After classifying Marlowe's Biblical references on four levels of definiteness, Cornelius discusses the following aspects of Marlowe's stylistic use of the Bible: quotations, paraphrases, imitations of Biblical style, individual words, sensory imagery, figures of speech, reversals, and inaccuracies. The relationships of repeated Biblical themes, such as judgment and Christ parallels, to the meaning of Marlowe's works are also explored, and the matter of Marlowe's so-called «atheism» is evaluated in the light of his Biblical references. A lengthy Appendix lists his specific Biblical references alongside their possible sources and gives textual and critical annotations for significant entries. This work also contains eight illustrations, two tables, a bibliography, and an index.

Grande, by contrast, takes Marlowe on his own terms and demonstrates how he achieves his notorious moral ambiguity through the rhetorical technique of dilation or amplification. All of Marlowe's plays end in the conventional tragic way, with death. But each play, as well as Hero and Leander, repeatedly evokes the reader's expectations of a tragic end only to defer them, dilating the moment of pleasure so that the protagonists can dally before the "law" of tragedy.

There is an elective affinity, it seems, between this pre-modern dramatist and the post-modern critics whose best work has been inspired by his plays. The reason suggested by this collection of essays is that Marlowe shares the post-modern preoccupation with the language of power - and the power of language itself. As Richard Wilson shows in his introduction, it is no accident that the founding essays of New Historicism were on Marlowe; nor that current Queer Theorists focus so much on his images of gender and homosexuality. Marlowe staged both the birth of the modern author and the origin of modern sexual desire, and it is this unique conjunction that makes his drama a key to contemporary debates about the state and the self: from pornography to gays in the military. But the fact that this play exists in two early versions, printed in 1604 and 1616, has posed formidable problems for critics. How much of either version was written by Marlowe, and which is the more authentic? Is the play orthodox or radically interrogative? Michael Keefer’s early work helped to establish the current consensus that the 1604 text was censored and revised; the Keefer edition, praised for its lucid introduction and scholarship, was the first to restore two displaced scenes to their correct place. Most competing editions presume that the 1604 text was printed from authorial manuscript, and that the 1616 text is of little substantive value. But in 2006 Keefer’s fresh analysis of the evidence showed that the 1604 quarto’s Marlovian scenes were printed from a corrupted manuscript, and that the 1616 quarto (though indeed censored and revised) preserves some readings earlier than those of the 1604 text. This edition has been updated and revised. Keefer’s critical introduction reconstructs the ideological contexts that shaped and deformed the play, and the text is accompanied by textual and explanatory notes and excerpts from sources.
