Book excerpt: La croissance de la demande pétrolière et la limitation des ressources disponibles exigent une valorisation plus poussée du pétrole tout en limitant l'impact sur l'environnement. Ceci peut être réalisé par la mise en œuvre de procédés plus performants de purification et de conversion des coupes lourdes, notamment les distillats sous vide (DSV) (350-615°C), vers des bases "carburants". Les procédés envisagés, e.g. hydrocraquage, ont un coût d'investissement très important. Parmi les axes d'amélioration, la mise en œuvre de modèles cinétiques plus précis constitue un enjeu stratégique qui s'appuie notamment sur les progrès de la caractérisation analytique des charges, l'objectif analytique étant d'obtenir une information détaillée par fraction molaire. Les données expérimentales disponibles pour les coupes lourdes sont limitées à des descriptions macroscopiques, restreignant ainsi la compréhension des réactions et donc la mise au point de modèles prédictifs (modèles de regroupement ou de réseaux d'étapes élémentaires). L'objectif de la thèse est de disposer d'un nouvel outil de caractérisation analytique des DSV, afin d'améliorer le lien entre description des charges et modèles de reconstruction, mais également pour étendre la connaissance sur les effluents des procédés de conversion, mais aussi sur le rôle des catalyseurs. L'enjeu est aussi de disposer d'un développement méthodologique applicable à terme à d'autres types de matrices complexes : liquéfiats de charbon, biomasse... Pour répondre à cette problématique, nous avons mis en œuvre des systèmes de chromatographie multidimensionnelle, permettant d'obtenir une grande capacité d'information sur les matrices très complexes. Dans une première approche, nous avons pu étendre la gamme de la chromatographie gazeuse bidimensionnelle (GC×GC) vers les DSV par l'emploi de conditions haute température (GC×GC-HT). Des choix raisonnés de conditions opératoires et un plan d'expérience ont permis l'élution des paraffines lourdes jusqu'à (nC60). En raison du nombre des coélutions, il s’est avéré indispensable d’étendre la sélectivité globale en ajoutant une dimension de séparation supplémentaire ou de détection. Ainsi le fractionnement de la matrice par chromatographie liquide (LC) hors ligne ou, en ligne, par chromatographie en phase supercritique (SFC) a permis d'obtenir une quantification étendue par nombre d'atomes de carbone et par familles chimiques. Ces développements ont conduit à la conception d'une instrumentation flexible innovante à trois dimensions : SFC-×GC×GC. Dans une troisième approche, l'ajout de détecteurs spécifiques du soufre et de l'azote à la GC×GC-HT a été étudié. L'emploi de nouvelles phases stationnaires, notamment à liquide ionique via l'étude de différentes combinaisons, a conduit à des résultats innovants pour les coupes lourdes. Dans une dernière partie, afin d'obtenir un mélange représentatif de matrices DSV, tous les résultats analytiques ont été rassemblés. Un ajustement des fractions molaires des molécules le composant a été nécessaire via une méthode de maximisation d'entropie, pour obtenir des résultats plus proches des valeurs expérimentales. In fine, outre les avancées analytiques liées à la GC×GC, ces travaux de thèse ont permis d'apporter des premiers éléments de réponses pour la compréhension de la réactivité liée à l'hydrotraitement. Les informations obtenues sont suffisamment pertinentes pour permettre d'enrichir l'étude du procédé via la compréhension des mécanismes réactionnels et la modélisation cinétique qui en découle
