Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poets have long given us poems as portals into the stunning event and astonishing affirmation at the core of Christian faith: the Eternal Word has taken on flesh in Jesus of Nazareth. This is the mystery and message this collection of poems explores. The Latin word for “poetry” is carmen. Over time, carmen formed into our English word “charm.” These are Christmas carmen for the believer and doubter, the joyful and sorrowful, and the seeker longing for the experience of “God with us.” They are for opening the heart, widening the imagination, and shaping the soul. They are for remembering and beholding the mystery of the Incarnation in everyday life all year long.

Download or read book The Quest for Faithfulness written by Helmut Hartmann and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An individual's life story can provide insights into the character of a particular nation, the events of a specific time period, and the hopes and challenges faced by human beings as they strive to live a life that is consistent with the ideals that they espouse. This memoir of Helmut Hartmann's first seventy years of life serves such a multifaceted purpose. Hartmann was born shortly before Adolf Hitler and the National Socialists gained power in Germany. His memories of his childhood include impressions of a society in turmoil and of the persistent suffering experienced by segments of German society, particularly the Jewish community. In his adult years, Hartmann served as a pastor of the Evangelical Church in the German Democratic Republic. His account of his diverse pastoral ministry; his travels, both within and outside the Soviet Bloc countries; his engagement with the Communist political leaders; and his diligent quest for justice highlights the religious, political, economic, and social challenges faced by East German citizens while they were ruled by a political regime that was ardently anti-religious and eagerly exercised its dictatorial authority. Hartmann's memoir invites readers to consider what it means to be a follower of Christ and how their faith might inform their responses to the societal, political, and economic challenges of their particular time and place.

Download or read book The Long Fifteenth Century written by Helen Cooper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Long Fifteenth Century is intended as a companion volume to Douglas Gray's ground-breaking Oxford Book of Late Medieval Verse and Prose and incorporates a bibliography of his published writings. Gray's anthology revolutionized critical appreciation of English and Scottish literature of the `long fifteenth century' from the death of Chaucer to the Reformation, but the literature of the period as a whole remains much under-read, undervalued, and under-studied. The contributors to this volume, all leading scholars in the field, bring to the fore the power of underrated writers, restore to the period writings often attributed to other centuries, open up new possibilities in neglected genres, offer radical rereadings of some more familiar works, and demonstrate how closely the literature of the period is bound up with political and social conditions. Written in honour of Douglas Gray, to mark his long and distinguished tenure of the J.R.R. Tolkein Professorship of English Literature and Language at Oxford university, the 15 essays in this volume portray the long fifteenth century as a major period of literature in its own right. They provide a comprehensive survey of fifteenth-century literature in print, from the morality play to the ballad, verse forms to prose romances, including Chaucer, Lydgate, Skelton, and Hoccleve, along with essays on the Middle French Poets and Scottish writings of the period.
