Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Positive Evidences of Christianity The following pages, therefore, will discuss the Christian Evidences in an order modeled upon that which is constantly followed in our legal tribunals. There the examination of the evidence presented consists of two main parts; and the inquiry is made - first, whether the testimony offered is actual testimony in the case under consideration - that is, whether it has any material bearing upon the case, and whether it is true; and, secondly, being mate rial and true, what is its weight? Accord ingly, such is the order followed here. The work is therefore divided into two Parts: The Second Part discusses - The Weight of the Ev idence in favor of the Divinity of Christianity, and presents in its proof: (a) The Superhu man Facts upon which Christianity is founded, as displayed in - l. The Advent of Christ; 2. The Character of Christ; 3. His Teachings; 4. His Prophecies; 5. His Miracles. (b) Its Superhuman Results, in the changes it has wrought in the characters and lives of men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Evidence of the New Testament: An Inductive Study in Christian Evidences This treatise is a contribution to the Christian Evidences demanded by the times. It is dedicated to the intelligent young men of the period. The work is designed to meet the skeptical issues of the day which deny the historical character of Christianity during the first three centuries, holding that the claim is not absolutely based upon the facts of Christ's life as is narrated in the four Gospels. No other work known to the writer has proposed to traverse this territory upon the lines and in the form here adopted. It embraces the period between the crucifixion of Christ and the time when Constan tine the Great established Christianity throughout the Roman Empire as the religion of the State in A. D. 325. After this date there is no question made touching the historicity of Christianity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central Evidences of Christianity It will be granted, to begin with, that these conceptions of a human life, actually realizing perfection, nay, embracing an incarnation of God, and thus affording a complete and divinely sanc tioned remedy for moral and spiritual evil, are the most remarkable, simply as conceptions, in all literature. The mere statement of them is enough to relieve us from the charge of vagueness and generality when we speak of the life, character, and work of Christ; we can therefore proceed to the argument of this tract, and show first that these are not mere conceptions, however great, but facts of a true and solid history; and then that all Christian evidence becomes, by this proof, strong with a new strength, and bright with a new light. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evidences of Christianity Evidences in the wider sense. - And so the student of Christian Evidences is justified in including within the scope of his inquiry those elementary ideas of God and religion which, though not distinctive of Christianity, are its groundwork. In taking this wider sweep he is enabled to meet the arguments of different classes of assailants. There are those who profess belief in a God while denying in whole or in part the truth of the Christian revelation. There are also Opponents with whom he seems to have less in common. Besides the Atheist, who utterly denies the existence of a God, there is the Agnostic, who grudgingly admits the possibility of a God, but asserts that if He does exist He cannot possibly be known. Book Essay on the Character of Jesus Christ

Download or read book Essay on the Character of Jesus Christ written by J. Carmichael and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essay on the Character of Jesus Christ: Considered as an Evidence of the Truth of the Christian Religion Adam in that wisdom by which he never spake as man spake; and in that elevation of mind.which suited such excellence' alone. Is it then possible to conceive that a being clothed: with virtue and excellences of every description could deceive those who are willing to give credit to his sayings? IS it' consistent with spotless purity to defile the conscience with deceit and falsehood with the most exalted devotion to God, n to establish will worship and idolatry; with benevolence to men to mislead them in their most important concerns with the greatest wisdom, to establish a groundless superstition; and can we suppose the greatest elevation of soul, compatible with the meanness of passing himself off for a being which he was'not, and claiming honours to which he had not the smallest' title Such suppositions are utterly incredible. If I we admit the truth of the records which the Apostles have given, we must admit the justice of the claims which are advanced, although we had no other evidence than the 'veracity' of Jesus himself who' urges them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences of Christianity Many able writers on the subject give the first and chief place to the historical evidences, and regard the other evidences as merely subsidiary. The historical evidences require for their full development a laborious search into the records and monuments of antiquity. Few men have the opportunity and ability to perform this labor. Book Christianity Supernatural

Download or read book Christianity Supernatural written by Henry Collin Minton and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Supernatural: A Brief Essay on Christian Evidence When the publishers did the writer the honor to request him to prepare a brief treatise on the "Evidences of Christianity," the request was accompanied with the intimation that the manuscript asked for was to be one of a number upon related topics. In this way it was made proper to assume that very much which would otherwise be embraced in the subject assigned would be treated by other and more competent hands. Accordingly, no reference has been made to that wide and attractive field of study commonly designated as "Natural Theology." Neither has the writer cared to invade the province of those who are to discuss the questions of biblical criticism which are so inextricably involved in any complete modern apologetic. The specific theme of the essay is one of the very greatest importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith and Free Thought: A Second Course of Lectures Delivered at the Request of the Christian Evidence Society All this system of doubt has, too, a character specifically its own. The present assault upon Christianity is altogether different from that of the Deists of the last century, or of the Atheists of the revolutionary aera. There is very little open assault upon the first principles of Theism. The attack is all the more dangerous because its real purpose is so far concealed, because it proceeds by sap and mine, rather than by open assault. For many a soul which would be on its guard if called upon at once to surrender its faith in a God, is led unsuspiciously 'to parley with the enemy when with fair speeches and professions of respect for that which is most, highly prized he proposes only to examine some untenable propositions which have been too long admitted without question, and to clear Faith, not to impair it, by bringing Reason to its aid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity, Its Essence and Evidence: Or, an Analysis of the New Testament Into Historical Facts, Doctrines, Opinions, and Phraseology The following work was projected and com menced more than twenty years ago. At that time, German Rationalism had just begun to agitate the minds of American theologians, and disturb the peace of our churches. The author was led to investigate the grounds of be lief in the supernatural origin and superhuman authority of the Christian religion anew. About that time, he fell in with a book of a very interesting and extraordinary character, written by the famous Jeremy Bentham, and entitled, Not Paul, but Jesus. In this work that distinguished man attempted to show that Paul had corrupted Christianity, and that the Christianity of the Church had been anything but Christian since his time. The works of Jefferson were published almost contemporane ously, and they were found to contain nearly the same sentiments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Person of Christ: His Perfect Humanity a Proof of His Divinity, With Impartial Testimonies to His Character Blessed is he who from the heart can believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and the fountain of salvation. True faith is an act of God wrought in the soul by the Holy Spirit, who reveals Christ to us in his true char acter, as Christ has revealed the Father. Faith, with its justifying, sanctifying, and saving power, is inde pendent of science and learning, and may be kindled even in the heart of a little child. It is the peculiar glory of the Redeemer and his religion to be coextensive with humanity itself, without distinction of sex, age, nation, or race. His saving grace flows and overflows to all and for all, on the simple condition of faith. This fact, however, does not supersede the necessity of thought and argument. Revelation, although above nature and above reason, is not against nature or against reason. On the contrary, nature and the super natural, as has been well said by a distinguished New England divine, constitute together the one system of God. 1 Christianity satisfies the deepest intellectual as well as moral wants of man, who is created in the image and for the glory of God. It is the revelation of truth as well as of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Records: An Historical Enquiry Concerning the Age, Authorship, and Authenticity of the New Testament To deny that the truth of Christianity, the facts upon which it is built, and the doctrines which it inculcates, are Of the utmost importance to our best interests, and require to be most carefully examined, would better suit the days of intolerance on the One hand and of blind belief on the other, than the times in which we live. For the Christian religion not only sets forth a peculiar morality little insisted upon, though not wholly unknown, among the ancient nations of the world, but propounds also a variety of Speculative or scholastic doctrines, scarcely intelligible to the people - or even to a large number of their teachers - as the princi ples upon which it professes to base its moral code and, thirdly, recites a series of historical facts, on which both the moral and doctrinal codes are founded. The points Of enquiry, then, to all who would study Christianity with minuteness, are three: 1. Its moral or practical character; 2. Its doctrines or speculative aspect; and, 3. Its historical evidence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Evidences of Christianity Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Williams McGarvey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evidences of Christianity, Vol. 1 On no other subject have so many thoughtful volumes been written within the last hundred years, as on the Evidences of Christianity. This is true as regards both sides of the question at issue; for while the uninspired friends of Christ have never before defended his cause with ability so consummate, they have never before encountered opponents with learning so extensive or with talents of so high an order But among the army of writers whom the deepening conflict has called into the field, very few have attempted to reduce the arguments pro and con to a form suitable for class-room instruction. Scarcely one of these writers has failed to widen the field of investigation, or to direct attention to some of the new phases which the controversy is ever assuming; but since the appearance, a century since, of Lardner's immortal work, no English author has attempted an exhaustive discussion of the whole subject. Of the few works in which a general though not exhaustive discussion of the subject has been presented with a view to the instruction of College classes, not one has continued in general use to the present day. As a consequence, instructors are now limited to the unsatisfactory method of teaching by lectures alone on this important theme. These considerations furnish the ground on which the author excuses himself for offering to the public the work of which this volume is the first installment.
