Book excerpt: This illustrated edition of The New Bath Guide by Christopher Anstey is based on the Second Issue of the First Edition which was published in 1766. It includes two major additions made by the author, the «Epilogue» and «A Charge to the Poets». It aims at widening the perspective on the eighteenth century by examining the work of a minor poet and challenges conventional assumptions about the scope of minor poetry. This series of satirical letters in verse written by the members of a provincial family staying in Georgian Bath provides an inexhaustible source of fun and has great sociological interest. Thanks to the individual and varied voices which are heard in this epistolary poem, a whole society in the making comes alive through the distorting mirror of satire. The introduction, notes and appendices throw new light on a once famous and provocative text and make extensive use of little-known material such as significant parts of the author's correspondence. They situate Anstey's work in its literary and historical contexts, by locating it at the junction of fiction and documentation, at a time of emergence, when new social codes were defined for a new society.

Somerset writers such as Parson Woodeforde, Coleridge and T.S.Eliot are introduced; so are characters from history - Judge Jeffries and the doomed Duke of Monmouth. The book is designed to be read as a narrative, and covers the whole of the old county of Somerset, dismissing the boundry changes of 1974, and including, therefore, the elegant spa town of Bath. Diary Poetics of Frances Burney, Dorothy Wordsworth and Mary Shelley sets out to determine whether each of the diaries by three female writers – namely, Frances Burney, Dorothy Wordsworth, and Mary Shelley – approximates the Philippe-Lejeunean concept of the diary as lacework or the more sweeping view, typical of the broadly conceived autobiography, which Georges Gusdorf famously likened to the mirror. The author explores Burney’s, Wordsworth’s and Shelley’s attempts at concealing the gaps between their narrating and narrated ‘I’s, as well as examining their diary lacunae, especially helpful for illustrating the gradual emergence of the diarists’ individual selves. Broader issues, connected with diary poetics, such as the use of metaphors and symbols, the degree of reliance on dialogue and ensuing narrativity, down to handling the past by means of anachronous eccentricities, are also subject to examination. The study is based on the assumption that the journal is a literary genre, which can be investigated with tools routinely used for the examination of literary texts. Yet, beyond the issues of literariness, in accordance with Philippe Lejeune’s dictum, the three journals reveal the writers’ diaristic practices. In fact, it seems that issues of the journal genre and the journal practice cannot be divorced, and neither can their lacework and mirror aspects.
