, have a much deeper insight into the exact character of many of the diseases treated by them, than was possessed by their predecessors. It is very remarkable, however, that in regard to one most important part of the history of diseases, that, namely, of their natural course and event, infinitely less progress has been made insomuch that it may now be affirmed that the practitioners of the present day are, speaking generally, almost as uninformed in this particular as were their predecessors fifty or a hundred years back.
