Book Christmas at the Four Corners of the Earth

Download or read book Christmas at the Four Corners of the Earth written by Blaise Cendrars and published by American Reader (Hardcover). This book was released on 1994 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 12 trans-realist prose sketches in Christmas At The Four Corners of The Earth take the reader to Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Rotterdam, China, New Mexico, New Zealand, the Ardennes Forest, and the south Atlantic ocean. We meet a one-armed man playing the piano in a small bungalow under the Southern Cross, a Countess who survives the sinking of a transatlantic steamer and artists who drink and sing through Christmas eve and day. These sketches - working together - are antitheses to traditional and perhaps sentimental Christmas stories. These are not tales of the star, the shepherds and the manger, but of common people confronted by all the beauty, terror, doubt and confusion of the 20th century. What remains? Cendrars's profound vision and a steadfast belief that the incarnation of the spirit does, indeed, endure.

Book Mounce s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words

Download or read book Mounce s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words written by William D. Mounce and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 1544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, Vine’s Expository Dictionary has been the standard word study tool for pastors and laypeople, selling millions of copies. But sixty-plus years of scholarship have shed extensive new light on the use of biblical Greek and Hebrew, creating the need for a new, more accurate, more thorough dictionary of Bible words. William Mounce, whose Greek grammar has been used by more than 100,000 college and seminary students, is the editor of this new dictionary, which will become the layperson’s gold standard for biblical word studies. Mounce’s is ideal for the reader with limited or no knowledge of Greek or Hebrew who wants greater insight into the meanings of biblical words to enhance Bible study. It is also the perfect reference for busy pastors needing to quickly get at the heart of a word’s meaning without wading through more technical studies. What makes Mounce’s superior to Vine’s? The most accurate, in-depth definitions based on the best of modern evangelical scholarship Both Greek and Hebrew words are found under each English entry (Vine’s separates them) Employs both Strong’s and G/K numbering systems (Vine’s only uses Strong’s) Mounce’s accuracy is endorsed by leading scholars

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revelation to John by Stephen Smalley is a magisterial interpretation of John's Apocalypse as a grand drama, which can only be properly understood in light of John's Gospel and letters and in the context of the Johannine community. As such, it offers the reader a significantly different approach to this enigmatic text than that offered by most contemporary commentaries. Working directly from the Greek text, Smalley offers a masterful analysis of the critical and literary dimensions of the Apocalypse for students and scholars alike. Contents include an in-depth, critical analysis of the Greek text of Revelation a wealth of scholarly interaction with other commentaries and interpretations of Revelation a canonical assessment of Revelation in light of other Johannine texts a historical understanding of Revelation in the context of the Johannine community an interpretation of Revelation as cosmic drama Here is a fresh contribution to the scholarly study of this captivating but often perplexing book of the Bible. Smalley demonstrates that the Apocalypse speaks directly to any situation in any age and offers a portrait of God's loving justice that is relevant to our own society.

Book Maps and Travel in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period

Download or read book Maps and Travel in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period written by Ingrid Baumgärtner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume discusses the world as it was known in the Medieval and Early Modern periods, focusing on projects concerned with mapping as a conceptual and artistic practice, with visual representations of space, and with destinations of real and fictive travel. Maps were often taken as straightforward, objective configurations. However, they expose deeply subjective frameworks with social, political, and economic significance. Travel narratives, whether illustrated or not, can address similar frameworks. Whereas travelled space is often adventurous, and speaking of hardship, strange encounters and danger, city portraits tell a tale of civilized life and civic pride. The book seeks to address the multiple ways in which maps and travel literature conceive of the world, communicate a 'Weltbild', depict space, and/or define knowledge. The volume challenges academic boundaries in the study of cartography by exploring the links between mapmaking and artistic practices. The contributions discuss individual mapmakers, authors of travelogues, mapmaking as an artistic practice, the relationship between travel literature and mapmaking, illustration in travel literature, and imagination in depictions of newly explored worlds.

Book The Abyss in Revelation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward Gudeman
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2022-06-30
  • ISBN : 1646021460
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book The Abyss in Revelation written by Edward Gudeman and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that Revelation’s heavenly scenes were intended to demonstrate that God continued to exercise his control even when the audience’s experience might suggest otherwise. In The Abyss in Revelation, Edward Gudeman argues that even though the scenes of the underworld and its inhabitants are describing reality from the opposite perspective, they declare God’s sovereignty and power in an equally powerful way. Examining the motif and imagery of the abyss and the sea in Old Testament, New Testament, Greco-Roman, and Second Temple Jewish writings, Gudeman identifies traditions that John appropriates in Revelation in order to create his unique vision of the abyss. Gudeman shows that the abyss and related concepts in Revelation are variously envisioned as the abode of evil creatures, the place from which they exit, and a prison that holds them captive. In all of this, John consistently demonstrates that God is in control of the activity of Satan and demonic beings and that their destruction is both planned and certain. Original and convincing, this volume sheds light on Revelation’s message about how God responds to evil and advances our understanding of several interpretive problems related to the abyss and its inhabitants. Biblical scholars especially will benefit from Gudeman’s research.
